In 2021, Canadian Scholars Press published the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health’s university-led textbook entitled Introduction to Determinants of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples’ Health in Canada. This critical volume offers an overview of the determinants of health for Indigenous peoples in Canada, while cultivating an understanding of how the presence of coloniality in health care determines First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people’s health and well-being. Comprising wisdoms from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis leaders, knowledge holders, artists, activists, clinicians, health researchers, students, and youth, this Indigenous-led book offers practical insights and applied knowledge about combating coloniality and transforming healthcare systems in Canada.

The NCCIH's Dr. Julie Sutherland. one of the books editors, is joined by Ryan O’Toole. Ryan co-authored, with Onyx Sloan Morgan and Laura McNabb Coombs, a chapter entitled “Our Highway, Our Tears.” The chapter traces how resource extraction has created unique health disparities among Indigenous women, and Two Spirit people. The authors honour the creativity and strength of Indigenous communities that engage in myriad ways to combat gender-based violence through systemic transformation.


En 2021, la maison d’édition Canadian Scholars Press a publié le manuel préparé par des universitaires pour le CCNSA, intitulé Introduction to Determinants of First Nations Inuit and Metis People’s Health in Canada, soit Introduction aux déterminants de la santé des populations autochtones au Canada. Cet ouvrage essentiel livre un survol des déterminants de la santé chez les populations autochtones du Canada et permet de bien comprendre l’influence du colonialisme et des soins de santé sur la santé et le mieux-être des populations des Premières Nations, des Inuits et des Métis. Intégrant la sagesse de dirigeants, de gardiens du savoir traditionnel, d’artistes, d’activistes, de cliniciens, de chercheurs du secteur de la santé, d’étudiants et de jeunes issus des Premières Nations ou des populations inuites ou métisses, cet ouvrage dont la rédaction a été dirigée par des Autochtones offre de l’information concrète et des connaissances pratiques liées à la lutte contre le colonialisme et à la transformation des systèmes de santé au Canada. Je suis la Dre Julie Sutherland, et je suis une des éditrices de ce livre. Aujourd’hui, je suis en compagnie de Ryan O’Toole. Ryan est coauteure, avec Onyx Sloan Morgan et Laura McNabb Coombs, d’un chapitre du livre intitulé Our Highway, Our Tears – notre route et nos larmes.

Ce chapitre explique comment l’extraction des ressources a contribué à créer des disparités particulières en matière de santé des femmes autochtones et des personnes bispirituelles. Les auteurs rendent hommage à la créativité et à la force des communautés autochtones qui contribuent de multiples façons à la lutte contre la violence fondée sur le genre grâce à la transformation systémique. Voices from the Field - Episode 13 - Inuit risk and response to COVID-19

In this episode, Aluki Kotierk, the President of Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI), speaks to the ongoing inequities that put Inuit at greater risk during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also speaks to the challenges that some Inuit communities and households face when trying to follow public health guidelines around physical distancing and hand hygiene. We also learn how Inuit organizations and communities, in addition to Nunavut’s Chief Public Health Officer, have responded to the pandemic and ensured that Nunavut has remained COVID-19 free.

The National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH) is one of six National Collaborating Centres across the country, each focusing on a different area of public health, that were established in 2005 by the Government of Canada and funded through the Public Health Agency of Canada. 

The NCCIH supports a renewed public health system in Canada that is inclusive and respectful of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Through a holistic, co-ordinated and strengths-based approach to health, the NCCIH fosters links between evidence, knowledge, practice and policy while advancing self-determination and Indigenous knowledge in support of optimal health and well-being.
