If Kim Young iLL hasn’t been on your radar, he would be now, and even i you still haven’t heard the name, you would’ve heard his music somewhere on a dance floor this last few months. His latest release alongside Duv Tales has been lighting up dance floors recently all over Oslo, and as a DJ he’s been a presence in some of the city’s favourite DJ booths, including his regular spot as the frontman for the club concept, UNTS

His no stranger to the Jaeger Mix either, having made a previous appearance on the mix series. That one featured some tracks du jour, lighting up the DJs playlist at that time, and while House music remains central to his approach for this edition, he touches on elements of breakbeats and minimal soundscapes across this session. Kim Young iLL brings streaks off summer through this mix, recorded back in May, setting a tone for a busy season ahead for the UNTS resident.

Ornella has been a fixture in Oslo’s clubbing scene since before she was a DJ. A regular presence on the dance floors of Villa and Jaeger, Ornella eventually made the leap to the other side of the booth, encouraged by peers that had seen a nascent talent. 

Her presence on dance floors are still consistent, but in recent years she’s been orchestrating it, rather than participating in it. Known for sets that cultivate mood and atmosphere, Ornella has been a favourite in DJ booths around Oslo and further afield. When she’s not in the booth she’s facilitating the scene with her work as the booker for Gehor, adding to the rich sonic landscape of the city. 

Ornella makes her debut on Jaeger Mix with a 2 hour sonic journey through House music’s extended reach in an atmospheric and airy progression.

In plaintive, subtle tones, Swedish DJ/Production trio Inkfish opened up the floor in Jæger’s basement this Sunday for The Jæger mix. luring the listener in through submissive melodies and airy soundscapes, Inkfish, mix takes a mercurial turn through the first few tracks coinciding with an immediate shift from subtle melodic expeditions to repetitive beats. 
 
Inkfish have been making music since the 90’s and have featured on classic compilations from Renaissance and Ministry of Sound as well as releasing a host of original material on labels like Azuli, Bedrock, Doppelganger, Mistake Music, Parquet and Stereo Productions from an early stage in their career. They often hop over the border from Sweden, playing Påfulgen’s exclusive dance floor or joining Det Gode Selskab crew for their weekly Sunday evenings at Jæger. On this particular occasion, Ivaylo propositioned Inkfish for a Jæger mix, where he coaxed an exclusive early set out of the headliners to open the floor for Tod Louie and co. 
 
Give us an introduction
Three handsome fellas from Sweden releasing semi decent records recently on Traum schallplatten and Parquet . Now we are mainly focusing on reestablishing our own label.
 
Æ. What is your earliest memory of a piece of music?
I. Getting so old it´s hard to remember, but Joy division, Happy Mondays and New Order is three band´s worth mentioning.
 
Æ. What sound or genre do you feel represents what you try to do through your selections?
I. Mixing up different genres into the typical Inkfish sound.
 
Æ. What do you consider your role as DJ should be?
I. It all depends on your slot time, we appreciate a guy who makes a proper warm up then one coming on playing the biggest tunes from the beginning to the end. As a dj your job is to take your crowd on a journey from the beginning to the end, educate people in music and always be in the forefront of finding new producer talents.
 
Æ. What was the theme of your mix?
I. The Inkfish sound :)
 
Æ. Which track in your Æmix best represents the theme of your mix and why?
I. All of them are equally important in the mix.
 
Æ. What do you hope your Æmix relays to the listener? 
I. Hopefully to get off the couch and get into a club.
 
Æ. What’s next for you after this mix?
I. First we got our Tuesday residency coming up again and then we're currently working on a half album and some exciting collaborations coming up.

A visit from Jarle Bråthen always leaves a mark at Jæger. The Full Pupp associate, spends most of his time in Berlin these days, but whenever he comes to Oslo, he always makes a stop at Jæger, bringing a flurry of energy and colour to our booth with cosmic sets, bordering on psychedelic, staking an infectious claim on the dance floor. 

Bråthen is a stalwart in the Space Disco scene in Norway, putting original music out exclusively for Prins Thomas’ Full Pupp label. He’s been spending most of his time in Berlin in recent years and leaving an indelible mark on that city, playing regularly  at the likes of Bohnenegold and Paloma Bar. 

On a recent trip to Oslo, he  made a stop at Ivaylo’s Jæger Mix to lay down a recorded set for the series. Jarle Bråthen recored an enigmatic set for the occasion, one that re-evaluated the early, opening set.

