The First Kyiv Machine-Building Plant, formerly and famously known as “Bilshovyk” was founded back in 1882 and employed only 30 workers. Having survived the bombing during the war and a crisis at the end of the last century, the plant has survived to this day. “𝗕𝗶𝗹𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘃𝘆𝗸” is an example of decline, debt accumulation, and a problem for the state budget. All this is due to past corruption and inefficient governance. Currently, the main activity of 𝗞𝘆𝗶𝘃’𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲-𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 lies not in production, but in leasing its premises, which account for 75-80% of all income. The company itself is unprofitable, and the amount of debt to third parties, including tax debt, exceeds UAH 500 million. Today the enterprise is in the active process of preparing for privatization, which will attract funds to the state budget, opposing the multimillion-dollar debt situation that it now finds itself in.

Scary Beautiful by Nastia - "Bilshovyk"

“ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih” - Ukraine’s largest full-cycle metallurgical enterprise. This time filming took place in a truly unique and hauntingly breathtaking location -  the iron ore pit mine Quarry #3 of “ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih”. The company is part of the international corporation ArcelorMittal - the world’s leading producer of steel - from iron ore mining to steel production. The birth of steel begins in the open-pit mine where iron ore is mined with an iron content of up to 32%. Afterward, it is enriched in ore beneficiation plants, and iron ore concentrate gets extracted leaving it with an iron content of more than 65%. Then cast iron is smelted from semi-finished products and other raw materials in blast furnaces, which becomes the basis for the production of steel - the most common material in the world. 

“ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih” annually produces more than 6 million tons of steel, more than 5 million tons of rolled products, and more than 5 and a half million tons of cast iron.
The iron ore reserves in the company's two quarries will last for several decades. The #3 iron quarry supplies more than 14 million tons of iron ore per year.
The total area of the mining and processing production in ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is 4084.9 hectares of which the quarries take up 648 hectares, while the external waste dumps are 1119 hectares, the tailings - 863 hectares, and the industrial site - 822 hectares of land. 
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is the leading exporter of iron in Ukraine. 85% of finished products are transported abroad. Ukrainian steel is becoming the basis of structures in 65 countries around the world, in all climatic zones of Earth.
Modern and reliable infrastructure facilities around the world are being built from “ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih”’s steel: the Flame Towers skyscraper complex is the national symbol of Azerbaijan, the world's tallest skyscraper Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Olympic National Sports Complex, and the new terminal D of Boryspil International Airport in Ukraine, as well as the Shelter facility - a protective sarcophagus over the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

The Tunisian electronic music producer Ben Khlifa has joined Nastia’s rapidly growing record label NECHTO and is releasing a 4 track EP. 

Tracks from the EP were first played by Nastia in her audiovisual project Scary Beautiful. The intense, and at times obscure tracks consist of overwhelming and speedy energy, which perfectly fit the dynamic and hauntingly mesmerizing mood of the project, the label, and the atmospheric world Ben Khlifa converts into the audio form. 

Having started DJing at a very young age, the artist experimented with various genres, eventually realizng that he is most drawn to the raw energy of techno and was early inspired by Berlin and Detroit techno. The producer sees no limits in what one can achieve in the realm of music - music drives itself once it receives an external force.

The record label “NECHTO” created by Nastia (@nastia_ua) unveils a 5-track EP by R.M.K - a new alias of London’s electronic music producer, DJ, and Fossil Archive label head Rob Kirkaldy (@fossil_archive_rmk), also known as Roberto. The record demonstrates a faster and more intense take on the artist’s original sound. With a focus on the very core auditory aesthetics of raves, the tracks also incorporate a hypnotic groove element of groove. The EP comprises a thundering bass at higher tempos, whilst preserving a soul within the music itself. “The intention was to make a well-balanced EP aimed at the dancefloor, whilst showcasing a range of sounds that provide enough versatility to keep the listener interested throughout”, says the artist on his debut release under the R.M.K alias.

Apart from launching his own techno label Fossil Archive, Rob Kirkaldy has established himself as a notable figure both as a techno producer and a masterful DJ. His long-lasting dedication to electronic music has brought him to the world’s most renowned club culture establishments, including London’s Fabric, Berlin’s Tresor and Berghain, and many others. As part of the Scary Beautiful project and following Ballantine's with its notion of 'True Music' , Nastia has been pre-selecting unreleased tracks by producers from all over the globe, some of which you can hear in the episode’s DJ mix - later, most of these tracks will become a part of an LP that is going to be released on NECHTO.

For the first episode of Scary Beautiful - the audiovisual project created by DJ Nastia, the renowned DJ traveled to the Morozovsky Quarry to play a DJ set. The 6km long abandoned coal mine is located near the city Oleksandriia in Ukraine and its natural resources were mined at the location up until 2009, yet once the enterprise could not handle its debts, all work had to be stopped and employees cut loose, so soon after the quarry quickly filled with groundwater.  

What makes the Morozovsky quarry so overwhelmingly impressive is not just the size and scale of the coal mining technology of the not so distant past, but also its juxtaposition with nature that surely and steadily takes back its original and stunning form.

