Hamadi Hassani aka DJ TRAVELLA is a Tanzanian cyber-singeli DJ from Dar Es Salaam. Since signing to Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Tapes collective in 2022, he has shocked and awed festival and nightclub audiences across Africa, Europe and Oceania with his blisteringly futuristic DJ sets and anything goes sense of humour. Last year, we had the absolute honour of hosting him for a series of electric debut performances across Aotearoa and Australia.

For his contribution to our mix series, DJ TRAVELLA collapses the distance between genres, countries and cultures. Using jacked-up Taarab rhythms and 200-300 bpm warpspeed singeli tempos as a connective thread, he explores his love of global club music in all its hyper-regional forms. Adorned by elastic, rubbery melodies, tip-of-your-tongue sample choices and explosive percussion, DJ TRAVELLA’s HI-FI SCI-FI mix captures the D.I.Y afrofuturist energy that has won him glowing accolades from the  arch-experimentalist Arca and the meme theorist and music technology democratisation advocate La Meme Young.
