Figments is an introspective journey depicted through ethereal soundscapes: personal experiences that define us yet result from intimate contemplation that little has to do with objective experience. 

In concert, mind and surroundings create a new world, where the boundaries between reality and abstraction seem feeble, non-existent. Field recordings make way for subtle ambient layers: a metaphor of the world being absorbed and reinterpreted by our consciousness. What’s left is a path made of memory, experience, feelings that become the compass that guides us through the intricacies of life. 

Like waves, perpetual melodies break through the veil of reality and force us to look within, question ourselves and what defines us. 

Figments is a celebration of the inner voice, the one that can shape reality so that we can live within its boundaries while being truly, unquestionably ourselves. 

About the artist: 

A "homegrown" of Naviar's community, Constantin Blu, aka DesuExSounds, started producing ambient and soundscapes by picking up the Naviar's Haiku challenge almost four years ago to explore and develop creativity through music as a tool for self-knowledge and interaction. Previously just a passion, Constantin has co-authored musical projects for dance and theatre in the Bucharest scene with friends who have a special home town in common: Onesti. "Figments" is the first ambient solo album that coagulates this journey, reflects the personal bond, and draws inspiration from Naviar's artistic ethos.

Naviar's first solo release of the year is the stunning concept album "Ear to the Ground" by electroacoustic duo Rathrobin.

Exploring the themes of memory and yearning, Ear to the Ground is a sonic journal of intertwined personal experiences: two nomadic authors pouring their creativity and feelings in a blank canvas that becomes a breathtaking collection of electroacoustic songs.

When Pier and Beth contacted me to release their album, I was mesmerized by the mood and poignancy of their soundscapes.
Ear to the Ground is cinematic music at its best: powerful and enveloping, inviting the listener on a journey that speaks of human nature, life, and personal evolution. Beth's voice gently guides us and hovers over Pier's captivating ambient layers, adding further depth to a multifaceted album that evolves together with the listener.

The main themes of ‘Ear to the Ground’ are time, memory and nostalgia, which are realized through textural, layered, emotive and evocative soundscapes.

During six years of collaboration, inevitably, the artists' own memories, experiences and lives were interwoven throughout the album, and their own, somewhat nomadic lifestyles reflected another significant theme of the album: the meaning of home.

Vocals, field recordings, digital and analogue instruments move through the album as a way for the artists and listeners to process experiences from the past and conjure thoughts of the future.

The album’s making was a long but consistent process and invariably included some periods of furious creativity and others of quiet contemplation.

About Rathrobin:

Beth Chesser (UK) and Pier Giorgio Storti (Italy) collaborated virtually, over a six-year period whilst simultaneously exploring the world, living in various countries. After meeting on Soundcloud they quickly began working on their first collaborative album, ‘Ear to the Ground’. Each are musicians in their own right, both have performed in live bands and a multitude of recorded musical projects. The collaboration sees Pier contribute his multi-instrumental aptitude with Beth’s vocals, and digital music compositions. All the tracks from their debut album have been recorded in various locations: Italy, UK, Singapore and Finland between 2015 and 2020.

This piece was inspired by, and recorded at, the industrial coast where I am from. The area was where the first radio broadcast across the Atlantic from England to the USA was made, so I've incorporated detuned radio from the air. The piece describes a gathering storm, breaking on the horizon of the ocean. A view I saw daily in my childhood.

I was born in 1977 in Lugano, a town on the shores of the lake of the same name in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. In the first eighteen years of my life, the environment around me changed substantially, with concrete replacing meadows and the city expanding. However, I spent a large part of my vacations in a châlet (a house built mainly of wood and stone) in the mountains, among the pines and mountains. I now believe that these places forged my soul. Each time, the return to the city was painful, as the concrete horizon took the place of the fir woods. Since the age of 18, I've lived in Lausanne, in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, by the lake and close to the mountains. Here, too, concrete and nature firmly share the territory.

