This song is about the Mechanical Turk also known as the Automaton Chess Player which was constructed by Wolfgang Von Kempelen in 1770. It was purported to play a strong game of chess against any human opponent. It was supposed to have played Napoleon Bonaparte who attempted to cheat it.  The Automaton played its final game in 1783 in Paris against Benjamin Franklin.  It was destroyed by fire in the Chinese Museum of Charles Willson Peale in 1854. Rumours about it being a hoax started in 1834 onwards until The Chess Monthly 1857-61 published articles By Silas Mitchell about its secret box concealing an expert player.
