Nobody Moves

Hailing from Munich, Alemao has been on the road for quite some time now. In his more-than-a-decade-long journey, he has not only lived but also rocked the boat in many European cities, always focusing on delivering high-quality dance-floor-oriented electronic music without respecting boundaries when it comes to fusing and twisting his many an influence. Cosmic Afro, Cosmic Disco, Trance, House, Techno… everything he has ever got in touch with is there, somehow, in his still not abundant but creative output.

In his debut on Quixotical Records, the cool Vilnius/Buenos Aires-based label steered by Poulper (SXDNS146/FREEDL028) and Aurum Miles, his “Rawheit” EP proves the point and showcases the capabilities of the skilled artist. On the remix duties, Favio Inker, Rem's Martinez (SXDNS108), and Yellowteeth.

The track we were solicited to review/premiere pays a tribute to the groove. In French, not in German as expected, though. “Et Boum! C'Est Le Groove”, despite a certain minimalistic atmosphere, gathers many elements that enrich the theme. Arpeggiated synth layers, ominous stabs, rhythmic leads, and percussive elements get seamlessly together to deliver a hefty and well-constructed cut.

For the fans of Neo Italo Disco out there, this beast right here is a must-have! “Metamorphose”, the closing track of the forthcoming EP of the beloved Hamburg-based duo/couple Bizzarro Universe (SXDNS286) on Verflixt, comes with an upbeat atmosphere evoked by a splendid bassline, beautiful synth layers & leads, and vibrant laser-like percussive shots. Creativity and craftiness inspired by freaking outfits, flamingos, and lots of fun – the characteristic trademark of the rising and shining German artists.

If you haven’t heard about them before, it’s probably because you spent the summer in a cave or in a desert island because Danny & Nianova’s last months were extremely busy and noisy. Martians heard about them! Charismatic, they bring their energetic attitude while on stage to their productions. No room for gloominess! Happiness and let’s-party-hard are the way they express their sonority. And for their fourth appearance on the also Hamburg-based Verflixt, they stuck once again to their successful formula and brought to life two well-constructed originals: the title track, "Speed of Light", which received two ace remixes by David Body (SXDNS322) and Louis de Tomaso, and the beast premiered here.

Destination Madrid: Penrose Records founder David Ponziano returns to the controls with two high voltage originals and remixes from Alvaro Cabana & Julian Sanza and Undo…

‘Blindfold’ taps into a vibrant, poppy, synth-heavy sound. Sitting somewhere between Kraftwerk and Underworld with an added vocal call to action, this pushes all the right buttons with an unrelenting groove and strong sense of triumph running throughout. Remix-wise these elements are flipped into a deep cosmic chug as 2020 Soundsystem / Silver City maverick Julian Sanza and Holographic Planes’ Alvaro Cabana go dark mode with an absurdly powerful and heady workout. 

The work continues with ‘Where You From?’ A dramatic slab of bleep-fuelled tech that’s reminiscent of the mid 90s German Tresor sound. Rising and rising with tension and just the right amount of theatre, this one asks all the right questions and your dancefloor will guarantee a reaction. 

For a deeper perspective head to Undo’s remix. A foreboding and stern take that nods to the legacy of Black Strobe, this one pulsates with tension as we march into the future. It’s a reminder that things aren’t always about where we’re from… It’s about where we’re heading.

French artist Back From The Wave joins Roam Recordings with two original hypnotic burners. 
The EP starts with Brothers which builds with lush pads and gritty synthwork. Mother’s Mind takes a more reflective approach and continues to build the trance inducing journey of the EP.
The EP is backed by remixes from French compatriot Endrik Schroeder and Roam alumni Rigopolar. Endrik Schroeder is up first with his dreamy and melodic take on Brothers. Rigopolar rounds out the EP with a laid back version of Mother’s Mind with beautiful vocoder work accentuating the mellow vibes.

Quixotical Records' (@quixoticalrecords) latest release is all about dark disco and heavy deep indie-dance beats. Etane (@etanesounds) joins the Quixotical Family and brings on "Transfix" EP. Comparing the original to the beautifully crafted remix by Aurum Miles, certain changes and improvements are basically evident, you can actually see them, by just listening. In contrast, this remake is very bold and provocative, in the sense it has one special quality that the primary version did not possess - audacity. And this just adds a new flavor to already masterful architecture. It's always interesting to hear a different take on the same track because it keeps the original alive and builds a profound legacy. These alterations always make you go back to the source, and revisit the "one" that spawned them all.

Blindetonation hits double figures with a suitably notable new EP from Aurum Miles. Pardon Moi, Il Est Vilaine and Thomass Jackson all serve up sizzling remixes to complete this interesting package. 

Miles hails from Lithuania and has grown up around shoegaze, rock and British indie, and was later touched by electronic sounds. A keys, drums and guitar player who mixes up all these influences with narcotic weirdness, he has released on this label before and always impresses. 

The excellently elastic ‘Few Feets’ is a sleazy, low slung machine made disco jam with skewed synths, punk hits and dirty bass. Exotic vocals and dark spoken words flesh out the wonky groove and the whole thing is hugely intoxicating. ‘Easy Come Easy Go’ is a menacing number with more filthy bass guitar riffs that snake along an urban sounding landscape. More dehumanised vocals bring an edgy feel and cosmic synths serve to trip you out. Last original ‘Mojo’ completes this brilliant disco freak show with off kilter synths and guttural guitar riffs that add up to dark cosmic excellence. 

First to remix is Berlin Based New Wave Duo Pardon Moi aka James Brook and Thomas Freudenthal. They flip ‘Few Feets’ into a surging track with shooting synths that reach to the skies. It’s a spine tingling cut with plenty of intergalactic energy.  Then come the duo of Il Est Vilaine, who make twisted electronic music and get their machines dancing on labels like Dialect. Their take on ‘Easy Come Easy Go’ is libidinous and dripping with a moody tension. Propped up by rugged bass and coloured with naughty chords, it’s a psyched-out and vital version.  Lastly, label regular and esteemed modern disco man Thomass Jackson works ‘Mojo’ in to a characterfully chugging, flipped out number with scale-riding melodies and percolating bass that takes you on a real trip. 

This is an inventive package of perfectly macho dark disco.
