Soon, the question on everybody’s lips will be: “Have You Heard? Have you heard how The Muffinz rule the world?”. The Muffinz have unleashed their mysteriously beautiful world of eclectic soul to the South African public and they are set for world domination.

The music of The Muffinz is so new, yet so soulful, so accessible, so honest and so innocent, that it appeals to all age groups, races, classes and sexes. 

The five young musicians make a refreshing change from the usual run of the mill rappers and house DJs, who are currently dominating the popular music scene, in that they play real instruments, and they play them well. Added to that is all five musicians are great singers in their different genres of expertise.

Take for instance electric guitarist and vocalist, Atomza. His voice is best described as a young Michael Jackson meets Usher with a twist of rock. Drummer Keke then enters with his  Senegalese meets rumba vocals. The band switch from a groovy R&B rhythm led by acoustic guitarist Mthae and bassist Skabz, to a classy jazz guitar sound introduced by electric guitarist and acapella singer, Simz. And that by the way is just on one song!

That is why, to explain the band, they decided to call themselves The Muffinz. Explains Mthae: “We wanted a name that would be remembered, something catchy but a name that people would want to find out more about. Plus, we all come from different backgrounds musically and so we all bring different ingredients - as in the ingredients in a muffin.”

His quirky, eccentric and authentic fashion style, matched by his bewitching raspy voice prove that he is anything but ordinary.The debut single“Sista Kunjani”intricately showcased his distinct way of moulding and carving a post-modern eclectic genre which was emulated by many young musicians but never matched.In 2004 he released “Piece of Mind”, which marked the arrival of a super-star, spawning multiple hits,Rich with enchanting Xhosa lyrics and immaculately marrying Funk, Jazz, Soul, Pop, Traditional and Rock -  he made being an alternative musician popular in a time when it was still misunderstood.He would mimic his favourite stars, already envisioning a life as a rockstar.He developed a bold live persona that made him a crowd favourite.Like a true veteran,made music with Hugh Masekela, The Floacist (Floetry), Keith Murray,BlackCoffee.He recently launched a new digital platform, Mlok.co.za, which aims to showcase indie musicians to a wider audience. The venture sees him growing more into an entrepreneur and a mentor. Now an icon in the South African music landscape, MXO, is still full of surprises and continuously stretches himself as an artist. In an era, where some artists fold under the pressures of the music industry, he maintains an admirable originality. He is still “The Real MXO”.

48 heures avant sa sortie, le premier album d’un tourneboulant binôme sud-africain se dévoile en partie sur Le Grigri. Dernière trouvaille du label qui a fait découvrir Sibusile Xaba ou Thabang Tabane au monde entier, Dumama + Kechou s’imposent comme les nouveaux prophètes de la “Nomadic Future Folk”.

Il y a des oeuvres comme ça qui n’ont pas besoin de beaucoup de temps pour vous accrocher. Buffering Juju appartient à cette catégorie: dès la première écoute, on a senti qu’on tenait là un grand disque aussi moderne qu’intemporel. Il faut dire qu’on partait en terrain quasi conquis. Car ce premier album de la paire Dumama (Gugulethu Duma) et Kechou (Kerim Melik Becker), on le doit au label de Johannesburg, Mushroom Hour Half Hour. Celui-là même qui a fait connaître au monde entier deux nouveaux hérauts de la folk-jazz sud-africaine, deux voix magnétiques, deux habitués des ondes du Grigri, Sibusile Xaba et Thabang Tabane. 

Alliance entre une chanteuse-joueuse d’uhadi et un multi-instrumentiste capable de jongler entre guitare, synthés, guembri ou darbouka, Dumama + Kechou a imaginé son premier album comme une véritable histoire au long cours, celle d’une femme qui sort de prison. Sur sa route, de nombreux souvenirs lui reviennent, des rencontres se font, des transformations se mijotent. Sorte de parcours initiatique, onirique et fantastique, Buffering Juju impressionne par sa folk futuriste qui marie à merveille les instruments traditionnels xhosa et des textures proches du hip-hop. 

Pour Le Grigri et rien que pour Le Grigri, le duo a accepté de révéler, 48 heures avant sa sortie officielle, l’un des plus beaux extraits de ce disque fascinant. Sur “Wessi Walking Mama”, on retrouve un autre pilier de l’avant-garde sud-africaine, Siya Makuzeni du groupe Spaza. L’un des nombreux invités d’un disque bien habité dans tous les sens du terme puisqu’on y retrouve aussi la très free et spiritual clarinettiste de Chicago, Angel Bat Dawid. Pour le reste de ce bijou made in South Africa, il faudra patienter jusqu’au 20 mars. D’ici là, vous pourrez écouter “Wessi Walking Mama” environ 480 fois - oui, on a calculé, on est confinés.
