There’s a huge match-up in high school football on Friday night when The Newburyport Clippers meet the North Reading Hornets. Mayor Reardon, along with Drew Moholland, will be the commentators on Joppa Radio WJOP 96.3.  The kick-off is at 6:30 p.m. at James T. Stehlin Field. Recycling and Energy Director, Molly Ettenborough, hosted National Grid at the Newburyport Senior Community Center yesterday, regarding the November 1st electricity increase. Tonight, a new School Committee member will be chosen during a special joint meeting between the School Committee and the City Council. Peabody Essex Museum's New 
Salem Witch Trials Walk

            Dinah Cardin, content producer of the new Salem Witch Trials Walk at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) will visit the show this week. 

            I experienced the walk last week, and found it fascinating and sadly, strangely relevant to today. And FYI, the streets of Salem are navigable again now that Halloween is past!

          I'll talk with Dinah about the self-guided audio walking tour, available on any Wi-Fi enabled device, during which PEM curators share a behind-the-scenes perspective on some of the most compelling stories related to the infamous events of 1692.

          The tour begins inside the museum, and includes original court documents from the trials, including a petition pleading for her life of one of the accused.

A large oil painting depicts “The Trial of George Jacobs, Sr. for Witchcraft,” exhibited next to a showcase with one of Jacobs’ actual walking sticks, which he was accused of using to assault people “while in spectral form.”
          
           In the “Salem Stories” gallery, the tour includes some of the commercialized “witch kitsch” sold over the years, such as "witch spoons," "witch cream, and the “Salem Witch Fortune Teller.”

          The tour concludes outside, with stops at the Charter Street Cemetery, the Salem Witch Trials Memorial, the Ropes Mansion – better known today as the “Hocus Pocus” house, and a final stop at the "Bewitched" statue.

The new Artistic Director of Cantemus Chamber Chorus, Jason Iannuzzi, visit the virtual studio to speak more his background in music as well as to promote the upcoming holiday concert “Old World, New Worlds" which will be performed at the Belleville Congregational Church. 

Learning more about Jason, Mary learns he has earned a Bachelor of Music from Westminster Choir College and a Master of Music in Conducting from Carnegie-Mellon University, where his mentor was the esteemed conductor Robert Page. Jason discusses Page's influence on his approach to conducting. He'll also talk about how his long-time experience directing choral music at Lexington High School underscored for him the importance of cultivating love, trust, and mutual respect not just between conductor and chorus, but amongst all the singers, as well.           

On Saturday, December 3rd at 7:30 p.m., you can attend the “Old World, New Worlds" holiday concert by the Cantemus Chamber Chorus. Mary and Jason  about the enduring appeal of the concert’s centerpiece, Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols.” Singaporean harpist Li Shan Tan will accompany the chorus.

Hear how the concert acts as a “bridge” between the chorus’s past under long-time director Jane Ring Frank and its future under his baton, and between established and beloved canonical choral works and diverse new “sonic worlds” the chorus will explore, such as a gospel version of an African American spiritual and a musical setting of E. E. Cumming’s Christmas poem, “Little Tree.”

In this episode, Mary Jacobsen talks with Tracy Dawson, an award-winning actress and TV writer,  about her book, “Let Me Be Frank: A Book About Women Who Dressed Like Men to Do Shit They Weren’t Supposed to Do,” which came out in May 2022 from HarperCollins.

Tracy describes the fascinating stories told in her book -- ranging from ancient Egypt through Joan of Arc to modern times -- of women who transgressed gendered dress codes in order to express their talents and acquire independent livelihoods.

Tracy also discusses how her own experience of gender discrimination -- she was told in an interview for a comedy writing job that the producers didn’t have any “female needs” -- launched her research into ways that women throughout history have found creative and bold ways to defy customs and laws in order to escape constraints on their talents and freedom.

Among the most astonishing stories Tracy narrates is that of Ellen Craft, an enslaved woman whose fair skin -- the result of her mother being raped by her enslaver -- enabled her to pass for white. She and her husband devised a daring and risky plan in 1848. Cutting her hair and wearing men’s clothing, Craft disguised herself as a white plantation owner while her husband assumed the role of her enslaved valet. They traveled by train and ship from slavery in Georgia to freedom in Philadelphia.
In addition to critical praise for her book, Tracy reports finding enormous gratification in frequently hearing from mothers that they plan to give copies of “Let Me Be Frank” to their daughters.

Local Author M.G. Barlow Visits “Morning Show”
 
         On this week's show, Mary Jacobsen interviews local author M. G. Barlow about memoir, “Home, My Story of House and Personal Restoration.” Barlow discusses her relationship with two houses that provide the canvas for her memoir. Both homes came to embody the losses, challenges and possibilities of her life’s journey.
Barlow describes her childhood home serving as a “guardian with heart and soul.” However, her mother’s tragic death due to suicide and numerous subsequent family divisions led her to “bury” her affection for that home.
Much later in life, Barlow describes finding a “vintage house” in a historic mill community which she “falls in love with” despite its “cracked cement, broken stoop, and the chipmunks whizzing in and out from under a door.”
 As Barlow researches her home’s history and repairs its broken parts, she experiences a gradual emotional healing launched by the restoration, one that brings her once again, at long last, to a place that feels like “home.”

