Saving my native language through songs my mother wants to hear. I am a total novice at singing gospel which is what Shimá wants to hear. I never had a singing voice but I am happy when Shimá hears me sing and she sings along with my rough off key attempts at singing. The Navajo language had always been a non written language back when my ancestors spoke the ancient language. Our Diné language developed into a written format in the 1920s as missionaries sought to save the language with tribal members who desired to save our culture as well. In fact years after our written language became so important and pivotal in winning the Pacific Battles during WW2. Our Diné language has been battle tested and during the time leading up to WW2 our language had little to no outside members of the Navajo Nation that spoke our ancient language.
