DIGITAL LOVERS (GEN045) by https://soundcloud.com/eilieneilien is a captivating and perplexing articulation, dreamlike and intimate throughout yet uncompromising and enveloping in its realization. Entranced voices appear doubled, shifted, they take on a shimmering, cool quality. Through careful sparse arrangements, living, breathing, discrete music environments result, constructed using ruminating trance plucks; huge drifting synth washes and gliding, metallic pads. Incidental concrète material, crisp bass pulses and uncanny sound objects remind the listener of the digital root and conception of this music, in which stripped down computer music traces come to life as an animated whole.

"Emotional audio synthesis ~ SuperCollider pop music ~ Digital daydreaming. 
The music on Digital Lovers is a special mixture of self-coded synthetic sounds and timeless pop-music. It refers to existing genres and phenomena, but defies any specific category creating a strong style of its own. 
My main sound producing tool is SuperCollider, a text-based audio coding platform. I’ve coded my own sounds, instruments and structures with the means of audio synthesis, sample manipulation and input signal modification. The thematic sphere floats between digital and organic. Synthetic walls of sound are mirrored to the mediations of the “natural” world, in the shape of field recordings, acoustic instruments and my voice. Love is searching it’s place in this spectre of digital and organic reality: excitement of future love, grief over fading love, love’s force for creation and transformative power of love.”

Marina Herlop is often described as a pianist, a lingering remnant of her classical training. But what strikes the listener on Herlop’s breakout track miu is the intricate trickery of her voice, tracing rhythmical clusters around the subtlest of musical beds, in a technique inspired by Carnatic music of Southern India. 

miu, the opening track of Herlop’s new studio album Pripyat, was among the first songs that the young Catalan artist made on a computer, after two albums - 2016’s Nanook and 2018’s Babasha - that brought spectral elegance to the sound of piano and voice. This spirit of adventure continues into Pripyat, Herlop’s first full album produced on a computer, and her most intensely emotional work to date. 

Listening to Pripyat you can feel the emotional toil and creative endeavour that went into the record. Fans of Nanook and Babasha will recognise the combination of melancholic piano and elegant vocal lines that is found on Pripyat tracks like abans abans. But Pripyat has a far fuller, almost chaotic sound when compared to Herlop’s previous work, with the addition of electronic drums, electric bass lines and a wealth of sublime production effects. 

Added to this production expertise are songs of incredible grace and poise. Kadish is a spectral torch song rendered in emotional 3D by Herlop’s gorgeous voice; ubunto has a feeling of deep longing and lingering sorrow; and shaolin mantis is like a pop song refracted through disorienting production effects and percussive vocal cut ups. Pripyat is the perfect combination of computer production trickery and intimate emotional release.

Gobstopper Records are proud to announce their first vinyl release – the debut EP from Iglew.

"I guess my music sounds the way it does because it's a product of my environment. I didn't grow up in a city and there's no underground electronic music scene here. When I started listening to electronic music, it was on headphones. It's only in the last couple of years that I’ve heard soundsystem music in it's intended environment. I'm hyper aware of how effective bass can be because I only really heard it properly recently."

Across its four tracks the EP explores a number of melodic, rhythmic and textural ideas. The synth flashes and silence in 'Sleep Lighter' sit in contrast with the sombre tones of 'Urban Myth', while the clattering percussion of 'Regalia' plays against the enveloping bass tones of closing track 'Cymatism'.

Currently residing in Leeds after a period in Brighton, he has been experimenting with sound systems, creating music which is simultaneously stark and subtle. Iglew discovered electronic music not through raves but through podcasts. Because of this, his compositional approach is based on harmony, melody and texture as opposed to dancefloor hype. 'Urban Myth' is a result of the belated immersion of an outsider into sound system culture.

after completing his last album 'artefact' thomas pujols felt the need to change nebulo's aural focus towards immediacy and beat-underlaid directness. in the summer of 2011 he recorded one draft track every day to substantiate his ideas and inspirations, and he used these drafts as resources for this release. to prevent the feeling of electronic coldness and to achieve an more organic texture unusual production devices like a 4-track recorder were used. each drum sample was chosen with extraordinary diligence, e.g. the clap sounds were entirely self-recorded on various locations. 'cardiac' is a diligently produced aural state of mind lying in the realm of experimental electronica - a delicate balance between fragility and gravity, ambience and rhythms. the ten tracks are built around abstract melodies, complex textures and warm synth tones, driven by expertly crafted and varied beat patterns, layered with sweeping modulated waves, glitches and noises. the 180gram vinyl version includes a download code for the album tracks plus 3 exclusive digital songs. limited to 100 copies.