Playing in the very same textures you might year at peak time, but slowing them down to a more accessible tempo, the mix entertains and pulses with a dance floor at the same time. Listening to the mix on a Wednesday morning, it fits effortlessly between the morning coffee and breakfast routine, while at the same time preparing you for the working day ahead. 

Jarle Bråthen’s career has some interesting developments ahead too and we’re always curious how Berlin’s audiences differ from our own so we sent hime some questions to that effect, and his answers entertain as much as the set. 

Æ. Hello Jarle, it’s been a while since you’ve been at Jæger. What’s been some of the highlights for you since your last visit?
JB. One of my continuing highlights are that my club night “FjernstYrt” is taking the shape towards what I’m aiming for. Going on at ​Bohnengold​ for 2,5 years now the night is vibrant, full almost every time and lot of DJ’s contact me to play there. In addition to curating the night I also want, in the long run, to function as a facilitator of gigs.
Æ. What’s currently inspiring you beyond music?
JB. Sitting in a park in Berlin with closed eyes soaking in bird tweets.

Æ. We caught you on a bit of a tour in Oslo this weekend. What do you miss about Norway?
JB. I miss the clean and good tasting tap water.

Æ. How do you spend your time in Berlin at the moment?
JB. Without stressing I try to produce as much music as possible.

Æ. As the epicentre of electronic music, is there anything exciting happening in the German capital you can share with us?
JB. Not in particular but I realise that once you think you kind of “know your way around the rope”, something new comes popping up.

Æ. As a highly adaptable DJ how do you find you might have to adapt your set between Norwegian audiences and German ones?
JB. Since there is no official closing hour in Berlin I’m used to “take my time” to build the night. So for Norway, my sets will be more compressed because of the early closing time. It depends on the venue but sometimes people tend to be a bit restless and “demand” to be entertained rather than contributing to the party. In those cases I have to dig for my most “accessible” tracks to make the floor going. I consider myself more an entertainer than a music missionary ;-)

Æ. Give us an introduction to Jæger mix.
JB. The mix pretty much sums up how I DJ at the moment. I spend a lot of time listening to tracks and having a thorough selection process of which I bring into my “bag”. I really like to “wing it” and trust that my mentioned selection progress is strong. Normally my mixes start at a slow BPM (90-105). I tend to make a chill or lounge kind of feel but lately I want to show that I also play more like, lack of a better word, “Primetime” tracks. On that note and experience shows that my notion of “Primetime” tunes could be perceived as “laid back” for others ;-)

Erik Molthe, a Norwegian DJ and producer based in Oslo. His name is a pun on the “balearic” – see Balearic (music). 

Resident of the Dirty Grooves evening and a stalwart on the Oslo DJ scene since 2001. Erik has played with Desyn Masiello, Omid16B, Demi, Danny Howells, Rowan Blades, Luke Fair, Nic Fanciulli, Audiofly and Yousef among others and his career has taken him across the known world, playing  Japan (Tokyo), England (London), Mexico(Guadalajara), Russia(Murmansk), Poland (Warszawa, Szczecin), Croatia (Pula, Rijeka), USA (San Francisco, Miami, New York), Bulgaria (Sofia), Finland (Helsinki), Sweden (Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö), Latvia (Riga, Daugapils, Balvi) and Dubai.   

As BalErik he has released music on Global Underground, Discoteca Music, Plastic City, B.E.B.R, Union Jack Records. His sound fuses elements from different genres and falls somewhere between the Tech and House genres. 

His dedication to finding new music has gained him support from the likes of Digweed, Deep Dish, Behrouz and Nic Fanciulli and Desyn Masiello, who gave him a position as A&R for his Alternative Route record label. 

In 2007 balErik set up a new digital label, Discoteca Music, with his partners Dana Bergquist, Tom Morgan, Luke Fair and Somnus corp. The label has numerous successful releases including two that are included on Renaissance and Global Underground compilations.

BalErik makes his second appearance on the Jæger mix this week with a mix that is a “little more Detroit techno” than his first for the mix series. Playing our courtyard during one of the many blistering evenings we’ve had in Oslo, BalErik puts the soul back into electronic music without sacrificing energy.

Chirping synthesisers and luxurious pads float above deep, plundering bass and rhythm sections pounding out 4/4 beats at excessive tempos. BalErik’s set doesn’t pander to the idea of an opening set with the Dirty Groove resident giving us a glimpse of peak time during one of his nights.

Energetic and lively, but  still very soulful, BalErik shows there’s more to his sections than his name might suggest.  