The piece is a superimposition of a layer representing nature, its harmony and the joy of birdsong, and a layer representing concrete, much less varied, and more severe, played on the guitar over a few notes that sometimes erupt abruptly. This composition is a synthesis of my environment and the small country I live in. Switzerland offers majestic and varied landscapes, between lakes and mountains. It's easy to contemplate nature's beauty. But at the same time, Switzerland is also one of the most heavily concreted countries in the world in relation to its population. Concrete and nature stand side by side, but these last decades have tended to favor the first. The contrast is striking. It's this contrast that I've tried to set to music, both by a field recording taken one hundred meters from the apartment in which I live, and through a recording with my guitar in one of its rooms, in the middle of the city.

My name is Wilfried Hanrath, I am 67 years old and I am German. And we Germans have a problem with cultural legacy, after all my nation committed in the time of the Third Reich. That is why I choose my tribute to Margot Friedländer, who died only recently at the age of 103.
All her family was murdered in concentration camps, and she was the only one to surve the holocaust. She emigrated to the USA with her husband, but decided to return to Germany at the age of 88. She held speeches, went to schools to tell the children of what she has lived through -and spread her message of forgiveness wherever she could. „Let us be humans, let us be human, there is no Christian or muslim of jewish blood, but only human blood. Do not focus on what divides you, but concentrate on what unites you. Be human“. That is the attitude I wish all Germans share. We are a country with so many nationalities, many came here to work here, many flee from wars and catastrophes.
There is a large part of the German population who wants all immigrants to be expelled, plus those Germans that do not fit in. There is a large part of the German population who wants to live in peace, with their neighbors, and others in general. I sincerely wish we could learn to live in peace – with each other, and also mother nature. When I heard the news of Margot Friedländer´s death, it really shocked and deeply saddened me. I recorded a guitar improvisation with those emotions, plus the memory of her loving and forgiving being and send this as my contribution.

I'm an artist of sounds, story and socials. I explore the hidden and uncomfortable, inviting nuance in difficult conversations. My commissions have included BBC Radio 4, Contemporary Music for All, Liberty, SPILL, Supernormal and Deptford X festivals, Disability Arts Online and Queer Art Projects. 

I live in central London and my flat is surprisingly quiet. Or is it? I was curious to record the quiet corners of my living room, kitchen, drying room, bathroom and bedroom. Affixing them together, and panning these 6 to 10 minute recordings, there’s many creaks and taps, and the faint sound of a piccolo. I find the urban hum a reassuring sound - although I was raised in an English village, at age 54 I’ve now lived twice as long in cities.

El Wud is an experimental ambient project realized with the use of sound overlaps, causal collisions and cosmic echoes. 
This track draws inspiration from the rhythms and sounds of popular music from southern Italy (Neapolitan tammuriata and pizzica salentina whose repetitive rituality has always fascinated me) with electronic processing and recordings of voices and sounds from some Neapolitan markets. The Laurieddhu is a mischievous elf from the folklore of southern Italy, in Naples he is known as Munaciello. He never appears during the day. Very similar and corresponding figures to this spirit are also found in other Italian regions or in the tradition of the Irish Leprechaun.

