Seven years down the line and Tamed Musiq is proud to present its first-ever album release: "Upstream Colour“ by Iron Curtis. This long overdue follow-up to "Soft Wide Waist Band“ represents a milestone for the Berlin-based producer and easily ranks as his most accomplished work to date. Similar to an impressionist painter, Iron Curtis portrays a well-known subject (House Music) in a dream-like setting by employing a palette of ethereal sounds, subdued melodies and bass-heavy beats. “Upstream Colour” is a beautiful musical experience that never strays too far from the dancefloor yet requires multiple listens in order to unlock all of its mysteries.

Johannes Paluka has enjoyed a prolific career since he has started using the Iron Curtis moniker back in 2009. His releases on Mirau, Hudd Traxx, Retreat or Uncanny Valley have been highly praised and have certainly contributed to the resurgence of deep house in the last decade. His music as part of prolific duos Achterbahn d'Amour with Jürgen Albert, Moon with Johannes Albert and Smpl with Leaves has also been widely celebrated. But as Johannes was going through a difficult period in his life at the beginning of 2016, the events in turn sparked a flurry of inspiration which resulted in the core of "Upstream Colour“. The producer has then spent the last two years working on different projects while continuously fine-tuning his second album and making it his most personal creation up to now.

"Upstream Colour“ is a stunning journey in twelve parts where ambient pieces effortlessly slide into club-ready tracks, thanks to a very distinct range of sounds. There's an unmistakable dream-like quality to the music as subtle tones, elusive melodies and background noises give the impression of looking at familiar elements through a veil. "Boorang“, "Werc Werc Werc“ or “Holding Back” can definitely light up the dancefloor but they also evoke a certain distance from it and are keen to drift into an otherworldly realm, somewhat reminiscent of the cinema of David Lynch.

But even at it's most peculiar, there's an undeniable warmth that radiates from "Upstream Colour" which is best illustrated in its calmer moments such as "Ease Pt. 1 and 2“, "Bethanien“ or the closer "Mt. Gordon“ where ripples of white noise seem to wash away the 'classic' house sounds of yesterday. And then there are the cathartic pieces such as the title track or the gorgeous “Lucent”: beginning in the now familiar fog-like signature, these tracks brilliantly evolve to let in beams of emotion tingled with melancholy. “Lucent” in particular is prone to illuminate even the darkest dancefloor with its majestic strings and heartwarming synths.

“Upstream Colour” is a mesmerizing album that follows the listener long after it has reached its end, akin to a dream that lingers on well beyond the moment of waking up. It is also a testimony to Iron Curtis' boundless talent as a musician whose abilities extend far beyond the genre of House Music.

Iron Curtis -  Holding Back - Tamed Musiq

The keeping of pets marks humans’ attempt at taking possession of a part of reality that is not at his disposal. Dressing a piece of the real that lives according to entirely non-human rules and which only in the saddest case does not resist the discipline of the human symbolic order vehemently and in a sustained matter, is a violent act of protection. Because in the non-place of the real, all that which we are helpless in the face of looms: the non-logical and the nameless, the violence and the noise, yet also the unrestrained and unfiltered desire.
The innocuous figure of the pet marks a gateway to an investigation of these eerie milieus, while electronic dance music lends itself to this investigation in an outstanding way. This constellation marks the subject of Column’s ‘Pets II.’

Column is the name of Cologne based renaissance man Jan Philipp Janzen, who, as chief emissary of Cologne’s pop internationalism, has been playing the field in various functions for Von Spar, Cologne Tapes, Urlaub in Polen, Owen Pallett, Scout Niblett or The Field, and who has also, in one way or another, been involved in most relevant records coming out of Cologne for the past number of years. After his
excellent solo debut ‘Pets I’ (Areal, 2016), Janzen presents another extraordinary record in ‘Pets II,’ perfectly complemented by another ghostly oil work of Burkhard Moennich on the cover.
Sonically, ‘Pets II’ marks a clear development for Column. In its exploration of the thresholds of the real, it sets two points of focus, corresponding with the split in sides A and B. Side A, on which Janzen teams up with long-time friend myr. (PNN), explores the uncanny as a fissure of the symbolic order, and the subsequent breaking in of the real. It opens with two peaktime rockets that have their wooden, nether-regional groove narrated by grim, down-pitched vocals. The ethereal remix by Leibniz (hundert) seems to be observing the situation from a hiding place, and is the side’s clandestine and no less dark closer. Side B, for which Janzen invited studiomate Marvin Horsch (Dorfjungs/Beats in Space) along, delivers two swaying synthesizer workouts, the second of which, “Molly and Swerve,” is directed firmly at the dancefloor again. What is at stake here is the transition between a free, undirected jouissance of the real and a more ordered becoming-lust. Here, as in
Map.ache’s (Kann/Giegling/Altin Village) remix which closes out ‘Pets II,’ it becomes clear what connections dance music can foster between a free, impersonal desire and the sphere of interpersonal wanting, but also the losses that are negotiated in it.

Above all, however, it becomes evident what a courageous daring project ‘Pets II’ is in all of its conceptual and aesthetic determination; with Von Spar’s standout ‘Garzweiler’ 12” (Altin Village & Mine, 2017), it documents a New Cologne Realism.

The release follows on from their 12" on Renate Schallplatten last year, alongside a previous EP for Bordello A Parigi and remixes for PBR Streetgang’s new imprint.

The Heatwave EP features 3 floor-ready original tracks plus a remix of the title track by Johannes Albert (Frank Music, Fine).
The final cut ‘Pizzamouse' a more relaxed slice of melodic house sees the release out in style with dancing rubbery synth lines which is sure to get those feet moving.

PBR Streetgang return to their home imprint KURTZ to deliver their latest EP ‘Sendeturm’, accompanied by a remix from Paranoid London’s Johnny Aux. 

Long-standing members of the house and disco landscape with releases via the likes of Skint, Crosstown Rebels and Futureboogie amongst many, Bonar Bradberry and Tom Thorpe, aka PBR Streetgang, continue to evolve and impress as one of the most consistent and diverse duos on the scene. Holding down residencies at the likes of Pikes in Ibiza, whilst making stand-out appearances at the likes of Glastonbury, Printworks and Love International – a festival which holds a special place within this latest EP – the duo launched their vinyl-focused KURTZ imprint in 2019 in impressive style, gaining support from the likes of DJ Harvey, Bicep, Soul Clap, and the late great Andrew Weatherall. Following a brief hiatus, the duo now return to home turf with possibly the strongest release on the label to date as they unveil their ‘Senderturm’ EP, welcoming Paranoid London member and electro-favourite Johnny Aux on remix duties. 

Opening cut ‘Zoot Module’ welcomes a moody, low-slung slab of electro with haunting riffs and eerie synth lines which hold your sonic gaze front and centre, whilst title production ‘Sendeturm’, named after the lookout tower above the Love International site, takes listeners on a dreamy beat-less ride through melancholic tones and showcases an ode to a summer lost in place of beauty. 

On the flip, Johnny Aux’s interpretation of ‘Zoot Module’ welcomes his signature rough and raw dirtbox sound which buries its way under your skin to reveal a pacey, true body mover, before closing proceedings via the blissful and rich ‘Thru The Shutters’ – a production imagined as the final track in the early hours of a Sunday morning dancefloor and a hypnotic closer that shapes up proceedings in emphatic fashion.
