Exotic America

Written just before my move back to San Diego after a couple of decades living in LA. Paul Bleifuss is playing one of his hand-made custom drum kits and I recorded him at the Taylor Guitars performance venue in El Cajon. My brother, Doug Robinson, is playing bass guitar, and I get a chance to work out with all kinds of crazy percussion.

Flyin' In Her Dreams

"The Golden Feather" appears on MUSIC BUCKET, the second album of instrumental music written and recorded by San Diego musician/composer, Andy Robinson.

The Golden Feather

In "Junkmobile" everything that sounds like a gnarly synth is a stylophone, or two (it's monophonic, so I did a couple of tracks in order to get the harmonies). It's the instrument that slides in during the intro. I also use a stylophone section to on "Cartoon" - they are in the left channel, playing on the offbeats. There is a short solo where the instrument does its choking thing - the electrical contact necessary to get a clean note is a little iffy, and the instrument sounds like its clearing its throat. I love it. In the second B part of the song, the instrument jumps to the right channel for a little solo on the melody, and that's where it happens.

I Thought I Knew America

"Gravel Dance" is a fun tune, dedicated to my dear friend Richard Matthew. Compared to many people I've played with, Richard wasn't an accomplished musician, but he had a good ear, a lot of imagination, and he was a great musical companion. I pasted a short clip of his voice from a cassette letter he sent me many years ago into this song at about the 3/4 mark, because what he was saying and the lilt of his voice fit the feeling of the music.