Always fascinated by art in all its facets, Attila Varga began making theater in his late youth, in the middle of Germany, a few years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Accompanied by a philosophical approach, he has always tried to explore and interpret human nature through various forms of expression. Electronic music, with its experimental possibilities, attracted him the most.
As a wilderness educator, I spend a lot of time alone and with other people in nature and accompany them in their processes towards a greater connection with nature. Looking at our ancestors and forefathers is an essential part of my work.
Not only can insights into the lifestyles of our ancestors give us good clues as to how we - as a postmodern, alienated society at the height of technology - can succeed in (re)living a life in harmony with ourselves, our neighbors and nature, but remembering and questioning these few traditions can also prevent us from completely forgetting and thus losing valuable knowledge that has been passed down over thousands of years.
In Germany, where I come from on my mother's side and where I live, it is difficult nowadays to engage openly and with interest with the history of our ancestors - i.e. for the most part the Germanic tribes - as the debates are often politically and emotionally charged. In addition, there is virtually no actual verifiable and scientifically substantiated tradition. As a result, the time of the Germanic tribes and their heritage remains as mythical and dark as the vast forest that covered the largest area of Europe at the time and whose home it was. Like distant, inscrutable stories by the fire, which you listen to and yet hear anew every time.
As I spend a lot of time in the - still remaining - forests in my area, I wanted to tell a story that is more the story of the forest itself, the place where we come from. A story that is hidden in the various sounds and can condense into a dark atmosphere. We are all creatures of the forest and when we immerse ourselves in this place of originality, we can get an idea of how far back our history goes.

My howntown Marbach in southern Germany is above the Neckar river. In 1879 a viaduct was built as a steel construction to serve as a bridge for trains to cross the river.
In 1945, not long before WW II was over, one of the main pillars of the bridge was blown up by the "Wehrmacht", the German armed forces. They hoped to stop or slow down the proceeding of the allied armies, I think it was mainly the US army in this area. So a part of the bridge collapsed and no trains could use it any longer.
Not long after WW II the bridge was reconstructed to connect the communities again and help people get to Stuttgart and other places for work etc. The local trains could start and stop in Marbach again, the steam engine locomotives were mostly replaced by diesel enginge in the next years. Lots of people commuting daily towards Stuttgart and other near cities with large companies like Daimler, Porsche, Bosch  etc offering many well paid jobs.
Then in 1980 a new construction was put in place. The stone pillars were still used, but the old steel construction was completely exchanged with a more modern steel construction. In that year the "S-Bahn" (the regional train system around the city of Stuttgart) was connected and Marbach was the final destination of line S4. Of course modern control systems etc. were introduced as well.
Since then the construction remained the same, the "S-Bahn" trains have been modernized a few times since then.

THE PERSONAL STORIES
My father was born and raised in Stuttgart. When the bombs fell in Stuttgart their home was destroyed, and the family found a place to stay in Marbach (not sure, maybe 1943 or 1944). Then in 1945 - my father was just 14 years old - the crazy Nazi guys in their desperation and madness drafted him and other teenagers as soldiers (the "last reserve"). He and a friend were already on their way east when they decided to escape. They secretly found their way back to Marbach. They both crossed the Neckar bridge near Marbach, and my father told that they were the last ones to cross the bridge before it was blown up. Later he found a job near Stuttgart, and for most of the time while working he took the train and later the S-Bahn, crossing the Neckar many times on the rebuilt bridge.
When I started my studies near Stuttgart in 1984, I also took the train almost daily for several years. So I have also crossed that bridge for hundreds of times in both directions.
THE SOUND
I found a recording of the announcement in the S-Bahn train when arriving in Marbach after crossing the bridge. It is some years old, but the announcement may still be the same today. The speaker says:
"S4 nach Marbach. Nächste Station Marbach. Unsere Zugfahrt endet dort. Ausstieg rechts". (S4 in the direction of Marbach. Next stop Marbach. Our train ends there. Exit to the right)
So this is what I heard for many years. It reminds me of being a young man/student, it reminds me of my father. And for me it is a symbol and a reminder for all the stories and a piece of my heritage.
I used that announcement as sound source for most of the sounds you hear in my track. Granular synthesis, reverb and other effects as well as Paul Stretch (a software that stretches the original sound to a much greater length) were used.
The track starts rather harsh, as a reminder of the terrible times around WW II also in my home town. The reverb/drums echo the old steam engines that passed the bridge. It gets much smoother towards the end, and the original announcement will be heard a few times at the very end. That's because out of this wicked past a peaceful, democratic and modern world has emerged (at least in middle Europe), which hopefully will last through the troubled times we are in right now.

