Osaka-based Archipelago Soundsystem present their second EP on Kyoto's NC4K as part of the label's newly-launched YELLOW series, which focuses on harder club sounds falling outside of the label's traditional core genre of house. For "harder" in this particular case, read "speed garage".

The 4 tracks on offer take in the whole width and breadth of the genre, from a more classic Loop da Loop-inspired style on "No fear riddim" to the Niche/Big Ang-inspired "Txirimiri jaz tek". "Universal basic income now" is a rare glimpse of the lesser-spotted Birmingham variety, proudly wearing its hard house influence and Sweet Pussy Pauline sample (and equality politics) on its sleeve. "Shoe throwin riddim" is a trip back in time to turn of the millennium optimism and lazy summers spent playing Jet Set Radio and Ape Escape, riffing on the soundtracks of both in a speed garage style.

- No fear riddim: Certainly the darkest and most traditional speed garage track of the lot, with a strong gangsta rap vibe with the gunshots, Danny Elfman pizzicato strings, ominous bassline and time-stretched vocals. Quite tough-sounding this one but the judiciously placed Amen breaks throughout will pop crowds to punch things up a notch energy-wise.

- Universal basic income now: Big, big summer/weekend/both vibes happening on this one. There's a lot of influences going on musically, with the Birmingham hard house low end and a more New York garage or Love 2 Infinity feel going on up top. Then there's the classic Sweet Pussy Pauline monologue cut up and rearranged to make the case for universal basic income - or at least not going back to work once the weekend's over!

- Shoe throwin riddim: A thought experiment along the lines of "what if Soichi Terada (godfather of Japanese house, did the Ape Escape soundtracks too) had made garage instead of house?". Combine that with the Jet Set Radio source samples and it's like discovering a lost Playstation 2 or Dreamcast corker, then it suddenly goes full-on speed-fuelled ragga. 2 for the price of 1, this one.

- Txirimiri jaz tek: Txirimiri (cheery meery) is the Basque/Spanish word for Scotch mist incidentally, playing off the flip. TRACK. IS. LUSH. and the hardware really shines at the start and then stick around for the absolute piledriver of a Reese bassline once it kicks in. A must-listen, a little piece of 136 bpm heaven fallen to earth. No summer DJ set should be without this one.

Celebrating its fifth anniversary in November 2022, NC4K launches the 'Green' series with a focus on deep house. The first release, catalog number NC4KG001, is the 'Toni' EP from Tokyo-based producer Genichiro (Ex-blackglassG).
Based on Deep House and Dub House style, the EP is unique and sick in its sound design and sophisticated hi-hat grooves. The remixer is Tokyo-based Torei, who hosts the label "Set Fire To Me".
