For our next Nightime Drama podcast we welcome Brian James from Malta. Recently releasing on XDB's label Metrolux and local label Batti Batti, Brian is a DJ that has helped shape the underground scene of Malta importing artists such as Donato Dozzy, Abdulla Rashim and Milton Bradley to Malta's shores. 

Brian James, expresses his inner self through music and remains faithful to his dark and deep roots, managing to create a perfect equilibrium of form and sound. Throughout a night; walls, floors and ceilings vibrate from a euphoric dancing crowd, whilst sound waves serve as the perfect medium for a holistic Dj- crowd experience.

1) Are you an early bird or a night owl? 

During the week yes I am, however I like dark sounds so that makes night an ideal environment for me. The mystic of a night at a club with music that can inspire the inner feelings is something that i look for.

2) What is your home city and what makes it special?

I live in Malta and our history is very rich due to the fact that it has been conquered by different civilisations. We also have really good cuisine, lot of restaurants to go with different concepts. Sun shines most of the year with many beaches to choose from.

3) The term DJ's DJ gets thrown around a lot these days, who is your DJ's DJ? 

XDB, Owen Jay, Donato Dozzy, Neel Rome just to mention a few 

4) What first comes to mind when you think of electronic music in Australia?

I don’t know much since i haven’t been at that side of the planet yet however i hear very good things about it. I had the pleasure to meet Trinity and Dave Stuart with their great music .

Since forming Nightime Drama in 2012, Shaun Franklin aka Trebek and Peter Fincher aka Peter Finger have upheld their long standing vision for the label of releasing quality underground music from artists locally and around the globe.
Their DJ sets are diverse, deep and winding - they epitomise what it means to tell a story.
The duo have hosted events around the city, which always bring together artists, lighting enthusiasts and lovers of soulful underground music. Some of the finest names they've hosted include Steffi, XDB, Patrice Scott, Lowtec and Eli Verveine. More recently, Nightime Drama hosted their launch party in Sydney, spreading their passion for forward thinking music.
The first Nightime Drama EP in 2013 "Design Principles" by Melbourne producer Infinite Loops drew world-wide acclaim and was featured on many DJ charts. Sydney based Techno veteran Trinity has now joined the Nightime Drama family.

Nick Muir has always been a big fave here at C-U is best known for his work as a producer of electronic dance music both on his own and as one half of the Bedrock production team with John Digweed.

John Digweed and Nick Muir's partnership has been one of electronic music's most fruitful pairings. Between them, they've creating a body of work that’s seen them become one of the world’s most highly regarded production duos.

Together, they've been involved in many pivotal moments in the world of club music with their music even helping to define some genres.

Classic tracks like 'For What You Dream Of' and 'Heaven Scent' under Digweed and Muir's Bedrock monkier, plus Nick's own 'Stoneage' as Floorjam are widely regarded as classics, which are still played all over the world today.

Muir's music has been used extensively in film and both he and John have written scores for, amongst others, 'Stark Raving Mad' (Newmarket films) and 'Spiderman - the animated series' which won a Dancestar award for Best Use of Music in a TV Show.

'For What You Dream Of' was famously used in the club scene of the phenomenally successful era defining film, 'Trainspotting'.

 1) Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Definitely a night owl, never been a morning person. when I started working office jobs I simply fell asleep behind my desk for several years and jobs in the morning, as I felt inspiration mostly came around bedtime. Now I kinda switched to making music mostly in the afternoon though.

2) What is your home city and what makes it special? 

I'm originally from Groningen, a city in the north of Holland, but Amsterdam has been my home for exactly 10 years now. There's a lot that makes Amsterdam special, but one of the things I specifically like is that it's a city that has pretty much everything I'm looking for in a city but I still run into people I know when I'm walking through it. An American friend of mine who used to live here always refers to Amsterdam as 'the biggest village in the world' and she has a point. That being said, I'm quite happy to have moved to one of the less busy places outside of the center, after having lived for 7 years right next to the center.

3) The term DJ's DJ gets thrown around a lot these days, who is your DJ's DJ?

I have a lot of favourite dj's and if you ask me the same question again next week I'll probably give a different answer, but Karl Meier and Patrick Russel to me are definitely two typical "DJ's DJ's" who keep surprising and amazing me with both skills and selection. Also DVS1, whenever I see or hear him play I feel I might as well give up as there's no way I'll ever in this life get to that level. 

4) What first comes to mind when you think of electronic music in Australia?

 First thing that pops up in my mind is Rainbow Serpent festival, couple friends played there a couple of times. And a sign at the festival somebody posted online, warning not to wonder off in any case one of the multitude of deadly animals will definitely kill you in the Australian desert. I also heard some great stories of friends who toured through the east coast, and I'm very eager to find out myself.

5) What has been the stand out track that you've playing this month?

Current standout track is Dold - EVA. a simple amen break over a 4/4 beat with some beautiful pads on top. the type of track you can hear and think 'why didn't I think of that'. right in the feels.

Nenad's introduction to electronic music was through various 80's synth pop bands and movie scores, and he began listening to dance music (most forms) in the early 90's. He got into dj’ing in 93/94, and played at private parties and at Techno nights such as Wind Up and Robotic, along side dj’s Bold, Jorge Watts and HMC. 
Having studied the organ as a child, he soon got a taste for production so signed up for the Audio Engineering program at SAE, and the Music Production extension. For some time Nenad stepped away from Dj'ing, and started to explore the world of synthesis, sequencing, compression and EQ, and started recording. 

In recent years, Nenad has played  a number of guest slots including Techno Union @ Dragonfly, Freaks Come Out and Plastik @ Cuckoo, and together with T.E.A., co-hosted LUCY (stroboscopic artefacts) along with HMC. Nenad also played his first ever set of original productions at Electric Circus for Futurist. Nenad is also a part-time promoter, and under the name Delirium Electric held a techno night called Synthetic, and co-promoted the Haus-Boat parties with Deetron and HMC, and Derrick May at Electric Circus.
