Fresh off their recent single on Avotre, the California duo of Yooj and Steve Huerta return in fine form, this time with their Retrofit debut. The pair’s creative partnership began back during their final year of university where they discovered a shared affinity for a sound quite divergent from the preferences of their ‘EDM’ addled peers.

“Take Your Time” opens the EP with myriad distinct influences. Thick progressing stabs, stuttering bass, and a plaintiff female voice make this a perfect peaktime track for the summer. “Love Me Right” goes for a more heads down, late night approach with a deep rhodes line, guitar licks popping in and out, and a thick, chugging groove that rarely relents.

Best known for their work on labels like 2020vision and Exploited, the Amsterdam duo Homework lend their expert ears to the title track, spreading the original’s chords out far and wide, surrounding it with several new melodic elements and a jacking Chicago groove - a combination that will find itself in many a set over the following months. To round things off, “I Said” alternates boisterous upbeat moments alongside a moody, insistent groove.

Mat Playford continues his run of form with ace new track ‘ISON’. Beginning with a gurgling, snaking 303 and slamming beats, ‘ISON’ soon develops into piano house euphoria — but not
in a cheesy way. A looped old skool piano refrain mesmerisingly carries the track for a minute or two before some amazing, mazy jazz piano tickles the sensibilities. Boogie-woogie scale-traversing freestyling, some dynamite ivory-tinkling not seen on a dance track since ‘Uncertain Smile’ by The The, it totally makes ‘ISON’. Awesome.

Meda Fury presents the debut release of Malmö’s Armand Jakobsson AKA Rimbaudian. Taking his name from the modernist poet, Jakobson’s music is a beguiling mixture of thumping house, tripped out rhythmic excursions and blissed out, lattice-like synth melodies.

Jacking basement sleaze is the order of the day with opener ‘Let Me Beat U’, coming on like a vintage Trelik cut, 'Werka 8’ lightens up proceedings with a stomping beat and carefree spiralling synths that shimmer with light, ‘Holy Flesh’ boasts a ghetto drum track and dizzying flute-synth refrain sure to work dancers into a frenzy, things cool down with the mysterious, glacial pads and tuff bass pulse of ‘Hold Up Hold On’.

From a family of musicians (his father is opera singer, mother a music teacher, sister is a cellist and opera singer), he grew up surrounded with music, but stubbornly rejected formal study, teaching himself composition and production whilst at university in Edinburgh.

"I was there for 4 years, and it probably had a bigger impact on me than Malmö - It’s such a moody city, and having been a too sensitive young guy there for such a long time definitely left its traces. I can’t say how, exactly, it affected me, but i like to think of my musical career in terms of chapters, and that was the first and probably most significant one, up until now."

EN : Bringing sunshine to the French scene for a few years now, Naux started music at an early age as a drummer in jazz groups. He's now an independent electronic music producer & DJ which signs many productions and EPs on various French and foreign labels (Russia, Spain, Italy, UK ...).
These connections allows him to collaborate with pretty names of the French scene, but also to appear in the playlists of major international DJs. Mainly House with a pronounced taste for energetic bangers & sampled music, this artist however has several strings to his bow, with recently his duo "Frr Fonk", focused on Live House : this groovy troublemaker has not finished surprising.

FR : S’il illumine la scène House française depuis plus d’une décennie, c’est en tant que batteur pour des groupes de Jazz que Naux s’est créé sa porte d’entrée dans la musique étant jeune. Il est aujourd'hui un Dj/Producteur reconnu. Un accomplissement qui accompagne bon nombre de sorties sur divers labels français et étrangers (Russie, Espagne, Angleterre, Italie...), ce qui lui permet de collaborer avec de jolis noms de la scène, de tourner à l’international, et d’être joué par de nombreuses pointures du circuit.
Inconditionnel de la House avec un goût prononcé pour la musique samplée et énergique, cet artiste a plusieurs cordes à son arc. Il vient récemment de lancer son duo « FRR FONK », un live hybride entre la Funk qu’il affectionne tant, et la house. Naux n’a pas fini de surprendre !