Æ. Give us an introduction to your Jæger mix.
B. The mix is a blend of some old and new tunes, some I have played a lot in clubs and bars, and some I have not had the chance to play out yet. Tracks from Dub Taylor, Deniro, Afriqua, Roman Lindau, Cari Lekebusch etc.

Æ. How is it different from the last Jæger mix you did and how is it the same?
B. I guess this mix has a little more Detroit techno vibe vs more house vibe on the first one.

Æ. What have been some personal highlights for you since your last appearance?
B. I did the most gigs in a year that I have ever done in 2017, which was good, since I had lost my daytime job. Many of the gigs were 4-6 hours sets, which really gave me the chance to use a lot of different music from my collection, from downtempo to techno.

Vibeke Bruff has had an extremely busy year. Since her last appearance for the Jæger mix, she won the Burn residency as the Scandinavian representative for the series, with a mentorship in Ibiza and a series of sets around Europe following the program. She continued to be a presence in Oslo and Norway, with her dance card regularly punched at places like Jæger, Villa and various summer festivals.
She came to the Æmix on the back of Sommerøya this year, playing to the Techno stage at their new Ekebergparken location and stepping into our booth the very next day with a completely different set. Playing in the deeper corners of Tech, Vibeke offers a luscious, embracing mix that floats in the ephemeral. The mix moves at a reserved pace with pads and attenuated strands of synthesised melodies splintering away from the steady percussion and rhythm.

The first Jaeger mix of 2019 comes via Marius Sommerfeldt. A languid mix from one half of De Fantastiske To sets a serene scene for 2019. Ornate electronic extemporisations that appear to inspired by nature swarms around House beat arrangements. Marius travels the world for musical vignettes from the four corners of the world with deep, House grooves underpinning the mix.

The mix follows De Fantastiske To’s 2018 release on Paper Recordings, “Rett på Sak,” which was a slight departure for he and Ravi Brunsvik from the neo Disco-House they made in the past.

Marius has also been occupied on the other side of the booth in 2018 as part of the team behind Oslo Camping and now, Tromsø Camping. With a booking policy that accentuates the playful (quite literally) theme of the venues, they’ve brought the likes of Eli Escobar and Mood II Swing to Oslo this past year.

Jaeger Mix #127

Bendik Baksaas is back at Jæger, and this time he is in the booth. Following the release of he and Fredrik Høyer’s multimedia collaborative LP, “Ode til alt Ute” Bendik Baksaas came to Jæger to join Ivaylo for his weekly Jæger mix last Sunday.

Bendik moves effortlessly from the stage to the booth crystallizing his production work in the context of this mix. He is a versatile artist,  constantly working on new music and exciting new projects; skills and pursuits that easily transfer between genres styles and even disciplines.

He approaches his Jæger mix with the sonic aesthetic, coaxed from original material that he and Joar Renolen have been cultivating together recently. Minimalists arrangements anchored by the resolute march of 4-4 kicks loop into infinity like something transferred from the philosophy of Steve Reich to the dance floor.

There’s a transcendental quality to the Baksaas mix that soars to unfathomable heights as the listener gets swept up in the repetitive waves of his sonic assemblage. Cutting pieces down to the their essential elements and combining them in sinuous threads across different textures, he creates a stark electronic landscape through his mix. 

His Jæger mix wavers little from its sonic aesthetic, with a DJ mix coming together as its own artistic expression rather than just a selection of songs. Bendik Baksaas exemplifies the DJ as artist through this mix and there is a very prominent connection between his set and the music he makes today, across his various musical projects.

BLCK affiliate and Deep-Tech aficionado Julie Reistad makes her debut on the Jaeger Mix with a selection of tracks that traverse the emotive depths between Techno and House music. Frosty atmospheres and piercing melodic highs contrast chasmic excavations in the lower frequencies where the bass a kick drum reside. 

Stephan Bodzin and the Life and Death label create touchstones that in still a particular mood throughout this mix. Thriving in minimalism and a vacuous ether, Reistad favours wispy layers punctuated by immense grooves. Progression is key in her selections with tracks floating toward an unknown destination, with Reistad’s selections following the peaks and troughs of her own narrative. Her set follows the contours of an early evening at Jaeger laying the foundation for the rest of the night ahead. 

Julie Reistad is a prominent figure on the Oslo DJ circuit and as a producer.  She plays every week around Oslo making regular appearances at places like Villa and Storgata 26, hosting events like Desperate Housevibes. She’s also a regular guest at Jaeger’s Mandagsklubben.
