After a brief hiatus we are back with CKFM edition 101 & it is worth the wait. 

A definite kindred spirit to us here at Craigie Knowes, he's been doing it better & longer than most. We met in person for the first time earlier on in the year, ate a large amount of Italian food & chatted about music for a few hours before going to support our friends who were playing at Subculture. An unplanned but very much welcomed first meeting.

Raised on a diet of Soul, Jazz, Hip Hop, Punk and Reggae, turntables were a natural progression for this Bristol born, Welsh rooted DJ and Producer Owain K (Owain Kimber). After discovering the sounds of bootleg mixtapes and Techno as a youngster in the 90s, he's never been one for sitting still.

“I’ve always wanted to create and make things, even when I was a toddler. When all the other kids would play with toys that had been bought or given to them as presents, I was much more into making my own toys. I’d also design castles from cardboard and let my imagination go wild. So, when I discovered electronic music, I wondered how to go about doing it – create such an atmosphere in the track. I really love the ambience of early UK Techno, the atmosphere presented and how it all works together. It’s always a personal journey for me, regardless of what the artist had in mind while producing, you always find your own interpretation: mind music for sure.”

With the “It’s Just A Ride” Album, we finalise a project that has long been in the making. Watching Mihail’s growth and transition - the moment has come to release his intimate music for peace & understanding into this universe.

It was a gloomy and stormy saturday and it immaculately reflected my mental and physical state induced by a busy and chaotic week followed by a monthly residency of my uterus’ attempt to kill me 🥸  still, I do everything in my autistic power to stay in good spirits leading up to the party and drag my record bag across the borough in the storm and show up early to help and support, hoping for the best. 

As some of you may already know, besides accepting few meaningful and somewhat intimate gigs here and there, I took a step back from playing out in 2023 for various reasons I will not get into here :) after being out of the environment for what felt like an eternity my ears and I did not know what to expect regarding the balance between the booth, the system, and the floor. 

As I calibrated the needles the rain started to slow down, I instinctively squeeze in a soundcheck that logistically was not allocated for us from the venue (I found this absurd but I was also not surprised)… we quickly realized one of the internally ground turntable is broken and needed to be replaced - the party was to start at 10:30 and we were already running behind but we stayed positive and with the willingness of the sound engineer to do right by us while being what seemed liked the only engineer on the clock with the hall and zone one having issues of their own… we were able to swiftly find a replacement and address the issue. 

The party gets started and the floor rather quickly fills up to Yalda, a dear friend and the head behind Crewcuts who invited me. The energy on the floor is getting hot and sweaty and we danced in unison to her fun’ky grooves and energetic sound. To my surprise the loft filled up with a lot of familiar and unfamiliar groovers on the floor there to shake what their mama had in fact given them. 

The intimate and cozy space packed with excited energies in combination of things that can all go quickly downhill when records are being played out in a wooden booth being grabbed on to and shaken by the excited groovers on the floor while water is leaking post storm down the wall of the booth  having us  delicately place our records to keep them dry all can come with the territory and it can become quite stressful but it can also be fun and exciting with the right crew. And this night was just that - a sublime way to come back into the beautiful disorder that has so much moving parts that are gearing away at all times behind the curtains to come together in a controlled chaos that can crumble at any given moment. 

Yalda's support and love with the energy of the space made me feel safe to do my thang , i took off my sneakers and got situated as i queued in my first record. it took a couple transitions for me to get settled in a club setting after being away for some time - the energy on the floor was raw and excited with people cheering and grabbing and bumping in a packed room - i did my best to lock in and respond to their call.  

I was little hesitant on sharing as i felt like i wasn’t locked in as much as i hoped but i was reminded once again thanks to the groovers and my cores to let go of being so highly critical of myself through the lenses of my autistic brain. As someone who loves the human element that comes with the territory of creating , taking risks ,whether making music or playing records often times in places that is not your ideal setup - i reckon it will only get better as i come back out from hermit mode and play out more once again in the different booths and environments. 

so here is the live recording of the set from the party by yours truly and i hope you enjoy as i did and that it can simulate the time and space of the wonderous crewcuts party held at the elsewhere loft  :)

At our latest stage hosting for Drift we invited Islas for the closing slot. She blew us away with a floor-oriented set crossing genres on the move.

Islas' roots were in the visual art. As she grew, the curiousness to sound grew with her. Starting with sets bringing together ambient, ASMR and spoken word; currently reviving dance floors with energetic and highly percussive gems. As artistic busy bee, Ailsa co-founded the PLANET collective and helped in founding belgian dance label Basic Moves. As person, a down to earth girl whose determination immediately sparkes interests.
