Denver-based producer A Hundred Drums demonstrates her wide array of instrumental talents and genre diversity on her self-titled album, available this Valentine’s Day on Gravitas Recordings. Sitting comfortably at seven tracks, this album is Gabrielle Watson’s most ambitious project to date.

Detouring from the deep dubstep sounds that first made a splash in the scene, Watson uses A Hundred Drums to create her own sound and break away from familiarity by showcasing her vast musical influences.

The Valentine’s Day release date and self-titled album is a symbol of what A Hundred Drums intends to accomplish: “A Hundred” was chosen for its spiritual and societal primacy, and "Drums" call our hearts to beat in sync. A Hundred Drums aspires to align all listeners' heartbeats to her BPM, unifying us all in the music. We beat with one collective heart on the day celebrating love.

A tribute to her passion project, “Shakti Sound” sets listeners on a globetrotting journey into mysterious and minimalistic 808s. A Hundred Drums puts a spotlight on her signature hand drums in "Circles," which blend in an abstract, downtempo experimental soundscape before James Xavier sings of a wicked flame. Dashing down the dark road, A Hundred Drums tells the haunted tale of the “Boogie Man,” slicing through inky blackness with an eerie bassline and haunting whispers.

“Psy.Area” incorporates cascading psytrance as liquid bass is gradually dripped onto the track. Featuring A Hundred Drums’s first official collaboration with fellow Denver artist, Templo, “Apex” rides the wave through a cave of deep dub and metallic beats. Vibe Emissions “Circles” back to offer an energizing remix of the aforementioned song, incorporating various deep dubstep rhythms and textures. Legendary producer Leon Switch remixes “Lord of Tings,” released originally by Heavy Traffic Recordings and featuring Jayne Gray, into a seductive stupor, closing out A Hundred Drums's self-titled album in a state of bliss.

This mix was inspired by my dad <3 he has been my biggest fan since day one, he actually thought of the name G-Space for me, when i didnt even know what to call myself lmfao <3 he said with a peace sign, " "G-Space" because it's always been about the Grateful Dead drums & space. And the G stands for Grady & Grateful Dead etc." and i said word and rolled with it ever since. much love! also, this mix is inspired by some recent advice he gave me, "play an old school g-space song, into a new song, into a collab/friend's song". I'm so excited to share this new song with all of you. I wrote this one up in the Wild Basin of Rocky Mountain National Park. In fact you can see the exact view I had from the studio window in this picture. After initializing this song, several good friends came up that night and added some delicious elements. You can hear my lovely girlfriend Michele reciting poetry by the raging fire. My dear friends Derek Guarascio and Eric Warner, without whom the album would not be possible, laid down percussion, vocal vibrations, and rolling ayahuasca beads. We all stayed up all night and celebrated the deep resonance of the mountain. I hope the joy of this experience is captured in the music. So please, enjoy my newest addition to The Space Between.... A podcast for a positive future! To host fun conversations to illuminate the path out of this oppressive leviathan, towards an ideal society.

Terence McKenna once said, "If we continue going where we're headed, we'll end up living in a toxic waste dump ruled over by Nazis." 30 years later, we are still driving down that same road. How do we escape this fate? Is there another path? 

If we are going to escape our default dystopian trajectory, we need a map. Reactionary forces in our society are afraid of the unknowable future, so they vociferously grasp towards an unrecoverable romanticized past, for lack of an alternative vision. The status quo has become untenable, so something has to give. We forward-thinkers must get better at articulating the future we want to see, otherwise we will slide back into the worst aspects of historical injustice, and things will get very ugly indeed.

To create a world worth living in, we need help. No one can create the future alone. Whatever the fate of our species will be, it will be a manifestation of our collective will. The people own the future. It does not belong to any elite. But most people don't even bother confronting the future, because they are kept treading water by an economic system that treats them as mere instruments of production. The working class is deliberately distracted from thinking about big picture questions like Does it really have to be this way? What is the good life? How should society be organized? What would we do with our time if money was no object? What does utopia look like from here? and How the fuck do we really accelerate the evolutionary path towards it?

Utopian Cartography will feature artists, activists, intellectuals, & event producers from whom I have gained great insights about the potential of a positive future. When I woke up to the ways of the world years ago, I became overwhelmingly depressed by the apocalypse. I was convinced we were headed straight for the Nazi toxic waste dump Terence warned us about. Then I discovered utopia. My eyes were opened yet further, and I learned that the revelations of our as yet unrealized liberation had a purpose. I came to appreciate the fact that "change only occurs when the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of changing." Apocalypse is a necessary precursor to utopia. We can only see the garden beyond the veil by first confronting the ills of the status quo. Utopia is out there, if only we know how and where to look.

So if you want to shed some of that existential despair and pessimism about the possibility of a good future for humanity and our planet, give this show a listen. We will do our best to illustrate the rational case for optimism about the future, with a philosophically & historically informed evolutionary perspective, streetwise cynicism, and a healthy dose of psychedelic trickster irreverence. 

To be hopeless is to disregard history. The future can be better than any of us imagine, so let's figure out how to get there.
