Independent scholar and research of the indigenous history of Essex County, Mary Ellen Lepionka, joins the Morning Show. Lepionka is a retired college instructor and author currently working on a book about the indigenous history of Essex County. She has a Master’s degree in anthropology from Boston University and conducted Ph.D. work at the University of British Columbia. She also taught cultural and physical anthropology at Boston University and other post-secondary institutions.

In today's show, they focus their discussion on the Pawtucket people who lived in Agawam – now known as Ipswich – with a focus on their relations with the Massachusetts Bay Colonists.

Lepionka explains the Pawtucket’s usage of the land, their leadership by their "Sagamore," Masconomet; and when and how the properties currently held by the Trustees of Reservations at Crane Beach, Castle Hill on the Crane Estate, and Choate (or Hog) Island were acquired from the Pawtucket by John Winthrop, Jr., the son of the first governor of the Colony. She also talks about where the Pawtucket resided after that acquisition, and where they are today.

Lifting Your Spirit - Episode 1 featuring Rev. Rebecca Bryan

On this week's episode, Mary Jacobsen talks with James Kimmel, Jr. about the psychology of grievance and revenge. Kimmel is lecturer in psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine and co-director of the Yale Collaborative for Motive Control Studies.
Kimmel talks about the role of grievances and retaliation in violent crime, including studies that reveal that “your brain on grievance looks a lot like your brain on drugs.” Harboring a grievance – a perceived wrong or injustice, either real or imagined, says Kimmel – “activates the same neural reward circuitry as narcotics.”
Just as people become addicted to drugs or gambling, people may become addicted to seeking retribution on perceived enemies, or as Kimmel calls it, “revenge addiction.” Kimmel also talks about how cultivation of grievances has become a contagious and dangerous political tool, notably in the wake of the Big Lie and the Jan. 6th insurrection.
“Revenge-seeking” also contributes to domestic violence, youth violence and bullying, police brutality, and terrorism.
According to Kimmel, it’s critical to “increase public education, from school age through adulthood, about healthy ways to process feelings of hurt and humiliation.”
Kimmel will explain “motive control” treatment strategies being piloted successfully at the Yale Collaborative as a means of disrupting grievance addiction and disarming the craving for retaliation.

I am regularly inspired by the insights and reminiscences of creative people who have been
generous enough to share their experiences. To open my acting classes, I read passages from
memoirs, biographies and interviews of people who are known to the public for many different
reasons, and then I relate those to our experiences as actors. Acting requires us to be fully
present and it challenges us to be guided more by our emotions, intuition, and receptivity than
by our mentality. What we have discovered over the years is that much of the inspiration that
results from this ritual is applicable to many aspects of our lives beyond the craft of acting. It is
with that awareness that I wish to share these musing on a wider platform.

Mary Jacobsen speaks with historian Stephen Puleo, author of “Dark Tide: The Great Molasses Flood of 1919." Puleo talks about the causes and consequences of what has been described as “America’s most fascinating and surreal disaster,” when a tank containing 2.3 million gallons of molasses collapsed on Boston’s waterfront, releasing a 15 foot high wave of molasses, traveling at top speed at 35 mph, through the North End.

Puleo describes the extent if the damage and the toll on human life, as well as a multi-year court battle that ensued to determine culpability.

Puleo is the author of seven narrative history books, including “Voyage of Mercy,” “The Boston Italians,” “A City So Grand,” “The Caning,” and the forthcoming “The Great Abolitionist: Charles Sumner and the Fight for a More Perfect Union.”

Eddie Carson, Dean of Multicultural Education at Governor’s Academy also collaborated on planning the series.

Estey and Bradbury talk about the months-long series that will include a kick off lecture, community conversations, and follow up proactive measures.

They discuss their multiple goals for the series: expanding the community’s awareness of systemic biases; fostering the pursuit of equity and diversity; and bolstering a commitment to be “not just non-racists but actively anti-racists as a whole community.”
Estey and Bradbury speak about Carson's March 5th kick off talk and Q&A, “Being Black in White Spaces: A Brave Talk for Racial Justice,” scheduled from 6:30 – 7:45 PM at FRS Unitarian Universalist Church on Pleasant Street.

They also describe three Community Conversations that will follow at the PEG Center on Harris Street, all at 6:30 PM. Mary Jacobsen speaks with Newburyport High School Investment Club physics teacher and club advisor Sean McCarthy and club officers Matt McDougal, Matt Hurley, and Stephen D’Ambrosio about the club’s recent first place win over 900 other statewide high schools in the Stock Market Game of the Securities, Industry, and Financial Markets Association Foundation.

The NHS club, sponsored by the Newburyport Education Foundation, took the win after only three years in operation.

McCarthy and the students talk about the workings of the Stock Market Game; why the club decided to invest in Bitcoin; what they enjoy about and how they benefit from participating in the club; why it’s important to learn about financial markets; and the club’s plans to defend its title during the next round of the Stock Market Game.

Mary Jacobsen speaks with Brian Greenberg, Media Director of the Newburyport Choral Society (NCS) and Penny Lazarus, Membership Director, about the NCS annual Spring concert scheduled for May 4th and 5th.

Greenberg and Lazarus speak about how the musical selections, curated by NCS Music Director Dr. Minji Kim, reflect the concert’s theme of “Resilience and Hope.” They discuss why Maurice Durufle’s renowned Requiem has been described as “peaceful and chant-like” in some parts, yet “exciting and bold” in others; what makes French composer Lili Boulanger’s Psalm 24 “majestic”; and how Rosephanye Powell’s “Cry of Jeremiah” achieves its “rousing heights.”

They also talk about the mysticism of North Shore composer Mary Montgomery Koppel’s “Stabat Mater Speciosa” and the lyricism of “Spring in My Hometown,” by Hye-Young-Cho, composer-in-residence for the National Chorus of Korea.

Greenberg and Lazarus also describe NCS’s Guest Conductor for the concert, Brad Dumont, who holds a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from Boston University and recently served as Director of Choral Activities at Assumption University.

Saturday’s concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s at 4 p.m. Both concerts will be held at the new Pentucket Regional High School Auditorium, 24 Main Street, Route 113, in West Newbury. An 18-piece orchestra and two soloists, soprano Katherine Maysek and baritone Will Prapestis will accompany the chorus.
