WE BACK BABY! And just in time for festival season 2021. Of all the genres out there, Drum and Bass has gotten me through the pandemic and has been my favorite genre for as long as I can remember. From old school Pendulum and The Prodigy, to my new found love for Sub Focus, Wilkinson, Dimension and friends, this genre continues to be severely underappreciated and needs more love here in the US. Hope you guys enjoy this short mix I put together. Also this is my first mix that was done on my XDJ-RX2, so hopefully they continue to get better from here!

> Does technology erode our humanity, or does it beckon us to become something greater?< 

This EP initially began during the pandemic with the first minute and a half of what would become the track “Are You Ready?” I fell in love with this track at the time, and felt like I wanted to give it a proper launch into the world as part of a larger project, the only question was, what project?

It was around this time that I had started to become even more invested in the world of Cyberpunk culture, with books like Neuromancer and games like Cyberpunk 2077. I had also rediscovered an old Hardcore History episode about the dawn of the nuclear age, that questioned if humans were really ready to deal with the consequences of developing that technology.

This started me down the path of thinking about technology and humanity, and how the two relate to each other. Do we sometimes get ahead of ourselves with the technology we develop? Is it possible that we as a species aren’t ready for some of the things we create like nuclear bombs or neural implants? Perhaps we need these big leaps in technologies to force us to evolve, to grow, to become greater as a human race? 

I wanted to try and explore this idea, and since it was about time for a new EP, I thought music might be a good medium.

Starting with the track “Uplink,” I wanted to mimic the transition into a completely digital world. A world where we’ve erased all traces of humanity and fully embraced the digital world. “Netrunner” explores this world of hyper connectivity, efficiency, and the digitization of the soul. 

“Inversion” and “Inertia” seek to transition away from this wholly digital world, and to gradually reincorporate some semblance of humanity, all leading up to the track that kicked off the EP, “Are You Ready?”

I realized one of the reasons I always liked “Are You Ready?” was because it sought to blend purely digital Acid sounds with organic instruments into some sort of cohesive harmony. A harmony that is hopefully creating something better than each element them could do on their own. 

What does this mean for my original mission statement? Does technology erode our humanity or beckon us to become better? I’m actually not sure. I hope the EP makes you think about that relationship, that link, and that connection between what we create and who we are, and who we are for each other.

All that, or I hope it gives you something fun to listen to once or twice.

Producer, turned unprofessional biography writer, Terminal Voltage, is a Canadian music producer with a habit of crafting awkward run-on sentences. Influenced by everything from Classical to Hip Hop to Drum 'n' Bass, his music has slowly emerged to be an unasked-for blend of virtual piano, quantized verses and neat electronic sounds. 

Since choosing his moniker during a grade 11 physics lecture, Terminal Voltage has released six EP's and a number of singles spanning a variety of genres from deep house to drum 'n' bass to complextro (lol remember that genre). As if trying to publicly advertise his introversion, Terminal Voltage insists on completing all lyric writing, production, mixing, mastering and artwork himself (which surely isn't related to his ego).

He now lives quietly with his computer and two monitors in the quaint downtown core of one of Canada's largest cities.
