Another of my favourite poems (or should I say part poem of a greater work). I love the juxtaposition of the narrator's personal voice that intrudes into the instructional persona. It reminds me of someone looking out of the window, someone perhaps who's love of nature and milder things is a contradiction of war and the 'lesson' being delivered.

What I am taken with in this poem, is the way the poet has coloured the Combe an even darker place through his writing by virtue of what they did there, and also elevated the badger to a higher status amongst English beasts. Almost a murder of nobility and then a sacrilege via feeding this revered creature to the hounds. It isn't a melodic poem, far from it, but it's a poem for me that draws its strength from the image and the tone painted through words alone. Edward Thomas definitely darkened that place. It is a little different to the earlier poem I recorded by Robert Frost, the tonality of the two have a different polarity I think, but a very similar attraction, both in their way being dark and deep..

Hello, I hope you enjoy your visit to this site. This one is where I want to place my readings and interpretations of other peoples poetry. I have a number of favourite poems by many poets and I love to try and breathe some life into them by lifting them from the printed page to the ear. Most of us first encounter poems on the printed page but they can also have another dimension in the physical world of sound. How those dimensions work is down to the interpreter. I believe we all process poetry in our own way and hear it in our own way. The readings here are my own responses and I do hope some will resonate with other listeners. If they don't no problem and I just thank you for your time. For my own part I simply enjoy trying to make those transfers of the written word into the physical world of sound and many people believe that poetry is meant to be heard,  Peace to all....Neil
