Past, Present, and Future: The Story of a Northern Ontario First Nations Health Data Partnership   

In 2016, several First Nations health service organizations in northern Ontario came together to address a shared challenge: a lack of high-quality, community-specific health data that they needed to make evidence-informed decisions. This led to the formation of Mamow Ahyamowen (Everyone’s Voices), an epidemiology partnership of 11 First Nations organizations collectively serving 78 communities across the region. Building on the foundational work of the Chiefs of Ontario and ICES, Mamow Ahyamowen used health administrative data to better understand the mortality experiences of its communities in 2019. Since then, the Partnership has prioritized meaningful knowledge translation and capacity-strengthening activities to share findings in ways that support Partners and communities. 

This webinar will tell the story of Mamow Ahyamowen through lenses of self-determination and Indigenous Data Sovereignty. Participants will hear from presenters who hold various roles in the Partnership, including Loretta Loon (Steering Committee Member for the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority), Dr. Jennifer Walker (Epidemiologist, Health Services Researcher & Advisor), and Maureen Gustafson (Knowledge Translation Specialist). Together they will provide an overview of the Partnership’s history, work to date, and path forward.

Passé, présent et avenir : histoire d’un partenariat en matière de données sur la santé des Premières Nations du Nord de l’Ontario

En 2016, plusieurs organisations de services de santé des Premières Nations se sont réunies pour résoudre une difficulté commune : l’insuffisance de données de grande qualité sur la santé, propres à chaque communauté, nécessaires à la prise de décisions fondées sur des données probantes. Cela a abouti à la formation de Mamow Ahyamowen (« les voix de tous »), un partenariat d’épidémiologie regroupant onze organisations des Premières Nations servant collectivement 78 communautés de la région. En s’appuyant sur le travail fondamental des Chefs de l’Ontario et de l’ICES, Mamow Ahyamowen a utilisé les données administratives sur la santé afin de mieux comprendre l’expérience du décès vécue dans ses communautés en 2019. Depuis, ce partenariat a donné la priorité à l’application utile des connaissances et aux activités de renforcement des moyens permettant de communiquer les constatations d’une façon qui aide les partenaires et les communautés.

Ce webinaire raconte l’histoire de Mamow Ahyamowen à travers le prisme de l’autodétermination et de la souveraineté des données autochtones. Les participants entendront des conférencières qui occupent diverses fonctions dans le partenariat, dont Loretta Loon (membre du comité directeur de l’Autorité sanitaire de la région de Weeneebayko), Jennifer Walker (épidémiologiste, chercheuse et conseillère en services de santé) et Maureen Gustafson (spécialiste en application des connaissances). Ensemble, elles présenteront dans les grandes lignes l’histoire du partenariat, des travaux menés jusqu’à présent et de la voie vers l’avenir.

Voices from the Field - Episode 13 - Inuit risk and response to COVID-19

In this episode, Aluki Kotierk, the President of Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI), speaks to the ongoing inequities that put Inuit at greater risk during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also speaks to the challenges that some Inuit communities and households face when trying to follow public health guidelines around physical distancing and hand hygiene. We also learn how Inuit organizations and communities, in addition to Nunavut’s Chief Public Health Officer, have responded to the pandemic and ensured that Nunavut has remained COVID-19 free.

The National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH) is one of six National Collaborating Centres across the country, each focusing on a different area of public health, that were established in 2005 by the Government of Canada and funded through the Public Health Agency of Canada. 

The NCCIH supports a renewed public health system in Canada that is inclusive and respectful of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Through a holistic, co-ordinated and strengths-based approach to health, the NCCIH fosters links between evidence, knowledge, practice and policy while advancing self-determination and Indigenous knowledge in support of optimal health and well-being.
