Nicolas Barnes is back on the Mood Series! The Latvian producer has been very busy since we last seen him on Greyscale. With over a dozen releases just in the past year, his output has not dipped in quality one bit. His 3rd time on Greyscale in total, the latest is called 'Black Gem' which kicks the EP off in fine fashion. The balance of deep techno, dub techno and polished tech house makes this an overall ideal late night club track for anyone. Futuristic vibes at an up-tempo speed makes this a flighty tech winner. 'Melodic Memories' is a deeper groove adding a great balance already to the EP. This one has prime-time vibes of big sounding chord driven dub techno. The atmosphere and break are so understated and clean. No cheesy hands up moment here. This is techno! Wicked track. Things just continue from there as 'Hearts Afloat' is a slick track that creates a wonderful symmetry of a heavy groove and an addicting and heady airspace. Pure vibes here. Techy dreams that scream classic. 'Submerged Grooves' is not for the faint of heart. Cavernous pulsing soundwaves of pure techno goodness. This is nothing short of a monster. A perfect example of how to ramp up an EP to an amazing crescendo. Nicolas Barnes is on fire here. This is the kind of release you show to someone when they want to experience the power of techno. Black Gem is sure to be standout release in 2023.

The space shuttle was ready and eagerly set to launch. Smoke bubbled beneath the weighty metallic chamber and the concrete was blackened by the radiant heat. Soon the craft would leave planet earth destined for some place far, far away. PSR1170 had been a long time in the making, it was a miracle that the project had evolved this far. Little of them knew what might happen next but they were prepared to enter the darkness, the sky beyond space. 

L.Pearson releases as part of a split EP on the newly formed Cong Burn label. The release draws upon an array of experimental electronics.

Greyscale was launched in 2012 by Lithuanian producer and DJ grad_u, and photographer Rima Prusakova, set up as a platform for material from grad_u and close friends whilst Prusakova’s black and white analogue photography provides the visual identity of the label. 

The original mix of ‘Blavus’ opens the EP, perfectly setting the tone with murky, ethereal atmospherics, billowing dub echoes, modulating percussion and thunderous drums before DubTechno stalwart XDB strips things back a little with soft touches of the originals airy drones 
tucked away in the depths whilst choppy stabs and dynamically unfolding analogue rhythms wander throughout. 

The second original from Ohrwert opens the flip-side, upping the energy levels slightly with hooky stab-sequences, filtered delays and hypnotic melodies running alongside a sturdy percussive foundation. Lastly to round out the release grad_u reworks ‘Blavus’ into a more 
groove-driven workout, employing shuffled hats, looped dub chords and bumpy sub-bass hits throughout.

Artists Sibling and Heavenchord team up to take Greyscale and the dub techno genre to even greater heights. The expansive development of sounds and ideas here are truly epic for the listener. Breathtaking melodies, well-defined bass notes and shape-shifting chords of perfection. The sounds are focused, polished and fluctuate throughout the programs in different and unique ways. Volumes dim and flicker while others subliminally and organically carry messages. A great balance of technical creation and mood building runs a theme here. Each song is carefully crafted using the entire spectrum of sound and it becomes easy to get lost in any particular one. For those that think dub techno can be too formulaic and too predictable, we encourage but in fact, we urge them to play this album so they can hear the possibilities pushed forward by these artists with a clear vision and fresh perspectives. An album that is full of depth and arguably some of the most creative in the genre. A must-have!
