For years I thought that the loop rendering feature in the Freeware HammerHead Rhythm Station was broken. Then almost by accident, I got it working. Here's a little "Groovy" tribute file I put together featuring the HammerHead's 10 default songs or rhythm patterns.
Each one is played at its correct tempo for 4 bars, and then morphs into the next one at a different tempo. The track names (or patterns) are: 1) Acid_145 bpm, 2) Chemical_143 bpm, 3) Coolhop_115 bpm, 4) Hardcore_180 bpm 5) HipHop_120 bpm, 6) Jumpdude_180 bpm, 7) Jungle_155 bpm, 8) Lay Back_115 bpm, 9) Mellow_140 bpm, & 10) Sharky_110 bpm - My firm favourite!

This file was re-rendered from the original rendered mono loops directly from HammerHead and the tempo changes were automated in Reason 7.1

Mist At Dawn Midi Drum Track 120bpm

The original cassette demo I loaded into my Ensoniq ESQ-1's sequencer after a 28 year break. This cassette was purchased with the synthesizer way back in July 1987. It was written by Doug Nestler. https://soundcloud.com/douglasnestler

Note that what you hear is the ESQ-1 actually physically playing the original factory voices “live” (also loaded in from the same cassette tape) in January 2015 via its on board 8 track sequencer – the audio was captured directly into a Saffire 6 USB Audio Interface from the ESQ-1’s stereo audio outputs, recorded  using Reason (7.1). A PCM Wave file was rendered of the finished recording, which was then converted into an MP3 using Goldwave.

In 1987 this was pretty sensational, as it was the first time you could hear so many different voices being played at the same time from one unit.

The demo sequences come backed up on an audio cassette and you load the sounds and sequences from the cassette into the synth. I loaded it up last night having not heard it for nearly thirty years. It's amazing it still works. Enjoy! 

The Classic ESQ-1 patches used: BASS 1.0, PLKBRS, MIAMIW, KICK, KICK+SIMS, REED, PIANO1, MRIMBA, 3TRUMS, BOTTLS, BNDBEL, 2 COOL, WAVBEL and SYNLED.

There's nearly 4 minutes worth in this piece, as I cycle through the patches, alternating voices to play each of the 3 parts. I repeated it a few times for good measure (no pun intended).

For me it gets good towards the end when the strings and bass come in. There's 7 voices playing at that point.

China Girl (David Bowie Cover)

Here's a tune I created inspired by a couple of 4:4 drum exercises from the book "So You Want To Be A Drummer" By Eddie McNeil (originally published by Island Music Ltd. in 1977). 

The two patterns used as a starting point were Ex.55 & Ex.56 on Page 74. Originally intended for Cymbal and Snare only, I swapped the Snare Drum parts to create an ominous and quirky Bass Drum part instead.

Separate triplet Ride Cymbal patterns (1-2-3, 2-2-3, 3-2-3, 4-2-3) and Snare Drum parts were subsequently added to fill out the basic beat in later sections of the song.

The patterns are played in the sequence 55, 56, 55 over a 3:4 time signature. It was all done in Reason 6.0 with the standard factory sound library, augmented by synth sounds and a combinator from the "Synth Nation" Refill by Samplefiends and a Bass Drum combinator from the "Hitman 2" Reason Refill by -008'.

I programmed a pattern into Cakewalk Express as a midi file, imported it into Reason and rendered it as a wav and created a rex loop using Recycle Lite. I then applied a "thrash metal" effect to the loop so it sounds more like a heavy rhythm guitar than a drum pattern. Then I added a bass drum part, and a bass guitar part and so on.

Ode to Eddie McNeil

Originally recorded for the https://soundcloud.com/davidbowiewemissyou/ page in January 2016, as a tribute to David Bowie and to help raise money for local bush fire victims in WA. Gosh, is it a year already? R.I.P. David Bowie.
Purists might be horrified to note I used some bits from a midi file to help out with the drums, bass and so on, as this was supposed to be put together in 3 hours or less. I played acoustic and electric guitar and did the vocals. The rest is a midi robot in Propellerhead Reason. The Copyright of the original song remains property of its owner(s).

WA Loves David Bowie

Space Oddity (David Bowie Tribute Cover) by Neil Paddock

I heard this song, Old Man on Neil Young's Harvest Album when I was very little. I have always loved this song.

I eventually decided to give it a go in November 2015, and this is the result.

I played the guitars, the bass, the keyboards and did the vocals. I have a drum machine in Propellerhead's Reason keeping the beat. It's handy like that.

The image is of me in Bunnings with some safety goggles on and a bit of Paint,net tomfoolery. You can still see the shelves in the reflection.

Alabama by Neil Young - Originally released in 1972 on the Harvest Album. It's not very politically correct, but I like the tune. 
This version was done about 18 months ago with a Strat, an Aria Les Paul, a Squier Bass and Propellerhead Reason providing the drums, programmed by me. I didn't really use the guitar in the photo on this track. Sorry.

This is a stereo recording at 120 bpm of the complete set of Factory Patterns (including Rock and Latin Percussion)  that come pre-programmed on the Yamaha RX-17 Drum Machine ("Digital Rhythm Programmer"), a somewhat underrated 1980's drum machine I have owned since 1987. 

** These are the original, unaltered sounds. The machine has not been "circuit bent" in any way shape or form! **

Originally recorded in December 2012 using Reason 6.5.2, a Focusrite Saffire USB 6 Interface and a Dell Inspiron desktop computer.  There's a couple of repeats of each pattern (in most cases).

Incidentally, I have released a software (sample based) drum machine RX-17 Emulation (for Registered  Reason Users only) that recreates all these patterns in two different combinators for Reason 6.0 and above.

Here's all 30 of the pre-programmed patterns from the Yamaha DD-5 Drum Machine. Recorded into a Focusrite Saffire USB 6 and Reason 6.5.2 with a single guitar lead.

A popular thing to do with these nowadays is "circuit bending" - bolting on additional electronic gubbins to the old unit to make the original sounds distorted. 

This one is as it would have been when new - with no circuit bending whatsoever.

A number of years ago I improvised a piano part and left record on. Some 13 years later, I have returned to this track to tidy it up. It weighs in at a chunky 6 minutes, but on the basis it represents a statement about a person's life, I can live with that. I specifically went for the feelings underneath this track. I wonder if you can relate to them. This was created in Reason 10 based on the original midi recorded on a Yamaha PSR-2000, and includes some BBC Symphony Orchestra sounds courtesy of Spitfire Audio and the rather scrummy U-He Zebra 2 synth, used in conjunction with Acoustica's Pianissimo and Reason's Parsec 2. There are some Miroslav Strings too.
