Sound telling a story.

And it begins in a eerie thunder storm, the atmosphere is mellow while the piano is playing subtly in the background throughout. You slowly hear footsteps I recorded of myself walking home through traffic. I later recorded the sound of rain with the purpose of adding realism.

I wanted to set up a rare voice recording of Jean-Michel Basquiat where he says "the city is killing me". This statement I feel adds on to the mellow feeling I actually thought at the time was too melancholy but I decided to keep it anyway. Soon after that you hear doors open, locking, then closing as well as TVs changing channels, TVs turning on and off. I wanted to use these sounds to create a scene in your mind so it feels like you are making those actions.  

I really thought the idea of the "technology of behavior" was thought provoking. I can see how the misuse and belief in technology is a problem no one really admits we collectively have. It really cannot solve pressing issues such as racism, prejudice, employment discrimination and hate crime. I began to think deeper about how I felt about those issues and what human behavior has to do with it. I feel quite plainly about it, humanity lacks compassion. Our compassion seems to end at our family and friends. It seems that very few people genuinely care about people these days and don't see why they should. They don't care about you unless it is in their interest right? Or if you have some history with them. Yet, this notion is the problem. Most people never think twice about how we interact with each other. And that's if we interact at all. I wouldn't consider a cordial greeting worthy in this regard either but the question is how much respect do you really need to have for someone you don't know to genuinely care about them? 

In view of that, I ask to say I feel that if we started to respect each other with a little more compassion, our human experience would be much more pleasant. I know if we care more about our behavior and actions toward each other this would change society in a positive sense. Sadly, my generation has been tricked into thinking it's "cool" not to care anymore. We have to break that lock on our minds and hearts,

To get back to the music, I wanted the drums to lift our spirits a little higher. I created like 6 or 7 patterns that I wanted to flow in transition with each other while the beats are building and changing. There's features from legends such as Maya Angelou, ‪Whitney Houston‬, ‪Marvin Gaye‬, ‪Fela Kuti‬ and the magnetic Malcom X who are all very necessary. I needed all of them to stir the mind, restore, cure, heal, and empower the spirit while the music takes over your soul.
