Phortah shares again his unique, rich and emotive sound, this time on Earthly Measures. Sadaken exhibits further refinement of his familiar melancholic tonality blended with subtle, textural atmospheric elements. These five tracks are pulsing grooves that get heads bopping and hips writhing, in a very unique & intimate way.

Phortah’s vocal improvisations are being cultivated and appears across Sadaken. Phortah says of its effects "it creates that not-quite-human sound which connects with where I feel a lot of us are at: super digitised organisms, yearning for a way back to our earthly nature”.

That image captures Phortah’s sound and journey well: a repressed, visceral, animal nature reemerging to reclaim its place in an increasingly abstract, digital, binary, landscape.

American born and raised, Matthew Mansfield wanted to learn more about the origins of traditional latin music genres Champeta, Cumbia and Chicha (also known as Peruvian Cumbia), it was during this research that the music of his Piper Street Sound moniker emerged. There’s a great synergy between reggae and traditional latin music, both of whose protagonists travelled from African via the Caribbean. Mansfield has forged a reputation as an innovative producer in the nu-cumbia and dub-reggae worlds, what Matt refers to as ‘transnational’ music. It’s a quaint yet apt description and indicative of the increasingly borderless movement of musical culture.

Argentinian label ZZK Records has had a significant influence on my musical tastes over the past decade so when I found out that Matthew Mansfield who runs the label was a producer and musician in his own right I was interested to hear more. Working under his Piper Street Sound moniker Matt is a dub reggae specialist, but his music is multi cultural and traverses the sounds of Latin America as much as the Caribbean and his home lands in the Southern states. 

For his Métron Musik Mixtape, Matt focuses on his own works, with original tracks, edits and remixes from the Piper Street Sound and DubConscious discography with a very deliberate focus on his Latin influences. His blend of organic sounds and traditional instrumentation with glitched synth works make for compelling listening.

Spanish Afro Latin House producer Kiko Navarro returns to Wonderwheel for the second single from his upcoming album 'Afroterraneo'. "Ihabogi Rawaly" drops the tempo and brings in a thick groove with an 80's bassline, a slowed 4/4 beat, syncopated percussion, and synth stabs. Soaring, soulful vocals on the track come from Guinean singer Aboubacar Sylla, extolling the virtues of how grateful we should be for the earth and to enjoy and protect what we all have and share as humans. Italian production duo Randomized Coffee come through with a Afrohouse re-working complete with West African guitar licks and heavy live percussion turning the track into an Carving out an enviable reputation across the globe for his distinctive and highly personal brand of House music, Kiko Navarro’s voyage of sonic discovery has been going strong for almost three decades now. Born in Mallorca, Kiko’s sound reflects the sun-drenched, slow living atmosphere of the Balearic island he still calls home. Obsessed from an early age with the more soulful side of US House music, Navarro’s DJ skills soon attracted the attention of nightlife behemoth Pacha who offered him club residencies both in Palma and in Ibiza. Next came a monthly gig at Space Ibiza and the rest, as they say, is history.
