My label Stockholm LTD turned 15 recently, so I decided it was time for a little celebration. I'm happy and grateful for the past, and I can’t wait to see what will happen next. Here's how it all started:

Södermalm, Stockholm 1999. The capacity of the store was probably less than 20. The cold and industrial-tinged interior featured ash grey walls, rust-free steel accents, and a magnificently elevated cashier desk. The ceiling was an impressive 3.5 meters with two massive speakers hanging above the cashier. Shelves and bins stocked with vinyl, tapes, and magazines covered the walls. In the storefront, you would find the listening stations with turntables that sit nicely inside their desks. While you listened to the week’s new releases, you’d be treated to a view of the blooming streets of Södermalm as people rushed by. There was a small sign with operating hours in the window which also said “TECHNO / ELECTRO. Welcome to Illegal Stockholm!”

Illegal Stockholm was founded by Tobias Von Hofsten and myself in late 1998. It became our home, blood, sweat, and tears for a good 4-5 years. I was only 18 years old at the time and still in school when we opened its doors. I couldn’t think of anything cooler or more fun than hanging out, talking and listening to music all day and night. After we closed the shop at night. We would hang in the ‘office’ which was the store’s back room. I forged life life-long friendships and gave birth to the idea of Stockholm LTD. I wanted to show people a slightly different side of our scene. The original idea was to keep the recording artist secret with no names announced on the release, but the idea fell flat as people figured it out the day of our first release. Since then, the concept of the label has changed a few times but the core idea and desire remains the same: releasing timeless electronic music.

Stockholm LTD has stood the test of time, it’s not that many labels that stay current for that long. This is only possible with the help of all the artists I’ve been working with over the years. To say I am extremely grateful is an understatement!

With this in mind, let’s celebrate the label’s 15th anniversary with a 5 part release! 15Y contains remixes by some of my favorite artists at the moment. They have all picked and reworked something from my part of the label’s back catalog. The series will stretch out over a set of 5 vinyl singles with a special anniversary sleeve and a beautiful engraving made by graphic designer Håkan Ullberg

Beequeen is the duo of Freek Kinkelaar and Frans de Waard, and they have just released an album, Winter, on A Colourful Storm. Both have celebrated musical histories in the Dutch DIY and avant-garde – the latter having been involved with countless solo and collaborative projects, including Kapotte Muziek, Korm Plastics and Staalplaat. The former might be better known as Brunnen, a longstanding musical alias whose album, Sometimes My Arms Bend Back (Vrystaete, 2015), urged me to get in touch. This mix features their own productions (including one cover song), gathered from over twenty years of collaborative recording.

Precision Only Slows You Down

Butter Sessions tees up a flawless duo, Naarm (Melbourne) based artists Mousse(Simon Barry) and Trevor(James Vinciguerra) for a split 7" release with a screen-printed sleeve. Both artists add the release to their highly-regarded archives. On the A-Side, Mousse submits Northstar. This is his second contribution to Butter Sessions; a robust follow up to his funky explorations showcased on the Bungalow Classics12". On the flipside, Trevor follows up his 2019Becoming a Bed LP(Alter)with the astute Darron.


As one can expect, Mousse's Northstar is soaked in infectious house sequencing and sci-fi hypnobeat, while laced with dialogue extracted from the 1986 anime film Fist of the Northstar. The B-Side track Darron sees visual artist Trevor jumping from his contribution to the record sleeve into the record itself. The piece emits glitchy electro bound in coarse breaks but with just the right amount of room to breathe. As two punchy aligned compositions, this split release introduces a powerful pairing.

Black Power Ambience was made during a time of great stress for us as Black people. This was around the time of Korey Gaines, Sandra Bland, Philando Castile, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and countless others. The Eric Garner one hit especially hard for me, having gone to school in that area. Eric was someone I had always seen around the way and on the day he was killed I had just arrived back home. I walked past the scene and saw the lights and just figured it was the usual, I didn't know what happened until I got to my friends house up the block. All of this death broadcasted on the internet was a constant stream of trauma and it became heavy fast. It's nothing new to me, the idea that my life could end violently has always been in my mind. I wonder what it's like to not think like that?

So during all this my good friend Dave asked me to perform at one of his shows. At the time I was only rapping so I had to make something that would fit the bill.

This is how Black Power Ambience was born. My feelings are captured in it, and the vocal samples from my ancestors serve as a connection to the things that matter. I hope you enjoy it, I know I still do to this day. It gave me relief and I am thankful to the field for giving me the chance to channel this energy this way. Enjoy

Un travail d'autant plsu émouvant que son partenaire dans le groupe, Tom Relleen est décédé quelques semaines avant la sortie du disque. Une mort trop jeune pour un musicien singulier dont on réécoute méthodiquement tous les enregistrements.
