The next release on Tiefschwarz’s newly established imprint, NAU, is a split 12” from none other than Eric Volta & Jonny Cruz along with Maher Daniel & Gab Rhome on the flip side. 

Having released on seminal labels including Ellum Audio, Visionquest, Dirtybird and My Favourite Robot in the last few years, Eric Volta should, without doubt, be a familiar name among many. Climbing out of the demo pile, Eric Volta established himself as an artist capable of producing deep and soulful music when he made his debut on Claude Von Stroke’s Dirtybird Records. His partner in crime on this cut, Puerto Rico’s Jonny Cruz, is a multi-versatile DJ and producer who constantly explores the boundaries of his craft. A man of many aliases with a wide variety of releases he linked up with the Cocoon label and released the dancefloor smasher “Dawn’s Highway.” 

The second cut on the split single is from a truly dynamic pair of producers: Gab Rhome & Maher Daniel. Gab, the self-styled man who, with over 50 years spent in the middle of the desert, came back to civilization to conquer your heart with his soft hands, lush melodies; and Maher, the deep thinking fellow Canadian with known for crafting melting pots of sound. On “With the Rain...” the pair have sculpted a deep groover, which is laden with moody, emotive chords, before they break out a warm, funk-infused bassline. 

On their own these producers are incredible; in collaboration, they are unstoppable.

New year, new label. NAU is not only going to be a new platform for us at Souvenir to keep doing what we love best, unearthing future house classics from producers new and old, but also a global party series which had its inaugural Berlin event in December 2012.

For our first foray, we have a banger from the veteran American producer Hollis P. Monroe teamed with Canadian newcomer Overnite, and on the flip, a wonked out riddim from Erfurt native, Kenny Leaven. ‘If I’m Alive’ keeps it taut, with a stripped back feel throughout, a kick and conga duet underpinning the rhythm. Hollis and Overnite bring in more percussive elements, as well as a burbling synth, but everything plays second fiddle to Overnite’s vocal talents. Overdubbed words fly in from every angle, in a distinctly high vocal range, gets pitched down, up and all over the shop.

Next up is Rocket from Kenny Leaven, who’s provided us previously with a remix on Souvenirplus. He’s also the man behind Erfurt’s popular Bayou Open Air festival so has fingers in plenty of pies – as long as they’re electronic music related! The track proves a vivid contrast to Hollis and Overnite's straight house number, tempo’s quickened, and an alien, oscillating
bassline that throbs throughout. A snare pattern works around it, as do some alternating tones, but it’s that central bass core, beefed up later with a phasing effect, that maintains the vaguely threatening mood. Here’s to NAU001 and plenty more where that came from!

Following on from the release of David K’s well-received Sneakers & Playground EP, the unnerving pairing of Verena & Pherox (aka Tim Querengaesser) return with a record that is veiled by in a dark and mysterious shroud.

Verena is a young and fresh female artist, influenced from an early age by the classical work of her father (who worked as a music composer), whilst Pherox is a more familiar presence in today’s deep clubbing landscape, having released on Mupa, Catenaccio, Dumb Unit, Stock5 and his very own label, Slash. 

On this EP, the pair explore a broad palette of sounds, taking in Italian Horror film-esque chords, chopped and screwed vocal samples, rolling basslines, soothsaying vocals, drawn out fog horn stabs. This is deep music; flavoured by the nocturnal, tinted by the eighties, and ultimately full of originality.
