Creep

Another blast from the past; I started this project back in 2012 and rushed to create a somewhat finished product to use as part of a visual arts project. I'm giving it the chance it deserves to become an actual track. This is part one of two, the second being a house track. I'm not too sure on the title of the track though; it feels less like a void and more like love or longing or something. But at the same time, the name of the track has kinda stuck in my head... 

EDIT: I found a new name! Orbit suits the track very well.

Orbit

A story about a girl with very protective parents who go away for the weekend. The girls sees an opportunity for freedom. She goes out on Saturday night and ends up getting loose to this track with this dude in the club... that was one hell of a night.

I made this track over the course of two days for the Detroit X competition over at Battle of the Bits. I'm really proud of myself for making this track, and I think that entering more time-restricted competitions on BotB will help me break free from my procrastinative and perfectionistic habits. Cyberpilot

I've been meaning to do a Binärpilot remix for a while now, and I've played around with a few ideas in the past, including a mashup of I Quiet Machine with Dramaphone (by Caravan Palace). That project was lost in the hard drive crash (but it's still on Tumblr), and so I thought I'd try to do something else with that idea. After working casually on the IQM parts of the song for a while, I figured the next logical step was to throw in a bit of the legendary Tokyomatrix 3000, which I've pretty much always wanted to try to remix.

I'm really proud of the result, and I hope you enjoy dancing to this track as much as I do. Much love to Binärpilot, who inspired me to make music.

Matrix Machine (Binärpilot Mashup)

I got this idea stuck in my head at midnight one night and spent the next 4 hours working on it because I couldn’t let it slip away. What’s in the pot:

 - I’m Out by Ciara ft. Nicki Minaj
 - Schadenfreude by The M Machine
 - Schadenfreude (Tantrum Desire Remix) by The M Machine
 - Under the Waves by Pendulum

This is the second remix I've made of I'm Out by Ciara (I have yet to post the first), but I thought I should note that it's not because I particularly enjoyed the original. I actually really disliked the music in comparison to the lyrics; while the song is all about owning yourself and having a party after ditching your ex-boyfriend, the dark atmosphere provided by the default minimal club-style trap/hip-hop didn't really have me convinced to "celebrate the break up." My idea was to just make the song feel more exciting and uplifting, and I found that the chord progression from Schadenfreude by The M Machine fits quite well both musically and thematically (Schadenfreude is a German word meaning "pleasure derived from the misfortune of others.")

I'm Out Under The Schade

Five Light-Years is my space-themed debut album. The title is a reference to the time that I've spent making music, as well as an interesting concept I heard from a friend.

If you could travel faster than the speed of light, to be able to watch something that happened five years ago, you'd just need travel five light-years away and pull out your telescope, because the light emitted from Earth five years ago will only just be arriving at that location.

Metal Crusher (XOPHIA Remix)

It's no secret that I'm a massive fan of The M Machine. I started making this chill cover of their epic track 'Luma' after it came out back in 2013. I lost the project file in 2014 but thankfully I'd uploaded a demo to SoundCloud to work from. The drum fill was inspired by Röyksopp's song 'In Space,' and I think that's very representative of my music (both the process of taking inspiration and the association with space).

Luma (The M Machine Cover)

I absolutely loved this track; it's most definitely my favourite song from the game. This was probably the first one I tried to remake... but I ended up doing it too well, and was kind of proud but quite worried because why listen to a near-perfect recreation of a song when you could just listen to the original? A while later I was playing around with some synths and applied them to the themes of Another Medium; it sounded a lot more like how I wanted it to, and it felt a lot more original.

I also decided I wanted to include elements of some other songs that use the same arpeggio-theme; Waterfall (which seems kinda unrelated for the most part) and CORE (which is 100% definitely a remix of Another Medium). I really love what I've come up with here, and I hope to make more music that sounds like this in the future.

This track is almost a year old now! I entered an older version of it into BotB's Decadent Decade competition, and also reworked it for the Beforus Album (a collaborative visual art/music project inspired by Homestuck). Many thanks to Squid for the art; it's excellent and it fits really well with the intentions of the song!

THE BACKSTORY

BotB text: 
A rework of Baron Knoxburry's award-winning Summer Chip I entry, "grrrarrr." Lyrics were written with inspiration taken from maxvdub's OHB entry "After The Revolution" (and Dark Souls).

Beforus Album text:
When considering what sort of song to make for the album, I realised how well the lyrics [from my BotB entry] seemed to resonate with the story of Damara Megido, and adapted them accordingly. I also created an introductory segment (based on the pre-chorus and chorus of the song) intended to depict a sort of inner turmoil as one enters a dark period of their life and is confronted with various emotions including despair, horror, and hatred.

The name of the song refers to the concept of predetermination and fate. Damara's wiki page notes that she holds "much fatalism and frustration" within herself... Note that although the lyrics are mostly directed towards Damara, the second and third stanzas of the second verse refer to the Handmaiden and her service to Lord English.

Calavera played a wicked set at the open mic at Square Sounds Melbourne 2016! This was one of the tracks from his EP 'Journeys' that I remembered hearing at the show. About Us (Calavera Cover)

I made this track for an OHB in July. I had to catch a bus just after it started, so I made the track on the bus and submitted it 10 minutes late after I got to my destination. I couldn't really think of a title at the time; the theme was Late Night so I was linking that to daydreaming and catching busses and idle thoughts.

It's almost the end of October, and I was thinking about this song again, so I decided to fix it up a little and share it.

Better Late Than Never (Instrumental)

It's been a while, hey.

I wrote the lyrics for this track about a year ago, just after releasing the instrumental. It's a song about myself; how I felt about myself and how I was coping with what I now know is depression and anxiety.

I'm doing a bit better now.

I chose to cover 'Step Up' because I had a few interesting ideas for it; it took me a few goes to get down something that I felt good about. Kind of got stuck on what to do about halfway through the track and then realised 'Leaving Home' would make for a good twist. Kinda cathartic to just yell about shit in your room hey; never thought I'd ever do it but *shrugs*

Square Sounds Melbourne 2018 was lit. Calavera performed his new album Kinstugi and it's got all of the sounds I wanna make on a Gameboy... if I ever end up tracking with LSDJ. Having listened to the album on repeat in the months afterwards, I found myself craving one thing: speed. So I played around with the melodies at 130+ bpm, created a few demos, and then let it sit for about 2 years. COVID depression has pushed me to do many things to keep sane, and finishing this off this is one of them.

I had two different ideas for this, went with the second one, and didn't really like how it turned out. This version has undergone an additional ~2 hours of tweaking to make it "listenable."

A Real DJ?

I made the lyrics using a text-to-speech program called "Say," and then I used those samples (only the word "sleepless" and the phrase "the only thing I want is the last thing I need") to create every other instrument by selecting a tiny portion of the waveform and looping it.

So, Streets Magnum have released two new limited edition ice creams, Pink and Black. I'm sure you've heard of them. But they're got this website with some weird game on it? But when you play the game, it plays one of two songs, depending or what side you go on. I really liked the Pink one, but I wouldn't find out who had made the tracks or where I could go and listen to them.

I downloaded the audio .swf (flash files) from the site and when extracted there were 180 or so 1-beat .mp3 files and some sound effects. None of it was in order, so I had to manually piece each section together like a jigsaw puzzle. Then I just put in some filters. NBD.