          Link House, Inc. has been providing addiction recovery and mental health services to the community for more than 50 years. CATCH represents the non-profit organization’s effort to address the current nationwide mental health crisis impacting children and their families, with youths reporting alarming upticks in rates of depression and anxiety over the last few years.   
          Gayler-Romero and Brooks also explain CATCH’s collaborative approach to partnering with community organizations, the range of services available -- including individual and group therapy, wellness education, and treatment for substance-use disorders, among others – as well as how to access services.

Rise From The Pitts - Episode 11

Mary Jacobsen talks with John Sheff, a NASA Solar System Ambassador, about astrobiology, the interdisciplinary scientific search for extraterrestrial life, which seeks to understand how life arose and evolved on Earth and what makes a planet habitable.
          Sheff is an amateur astronomer and “space buff” who operates the observatory telescope during public nights at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge.
The quest for extraterrestrial life has been advanced by two recent discoveries. First, life forms have been found in extremely harsh environments on Earth, such as hydrothermal vents in the ocean floor.

          Imagining extraterrestrial life forms has in the past been the province of science fiction writers, but these two discoveries have supplied astrobiologists with a scientific basis for speculating about how conditions on other planets would determine the physiological possibilities of a reality-based “E.T.”

Morning Show 2023-01-12 John Sheff NASA Solar System Ambassador

Once again, the talented singer-songwriter, Chad Verbeck of RockSpring joins our host, Drew Moholland on another episode of Afternoon Drive. Catching up after a bit time away recording in the studio, Chad talks about the how emotional composing an album can be. For instance, while recording his song "Old Port City", which is a musical ode to his town Portsmouth, NH, Chad mentions how he wrote the original tune and how he collaborated with his band to compose it. 

Hear a few other tunes by Chad such as "Seafarin' Stranger", "Hold On" as well as a new tune he came up with on the show titled "Walking Beside You".

Afternoon Drive 2023-01-17 MUSIC Chad Verbeck of RockSpring

West Newbury resident Jesse Kalfel will visit the show this week to discuss the documentary, “Dancing On a Volcano,” which tells the fascinating story of his mother’s work with the French resistance during World War II and her eventual escape from Nazi-occupied Europe.

Sponsored by the Newburyport Human Rights Commission and Congregation Ahavas Achim in recognition of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the film will be shown on January 26th at 6:30 PM at Nock Middle School on Low Street.

At the beginning of World War II, Kalfel’s mother, Nadja Hammerman, worked in Paris as a fashion illustrator. Other family members had faced imprisonment in Austria, and more than 50 of her relatives were sent to death camps.

A “woman of action and a survivor,” as Kalfel describes her, Hammerman helped family members escape to Trinidad with the help of a Chilean diplomat based in Paris, Armando Merino, with whom she became romantically involved.

Together, Hammerman and Merino were able to help many endangered people to acquire identity papers and visas so they could flee to Chile. Eventually, it became too dangerous for Hammerman to remain in Paris, and she fled France for New York, where she was able to resume her career and became a renowned fashion illustrator. She died in 2017 at the age of 105.

As Kalfel says, the film “speaks to the finest of human qualities in the darkest of times.” There will be a Q&A session with Kalfel at the end of the screening.

           Mary Jacobsen talks with Rev. Rebecca Bryan of First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist Church, Father Jarred Mercer of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and Rev. Christopher Ney of Central Congregational Church to get an update on the Afghan families that resettled in Newburyport last year.

          The three ministers will discuss what has gone well for the families, what’s been challenging, how the families are coping with their many transitions, how the community has engaged in providing support, and what kind of current support would be helpful to receive from the community.

In this episode of the Mayor’s Corner, Mayor Sean Reardon starts with an introduction to Black History Month in Newburyport.  To kick it off, we are hosting the installation of the first Newburyport Black History Initiative historic interpretive sign on the Rail Trail. Mayor Reardon is excited to welcome constituents, city employees and other elected officials to this celebratory event.  This project was directed by and managed by Geordie Vining, Senior Project Manager in the City’s Planning Office, Dr. Kabria Baumgartner and Cyd Raschke, and it received Community Preservation Act funding. He updates us on his very first State of the City Address and the Public and Community Service Awards, which went to extremely deserving honorees.

The Parks Re-org Plan has been officially re-submitted. The Cutter West End Fire Station project was approved at Monday’s City Council meeting. There will be a MRBA Meeting regarding the Plum Island Dredge Project on Friday, 2/3 @ 9:00 a.m. at PITA Hall. 

The search for the DPS Director and Fire Chief are moving forward. On Wednesday, January 11th, the City hosted a public forum to discuss and gain input on Newburyport’s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy. 

The Huddle and PEG Center for Art & Activism vowed to honor and never forget the families of the children at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde TX.  All month they will be creating Heart to Heart, a community art project for children, families and adults.
