Sonido Moderna es un colectivo y plataforma de eventos fundada en el 2016 que busca exponer, promover y diseminar a lo que ellos llaman “electrónica de diseñador” en la limitada escena Guatemalteca. Siempre nadando contra-corriente, debido a su orientación sonora; han logrado presentarle a su público muchos exponentes e influencias de la estética que buscan. En conmemoración a este intercambio cultural y su 4to aniversario; el 02 de Noviembre del 2020 finalmente se lanzan a sacar su primer compilado de producciones originales. El compilado busca reforzar los cimientos alternativos del sonido y exponer talentos locales propios del colectivo junto a amigos y colaboradores internacionales de orígenes tan variados como Turquía, Austria, Ucrania, México y Colombia.

El track L Lounge, en palabras del propio Alf Champion: 

"L Lounge es un homenaje a un lugar en el que pase muchas horas de mi infancia… era un cuarto amplio localizado en el patio trasero de la legendaria casa de los abuelos de Mario Russell (uno de mis mejores amigos de siempre) donde pasamos horas jammeando, experimentando, creando y demás. Se vivieron varias fiestas memorables allí, era un lugar apartado de los adultos y con una vibra bastante chill; El lugar fue bautizado como “El Lounge” por Russell y como en todas las historias El Lounge eventualmente llego a su fin. Así que el único recuerdo que nos queda de ese gran lugar esta en esta canción con bajos alocados, ritmos descontrolados y voces con rastros de estupefacientes."

The rising star Spanish label Espacio Cielo, finely and competently curated by master Parissior, opens its doors to receive the owner of one of the most prolific and acclaimed independent labels in the history of the solar system: Nein Record’s supreme boss Neil Parnell aka Tronik Youth (SXDNS050). In his "Freakscene EP", Sir Parnell has shown an exquisite taste in creating proper underground electronic music combining Techno, Rave and Disco influences. Both "Freakscene" and "Effing & Jeffing" are two raw and danceable cuts that, accompanied with riveting remixes by Tiempo de Maldad (SXDNS173) and Parissior (SXDNS206), will unavoidably delight the lovers of darker industrial sounds out there.

In the piece we were asked to review, a non-stop groovy and percussive synth layer triggers an almost unbearable craving to dance to it on a packed dance floor as if there were no tomorrow. The industrial-like FXs give the impression you are surrounded by machines that felt the same craving and were brought to life by the intensity of "Freakscene", whose title was clearly justified by this weird scenario. Kudos, Neil, you did it again!

The beginning of 2021 sees electronic trailblazers Nothing Is Real showcase the truly global nature of their expansive sound and vision by profiling five Mexican artists on a compilation EP entitled ‘Made in Mexico’. Featuring a diversity of tracks from friends and collaborators Mufti, Montessori, Javier Martinez & Ulises Arrieta, Collossio & Cabizbajo and Tapia, this release demonstrates the deep roots that Nothing Is Real have made within the South American continent, as they put the talents of five swiftly rising Mexican producers on display.

Mufti opens the compilation with “Fields of Passion”, a slow burner that builds on the iconic new wave influences that Nothing Is Real are now known for. Throbbing basslines roll underneath shimmering synths that echo through a cavernous atmosphere, creating a sonic space in which the remainder of the EP flourishes beautifully. Following this up with elegance, Montessori taps the talents of Gael Gael for a collaborative venture, “Avant Garden”. As gentle increases in momentum build to a dramatic climax, the track serves as a prime example of the hypnotic rhythms and emotive melodies that Nothing Is Real are known for. Reaching the mid-point of the compilation, the duo of Javier Martinez & Ulises Arrieta keep the pace high with a six-minute jam that blends circular synth patterns, tribal drum fills and a solid, rolling 4/4 beat, before Collosio & Cabizbajo take a detour into electro with “Rapto”. On this track, the pair create something beautifully spooky out of futuristic FX and creative sonic manipulations that float above a gloriously resonant synth bass. Taking subtle cues from both Vangelis and vaporwave, this one is an impressive demonstration of how far the Nothing Is Real sound can reach. Closing the compilation with “Orbit”, a laudable display of musicality, Tapia treats us to a two-minute instrumental intro before a rapturous beat enters the mix.
