After breaking down the tenets of staying real in the visuals for his previous leak, Denver’s Saint Joe returns with “Dirty Hands,” a grimy banger off his upcoming album, ‘Thinning Out The Heard.’ Like previous singles “Being Real” and “Homicide Fetish,” this track also features a tough lineup of guests and some snarling production. On the mic, we’ve got fellow Denver rapper Iron Mic, who destroys the second verse, along with NYC spitter Chris Rivers, who bats cleanup with some blistering rhymes. Four years removed from his acclaimed Flight Patterns instrumental tape, DJ Concept returns with a sequel filled with slappers, funk, and laid-back meditations. The lead single “The Looking Glass” falls into that chill, introspective category with guest vocals from his Dirt Disciples teammate, Rome Clientel and singer, B. Marshall.

Marshall actually captures not just the vibe of the track, but Concept’s career in general when he croons on the hook, “My work is never done.” That’s because anyone following the Long Island producer/deejay knows dude must never sleep given his prolific output (do ya Googles). Although, who really wants him to catch any rest when he’s dropping heat like this? The same goes for Clientel, whose first verse is on some real, grown-man sh*t.

In addition to being an ill preview of Flight Patterns 2, the track is head-noddin’ treat for fans of Concept and Clientel’s previous work. With that in mind, if you somehow snoozed on their 2015 release as Dirt Disciples, The Ambition EP, be sure to pick that up after you give “The Looking Glass” the listens it deserves.

To say DJ Concept has been putting in work since the 2012 release of 'Flight Patterns' would be an understatement. From collaborations with the likes of Rome Clientel and Planet Asia to a series of solo projects, the Long Island-repping producer/deejay has been grinding nonstop. And that hustle continues with 'Flight Patterns 2,' a collection of sample-flipping slappers with a few choice features.

As Concept tells it, the creation of the second 'Flight Patterns' occurred similarly to the first one, because (as he implies in the title) he created the project during a flight from JFK to PHX. The thing is, it almost didn’t even happen. “TSA made me miss my flight and made me late for my meeting so I was tight,” he recalls, adding that he was so pissed by the time he got to PHX that he didn’t listen to the music for months. When he did, though? “I was like, ‘Damn, these tracks are ill,’” he says, so he sequenced the album and hit up some guests.

Those guests include fellow Long Islander John Jigg$ on the aptly titled “So Effortless”; his Dirt Disciples partner-in-rhyme Rome Clientel and singer B. Marshall on standout “The Looking Glass”; and Boston stalwart REKS on the equally smooth and off-kilter “Peep The Essence.” The remainder of the project is completely instrumental, however, there are some snippets of speeches peppered throughout to help tie the whole album together."

Beyond Concept’s sample flips and finely curated guest list, 'Flight Patterns 2' succeeds because of its sequencing and cohesion. You really get the feeling that he’s having fun here, which coincides with his own thoughts on his career at this point. 

“I'm in a good place in life so it flows easy,” he says of making music now. “I don't really care about what people think cause I know I make classics. That's how I think about my creativity.” He then adds that all he wants to do is make music. Sure, there are some emcees he’d like to work with, “but I just hope I make tracks that people bump forever.” It’s safe to say he shouldn’t have a problem accomplishing that given the material on 'Flight Patterns 2,' which is just as timeless as it is a complete blast to listen to.

'Flight Patterns 2' is now available via Crisis Center Collective and will be available for download through all major digital retailers, and wherever music can be streamed.

Ahead of his much-anticipated new LP, 'Eleven Chuck,' due out this Friday (Veterans Day), Seattle’s Carl Roe delivers another heavy hitting track, “Roe’s House,” that’s towering with wordplay and blistering bars.

The thing is, Roe’s rhymes are impressive beyond the fact that he’s a technical beast, and he makes that clear in the track’s hilarious intro. Over a vintage church sample, he performs an absurd Arnold Schwarzenegger impression (straight from 1999’s End of Days), adding a bit of levity to the track.

But “Roe’s House” is no joke, because Roe straight-up murders the layered, sample-flipping instrumental from Australian producer, Rahjconkas. His beat is all pianos, brass, and head-nodding drums, the perfect canvas for the Seattle native to showcase his burgeoning vocal skills and, of course, those immense rapping chops. 

On that note, Peep these bars from the final verse: “Just when you thought you seen the best of Roe, I made him greater/ Here’s some advice you can take away and save for later/ Kill your father like you’re Luke and say, ‘I made it, Vader’/ And don’t work with your idols if you don’t want to hate ‘em later.”

‘The Journey’ is a showcase of the brilliant production work of Spanish-German artist, Superior. His approach combines Golden Era instrumentals with a lineup of guest emcees who deliver sharp rhymes that touch on everything from bully raps to thoughtful introspection.

Superior’s intentions are clear right out of the gate with opener “Make The World Go,” a slapper with insights from two living underground legends in Blu and Edo G. From there, the instrumentals and features both keep the album balanced, tightly constructed, and flowing seamlessly.
