To celebrate Kyma Komplex’s first anniversary, the new Mexican label serves up a superb ‘Varias Artistas’ compilation with music from new and old souls around the world. Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist anbu translates femine energy and sweet melancholy inspired by retro songs and all variations of “waves”s and takes a darker approach with ‘Phantoms in the Forest’.

Operating from sundered soils, Eftersom is a triangle formed between Ravage Sentimental, close collaborator Jérôme Darmois, and Chris Vella aka Moderne Romance. The term “Eftersom” is used as a nod to their cross-border bond, a bond galvanized by a simple love of music, unwavering creative drive, and a fair collection of imperfect studio gear.

With their LP “Lie” on Paradise Children Records lined up for the second half of 2023, here the trio present “Tourne Tourne”, a precursor to the project which comes coloured with remixes made with love by Niv Ast, Mufti, Radial Gaze, and Ravage Sentimental herself. Radial Gaze offers up two unique takes: a ‘Pop’ and an ‘Indie’ version, by the way. The prolific Russian duo, formed by skilled producers Andrey and Stas, spared no efforts to deliver such insightful interpretations. 

Premiered here, their 'Pop' remix lays pellucid twinkles over tight, sharp rhythms, bringing the energetic original to a journey through the low-BPM realm wrapped with a Synthpop crust and a sober but upbeat gait.

On the road for a little longer than a year now, the cool Mexican label Kyma Komplex has been featuring some of the finest artists of the so-called Indie Dance/Dark Disco scene plus some spot-on flirting with other genres such as House, Techno, and Trance. Sixtoagusto (SXDNS031), Diaz Tech (SXDNS089/FREEDL013), Mad Slow, Mverto Futura, Manu Barcelo (SXDNS344), Edd Brave (FREEDL033), Cali Burton, Seli (SXDNS360), Corresponsal, and Veltran (FREEDL050) are just a few of the names on board. 

For its next instalment, the rising imprint opens its doors one more time for the skilled Brazilian producer Lucas Novaes, who debuted on Kyma with a remix for Mad Slow’s “Detroit” released last year. For his forthcoming “Ganas” EP, the Paulista artist invited some interesting names for the remix duties: Ludmila Fuks (SXDNS361), Abby Knives (SXDNS299), Pvlomo (SXDNS098/FREEDL045), and Panko delivered shiny contributions to the EP.

Premiered here, the title track presents its credentials from the very beginning with its super fat bassline perfectly paired with rhythmic synth layers and stabs. The ominous vocal hooks, which cannot go unmentioned, deliver a stunning ghostly aura to the rich theme despite its minimalistic construction.

For his forthcoming endeavour, “Synthetic Glory”, coming soon on the competent Paisley Dark, J.R. cooked two nervous originals and gathered a proper line-up of superstars for the remix duties: Mindbender (BANDCAMP003), Rude Audio, Hunterbräu, Högt I Tak (SXDNS179), and Man2.0 (SXDNS081/FREEDL002) have definitely raised the bar of the release with their insightful interpretations.

Despite the high quality of the remixes, we opted to go with the title track for our review. Intense and robust, “Synthetic Glory” marks with grandeur this new phase of James’ work in which he explores his EBM, Industrial, and Cold Wave influences to deliver obscurity-meets-groove cuts. If not suitable for pool parties, no problem: foggy and darkened dance floors it is!