I was born in a small town in the province of Cuneo, Busca, about 10,000 inhabitants, in 1961.
Both my parents were violinists and, therefore, music was, since my early years of life, an ever-present element.
The sound of the violin, the church's pipe organ, Bach, Handel and other authors immediately represented the vital element in which I moved.
What is quite paradoxical, in that same small town there were also other musicians (violinists) who also had a certain national fame.
In my early years of life I was always fascinated by keyboard instruments, especially the pipe organ.

Even then I was very sensitive to the spatial dimension, to the propagation of sound. "Opening" the spaces, "forcing" the acoustics, getting out of any narrow and claustrophobic dimension (spatial, mental)
In fact I spent the 80s playing many pipe organs, in various churches in the area. Area in which there are various important organ builders; Serazzi, Vittino for example.
Unfortunately, even these musical instruments are virtually abandoned and forgotten due to lack of personnel, budget problems, etc. When a certain type of modernity advances everywhere, the barbarian hordes erase culture and knowledge everywhere.

Unfortunately the local conservatory had only one organ class (12 places), all occupied.
It was therefore a question of starting in the near future not well defined or fall back on another instrument, a compromise choice in any case.
Naturally the choice fell necessarily on the piano.

In those distant 60s there still existed, in the small cities, artisans/luthiers who had their workshop in the historic center, and it is there that I bought my upright study piano, the French Erard.
At that time there was often a discussion about the quality of the various non-German pianos, the latter being considered the best for sound and mechanics.
And every time they asked me what piano I played, I answered: "I have an upright piano, but it's an Erard", almost apologizing for my somewhat crude choice.
Then I discovered that the Erard was Chopin's piano, Liszt's, and had brought great innovations to the technology of the instrument.

Unfortunately, my relationship with the piano has always been quite conflictual. A compromise choice from the start, abandoned in the 80s when I went to the SMET in Turin to study electronic music with Enore Zaffiri.
The Erard is still in the same room, now almost abandoned for years, completely out of tune (but with the mechanics working), a reminder of other times and ambitions that have remained such
The piece I present, very minimal, subdued, almost whispered, is made up of various piano lines. Different scores, different timbres, different spatializations, something that suddenly lights up and then almost definitively disappears. A moment, a breath, a sigh, almost of shame or guilt.

A sort of "memento" for everything I have sometimes superficially judged, done, abandoned.

Torsten Goerke is an independent researcher and artist based in Dresden, Germany. Fascinated by MOD trackers at the age of 10 he started making computer-based music and later learned to play the guitar. His music now combines live coding, tinkering with electronics, lunetta-style CMOS-based noise machines and circuit bending experiments with modular sound synthesis and electro-acoustic sounds.
When I think about my cultural roots the first thought is about the heritage of Protestantism in my home country. Max Weber identified this heritage as a companion for the success of capitalism in Europe. For a long time, the daily toil of work was at the centre of life - the hardships imposed by work and the perceived duty to work, to pursue a profession and to generate an income to feed the family. This is beautifully expressed in a song from the Ore Mountains. The Erzgebirge is a part of Saxony and I have therefore chosen the recording by Anton Günther. ‘S ist Feierobndʼ, recording from 1929, vocals and guitar, in Erzgebirge dialect. As a contrast, I have placed another memory that deals with the legacy of electronic music in the GDR. The visuals are a time lapse recording of the chapter on the KCClub of the GDR recorded from the book ‘Von Robotron bisFeierobnd KC Club1 Polyplayʼ by Rene Meyer published by Das Neue Berlin, Computer und Videospiel in der DDR. The music reflects this time of my childhood. It was only as an adult that I discovered the existence of an electronic music scene in the GDR and now I tried to recreate the aesthetics of the record ‘Reinhard Lakomy Der Traum von Asgardʼ, which was recorded by Lakomy at that time with a synthesiser from the TU Ilmenau.