As the world has to adapt to a new pandemic reality, Nastia DJ is looking for new ways of supporting the global music community and club music through exposing fresh and upcoming talents. Scary Beautiful is aimed to not only support new artists, but also holds an objective of discovering our world anew and seeing it from a perspective that is so frightfully enchanting.

Scary Beautiful by Nastia - Morozovsky Quarry

For the second episode of Scary Beautiful - the audiovisual project created by DJ Nastia in collaboration with Ballantine’s, the DJ along her team visited the haunting area of Chernobyl in Ukraine - specifically the Chernobyl-2 facility, where the over-the-horizon radar station 'Duga' is located and where she played a DJ set. 

The Soviet over-the-horizon radar station "Duga" located at the Chernobyl-2 which is not far from Pryp’yat facility is one of three comparable stations that survived to this day. The obvious reason for the aforementioned was the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant - the destruction of the reactor of the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, located near the city of Pripyat, Ukraine. Until the mid-1980s, any information regarding the topic was classified which led to many speculations about the mysterious object. In terms of its impressive magnitude, the antennas of ‘Duga’ are 140m high and 300m wide. A rocket launched from the US reached the territory of Ukraine in just 20 minutes, so radars stationed at the border could detect the missile just five minutes before impact. Accordingly, an early warning system was required that was capable of detecting a rocket three to four minutes after launch. Undoubtedly, Chernobyl is a place that to this day stirs the hearts and minds of mankind.

Scary Beautiful by Nastia - Chernobyl-2 DUGA Radar

We continue our collective journey with DJ Nastia and Ballantine's across the hidden gems of Ukraine. The third enchanting location that Nastia visited with a DJ set is Tarakanivsky Fort - an architectural monument that received its name due to the nearby village of Tarakaniv. It is undoubtedly one of the most mysterious places in the Rivne region. Sadly, only ruins remain from the once majestic fortress. Tarakanivsky Fort is a prime example of how you can underestimate one's defenses. The fortress was built at the end of the 19th century to protect the western borders of the Russian Empire. From there the railway line passing was perfectly visible. But during World War I, the Russians decided they didn't need the fort. Therefore, the fortress was surrendered to the Polish side almost without a fight. Having regained their strength, they decided to return the fort, yet it took a lot of effort to do so. As a result, the fort, destroyed by its own artillery, was retaken.
During World War II, the fortress was once again surrendered to the enemies. This time - to the German invaders. According to some legends, the Germans tested a new secret nuclear weapon at the location. When it became clear that the surrender of Germany was imminent, the Germans poured concrete into some rooms and passages of the fort. Those passages have not yet been unsealed, so those parts of Tarakanivsky Fort raise even more questions. Every year the remains of the once beautiful structure and its mysterious stories attract more and more curious tourists.

Scary Beautiful by Nastia - Tarakanivsky Fort

The fourth episode of DJ Nastia’s music journey alongside Ballantine’s for Scary Beautiful takes us to the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine. Much can be said about the wilderness, grandeur and beauty of the Carpathians. The arc-shaped mountains stretch around 1,500 km through Central and Eastern Europe, and take up an area of 190,000 square kilometers, finding their home in countries like the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, and Ukraine. The Ukrainian Carpathians are mild peaks that reach as high as 2061m (mount Hoverla) and the extraordinary mountain scenery is the effect of past glaciation. The name itself is correlated with old Dacian tribes named “Carpes” or “Carpi” who lived in the large surrounding area which in the present day covers Romania and Moldova. The Carpathian Mountains captivate with their immaculate wilderness. The trees are coated by thick layers of moss and mushrooms sprout from fantastically odd tree stumps. Yet like with most things, not all is as flawless as it seems. Over the last 15 years, 800,000 hectares of forest have been cut down. Foresters say that this is allowed strictly with permits and the number of affected areas do not exceed those allowed in European countries, yet, unfortunately, illegal loggers find ways to prosper. Ecological experts say that unsupervised deforestation will increase the severity of floods and droughts.

Scary Beautiful by Nastia - Carpathians

The final episode of DJ Nastia’s music journey alongside Ballantine’s for Scary Beautiful delivers us to the industrial realm of ‘ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih’. The origin of the renowned steel factory dates back to 1934 when the first pig iron was produced. Today it is the largest enterprise in the mining and metallurgical industries - the colossal scale of the enterprise and its capabilities of a full metallurgical cycle make it unprecedented. The enterprise comprises such production facilities as mining and processing, producing coke, steelmaking, etc. with the main focus of the company being the production of rebar and wire rod.  
85% of the manufactured products from Ukraine are exported to new construction sites in 65 countries and the plant annually produces 6, 000, 000 tons of steel. Constructions like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the NSC Olympic Stadium in Kyiv, and even the protective sarcophagus over the 4th power unit in Chernobyl's nuclear power plant have all used materials produced at ArcelorMittal.  
Not only has ArcelorMittal been the largest foreign investor in Ukraine for the past 15 years, but the company also strives to transform all enterprises of the corporation to produce green and environmentally friendly steel. As an example, since 2006 air emissions have reduced by 42%, wastewater discharge decreased by 78%, and waste dumping by 23%.

   For the second instalment of Scary Beautiful, Nastia visited Chernobyl - specifically the Chernobyl-2 facility, where the Soviet over-the-horizon radar station 'Duga' is located.
