we were founded by a norwegian guy back in the 20s
he said, "our beaches shall remain forever free of defilement and hurdy-gurdies"
(apparently?!)

he said, "beauty, to us, is more precious than silver and gold
or cabbage and potatoes"
(yeah, i don't know...he did say that, though.)

i grew up with mount saddleback in the east and the pacific in the west
caught between LA and san diego, mojave and the border and the rest

he said, "i'm gonna build a fake spanish colonial town
like the things they build to tear other things down"

and we filled up with rich people and hippies later on
but now it's mostly just republicans and soccer moms

and at night through the windows we hear the marines
and the kids eat chipotle™ and talk about leaving

they talk about leaving

annalise, well, i make it sound bleak, but it's not that bad
and i think it's the prettiest hometown that i could have had