The Ambient/Electronic transmission channel of guitarist and producer Roland Reinke, "encym" explores un-guitaristic territory by layering, collaging and shaping improvised loops. 
This piece draws inspiration from two contrasting environments. The first is the my recent concerts in Japan, which prompted me to revisit a Logic project containing ambient set rehearsals prepared for this year’s performances. Among various sonic experiments—many of them focused on noise and pedal-based textures—I rediscovered a sparse, unembellished guitar composition. It reflects my own musical roots and cultural legacy: guitar playing in its most elemental form.
To ground the piece in a specific place and time, I layered it with a slowed-down field recording captured on the Osaka subway, creating a deep, immersive atmosphere. The result is a meditation on space and memory—anchored both in the familiarity of home and the surreal experience of being elsewhere.

Corine Timmer is a visual artist, writer, poet, micro-publisher, and nature lover. She is the creator and publisher of the Chinese zodiac haiku anthologies. Corine is a member of the British, American, and Dutch haiku societies as well as various online children’s literature groups. She sometimes participates in the Naviar Haiku Music Challenge. Corine lives in rural Portugal between the sea and the Algarvian hills.

I am a Dutch national, born in Ethiopia, and currently living in Portugal. Due to my father’s job, we emigrated often. I have lived in seven countries. All those places became a part of me but not one gained exclusive control. To incorporate so many cultures and impressions in a single musical composition would be complex, time consuming, and lengthy. For that reason I chose to explore the music of my birth place, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Sound Ripples is a sound installation by Marco Sebastiano Alessi, created for the Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio. Inspired by the cultural legacy of the Ainu people, Alessi and members of the online music community Naviar Records reflected on the roots of their own local traditions, and created sounds inspired by the landscapes and stories of their respective environments.
Combining field recordings from across Japan, ambient compositions by Naviar Records’ community, and sounds captured during Alessi’s time in Sapporo, this installation invites listeners to experience sound as a vessel of memory, transmission, and transformation.
This immersive experience aims to highlight the importance of music as a connector that brings cultures into dialogue: a medium that transcends space and time to build bridges between distant communities.

oshio Kiyosaki (1922-1999) was a Japanese haiku poet and scholar of Japanese literature. He published a biography of Kyoshi Takahama in 1966 and co-authored Kyoshi Monogatari, another study on the renowned haiku poet, in 1979.

The Milky Way (amanogawa, or "Heavenly River" in Japanese) is a kigo for Autumn, mainly because that's when the galaxy is most visible in Japan.

Toshio Kiyosaki (1922-1999) was a Japanese haiku poet and scholar of Japanese literature. He published a biography of Kyoshi Takahama in 1966 and co-authored Kyoshi Monogatari, another study on the renowned haiku poet, in 1979.

The Milky Way (amanogawa, or "Heavenly River" in Japanese) is a kigo for Autumn, mainly because that's when the galaxy is most visible in Japan.

Wet Petals is a collection of 5 ambient compositions by Hirotaka Shirotsubaki, a sound artist from Kobe, Japan.

Soothing melodies, field recordings and otherworldly guitar atmospheres will take you to an ethereal and eternal landscape where time stopped long ago, but nature still resonates with intensity. Wet Petals is a recreation of memories from fragments of sounds: it draws inspiration from nature and moods, bringing back impressions from days gone by.

"'Haiku' is a collection of musical interpretations of haiku poems, all recorded during 2020, as part of Naviar Haiku challenges. My aspiration when selecting tracks is to communicate a series of experiences, and hopefully take you on a short journey. Most pieces are played, mixed and recorded live with an eclectic arsenal of hardware keyboards, synthesisers, and analogue effects, with little or no further editing."

Mats Unden is a Swedish sound artist, musician, and experimental composer, based in Darwin, Australia. He creates minimal electronica, ambient, and makes noise, with a passion for analogue, modular and vintage synthesizers. Being a visual artist as well, some works end up in performances, videos and installations.
