Este remix es un pequeño homenaje a mi compositor serbio favorito, Vojislav “Voki” Kostic (1931-2010). Me gusta su trabajo, entre otras razones, porque él era el único compositor en nuestra región que compuso piezas folk que inspiraron a los verdaderos musicos folk, no a los de música clásica, jazz o los modernos solamente.
En esta pieza en particular de 1968 se puede escuchar las influencias melódicas, armónicas y rítmicas de Latinoamérica mezcladas con el folklore serbio, cosa que en realidad no es tan sorprendente: la música latina fue muy popular aquí, e incluso promovida por las autoridades en los días de la antigua Yugoslavia socialista, como el presidente Tito que estaba profundamente inmiscuido en el movimiento de países no allineados a el sosialismo, y encontró a esa música como una buena alternativa popular para el el rock `n` roll y que venía del Occidente capitalista. Así fue que me resultó ideal convertir esta pieza olvidada en cumbia liego de casi medio siglo de haber sido compuesta.

This remix is a little hommage to my favourite Serbian composer, Vojislav "Voki" Kostic (1931-2010). I like his work, among other reasons, because he was the only composer in our region that composed the folk-inspired pieces for the real folk musicians, not for the classical, jazz or modern ones only. In this particular piece from 1968 you can hear the melodic, harmonic and rhythmic influences from Latin America blended with Serbian folklore. That is actually not so surprising: Latin music was very popular here and even promoted by the authorities back in the days of old Socialist Yugoslavia, as President Tito was deep into the Non-Alligned Movement and found this music as a good popular alternative for the rock`n`roll and pop coming from the Capitalist West. So it was ideal for me to turn this forgotten piece into cumbia after nearly half a century since it had been composed.

DJ Shotnez, or Ori Kaplan as he was born, is one of the factors why UrbanWorld is here today. You may not know it but back in the early 2000 when Ori lived in NYC he was part of a movement that created the Rubalad alternative parties, he was founding member of the gypsie punk band Gogol Bordello and balkan band J.U.F. which later went on to become Balkan Beat Box.

It was in NYC - highly inspired by the world beats scene which Ori Kaplan was an integrated part of - that UrbanWorld was created. So it is with huge respect that we welcome DJ Shotnez’s debut dance floor EP – Toma Toma. The EP includes 4 original tracks which all have that global bass feeling on the dance floor, plus 4 remixes to top it off just right:

Hoje Festa feat. Throes + the Shine. --- They have an amazing energy - super good and raw – it’s kuduro rock, bred in Angola and fed in Lisbon.  Dub Gabriel, who was also part of that NYC movement, remixed it for this EP and I can't stop listening to his work.

Part Of The Glory feat Balkan Beat Box. --- Remix of my own work in collaboration with Balkan Beat Box with more shuffle and cut up style vocals. And it gets even crazier as one of my favorite butchers Neki Stranac from Shazalakazoo gives it his treatment.

Nighttime feat Bomba Estereo. --- Liliana Saumet has one of THE most amazing vocals of Latin hip hop, electronica and what not, her voice has that deep Caribbean and Pacific vibe and looks into the future.  Who other than the Superpendejos can take on a chica like her?

Orimonika. --- Think American folk meets global bass, influenced greatly by Nortec Collective, with a serious dance floor beat that gets people jumping.  Thornato – representing the new generation in NYC – get to round it up with a trap inspired remix, so heavy you won’t believe it.
