The ghost ship emerged from the fog bank with an unnerving silence, gliding atop the waves despite its tattered mainsails lying slackened and unfilled by the utter lack of wind. Atop its deck shimmered brief silhouettes enshrouded in mist, marked only momentarily by the silvery light of the moon. The vessel’s movement was slow and looked as though it had been scuttled, yet it cut through the waters with a purposeful heading rather than an aimless drift. Somewhere, something unseen guided the craft, captained by a mind with no body, a ship sailing under the flag of no nation.

Though dilapidated and beset by barnacles on all sides with its hull pockmarked by cannonfire, the ship sailed onwards, led by the ornamented and iron wrought ram that marked its prow. Rusted and worn down in the course of countless engagements, the great ram still cleaved through the seas with ease, the evidence of its many conquests now etched into its very form. It was this singular feature that had given the ship its name, a moniker whispered by living sailors in hushed tones for fear of invoking the ghost ship's terrible ire. The HULLBREAKER sailed for but one remaining purpose - to drag other ships beneath the waves to where the bodies of its original crew still lay.

AL/SO makes his EATBRAIN debut with HULLBREAKER, a four-track EP that further features Transforma & Tengu and sees the Dutch artist sail to the fore of the EATBRAIN horde to captain the latest release under the label’s unmistakable banner.

Centuries had passed since the initial arrival of the extraterrestrial sonic emitter on the planet’s surface, and the culture of the beings who inhabited that world had evolved much since the initial encounter. They now composed great musical works of their own, and over time, the alien device had come to lie forgotten, buried beneath the dense jungle floor and still festooned by the decorative textiles that its original inheritors had attached to celebrate its wondrous powers. Here it lay for ages until, in searching for the origins of their ancestors, a group of explorers discovered the idol of the bass cult once more.

The discovery was at first one of bemusement - an obvious hoax played by a rival expedition, perhaps. For so fine a speaker to be discovered so far from modern civilization was an absurd concept. Yet there was something about the craftsmanship, an intricate, spiraling pattern etched into its enclosure that was mirrored in the artworks of the ancient peoples of these lands. Their ancestors could not have crafted such a device, so where then could it have come from? As the leader of the expedition lifted it from the soil, the device rang out with a sonorous & soothing hum, enrapturing all those who stood gathered before their new discovery as it rattled their bodies with low-frequency sound. Thus it was that THE CULT OF BASS was born anew, and the alien artifact’s powers were resurgent once again

If you've been feeling the Erb N Dub and Skope combo that's been providing us with a masterful series of technically precocious dancefloor killers, then don't worry. This is the same superhero team-up, it's just that Skope has given himself a new alter-ego, Malux, specifically designed to push this brand of rave-wrecking heaviness onward. So, after this fresh lick of paint to the war-machine, it seems it's time for the shelling to recommence. In fact, you've probably already clocked the almighty remix of TC's “Next Hype” that they and Crissy Criss cooked up which has been shutting down raves and festivals everywhere this summer.

“Dubplate Killer” sees Erb N Dub and Malux recruit Tony Anthem and Navigator to the cause. The team waste no time in demanding our attention with straight up gangsta orchestral stabs. The signal is clear: this is going to be big. And it is. Manic drums provide the artillery, supporting the downright illegal chemical attack from switching and rearranging basslines. This is all about the complex rhythmic interplay between bass and drum, something which has become a trademark of these producers. When the dancefloor needs a wake-up call, here's one to draw for.

The original version of “Drummer” has already proven its credentials as a heavyweight party-hyping monster. This VIP version takes the elements and pushes them quite a few notches more filthy. The unpredictable pitch-warping bass, vying for the spotlight with the frankly insane drum programming makes the drop a screwface moment for ravers and a “WTF?” moment for production geeks. The dance can't possibly be ready for this, it's going to have to be wheeled-up to be believed.

Apparently the artist formerly known as Skope is reserving his old title for more experimental music. This release proves, however, that even as Malux he's not settling for plain normality. Erb N Dub and Malux are making dancefloor D&B, but that definition hasn't confined them, it's just shown which boundaries to push.

Sometimes you just have to look at the artist names to know a release is going to be something special. North Base have just nailed one huge collaboration, “Third Eye”, with Turno and Harry Shotta, and now they've arrived on Technique for another. And, when their powers combine with the ultra-technical musicality of Erb N Dub, the results are bound to be explosive.

“Punk Rock” goes straight in with the drama. A layer of distorted rhythm guitar keeps the beat, while huge chords and reverberating percussive strikes build the tension. The dark tinge of wailing guitar and pads in the high end ramp the anticipation even further. Then unashamedly aggressive vocal samples take us to a drop that we already know is going to be carnage.

The rough-hewn grind of the guitars in the intro is transferred to the bass, a serrated edge of fluctuating textures that warps and modulates under neck-snapping beats. Then there are those drum fills every sixteen bars that ramp the energy up to to a brand new level. And don't miss the subtlety in the little sparking delayed and reverbing effects that ride over the top to give that extra push onwards. This is going to hit dancefloors hard.

We don't often see guitar-led music mesh with DnB, but North Base and Erb N Dub have demonstrated just how it should be done. Here, the uncompromising savagery of punk meets precision engineering, and these producers prove, once again, that they're at the top of their game.

French drum & bass producer The Clamps has become more and more of an identifiable force, with his forthcoming EP on veteran Prolix’s Trendkill Records quickening his pace to the top echelons. The Clamps production has often been an enviable trait, something which the artist has been refining over the past few years; this hasn’t gone unnoticed by the heaviest hitters within drum & bass, which is why he came under the radar of Prolix. And The Clamps fits well within Prolix’s growing arsenal of producers, something which the head honcho has also spent years refining. When it comes to the genre’s darker sounds, Trendkill is a go-to imprint, dominating both charts and DJ sets during its expansion. With a host of main-stay labels already ticked off by Prolix himself, it made sense for him to build a musical hub which highlighted the sounds influencing his own output.

Since the late 90s, The Clamps has spent his time pouring over the intricacies of everything from hard techno to drum & bass. After initially making a name for himself on homegrown label Kosen Production, he’s become more and more of a pivotal figure throughout the wider music circuit. Now having released on imprints such as Invisible, Titan, Eatbrain and Impact Music, his forthcoming ‘I Feel’ EP is a return to form, following the explosion of his ‘The Odyssey’ LP in 2018.

First track ‘No Reality’ creates an intro which is instantly encapsulating with its steppy instrumentals and patches of waif-like samples. Once it drops, through its pounding drum stabs, you’re taken directly into the belly of the best. Title-track ‘I Feel’ is just as chaotic, tearing through with robotic vocal interludes. ‘Mind Exploration’ runs through next, with an old-school reminiscing as you’re yet again released against its manic mechanics. ‘Interaction’ is the final track, foreboding as it begins to wheel you towards its first climatic breakdown. Each punching horn takes you in deeper before its sci-fi atmospherics leave you to its driving ferociousness.

Trendkill Records are back, with help from The Clamps - proving that the next year is titled to be one of their biggest yet.
