Steel Blue Air is a story of two persons on a diverging path. United in darkness. We chase our fear. The inevitable betrayal from the one that survived. The guilt of abandoning. The guilt of living. As if it could ever be enough. To continue.

The story takes place in a cold and deserted home many years from now.

Nervous City Nervous Self is a nomadic one man band from Sweden. The debut G-d knows what was aired on national radio across Europe.

With the new release ”Yesteryears (and the gloom)" Nervous City Nervous Self brings forth an introspective song from the past, which fittingly enough also deals with the passing of time. Singer/songwriter David Josephson wrote the song in Berlin (yester)years ago in a sense of loss and confusion following a break-up, and it portrays a bewildered but rather clownlike character adrift in a foreign land. "Climb your mountain, put on your crown. Oh you say it´s all, but – hey! – it looks like none." The song later floated back into the wellspring from where it had appeared, and it was not until the isolation of the pandemic that the song resurfaced in the songwriter’s mind and it was swiflty recorded at home; vocals, guitar - and a big reverb.

Yesteryears (and the Gloom)

Before summer is a song from our youth, when love was as bittersweet as a midsummer’s night. It is a youthful pondering on the conditions of love and life – and how at a young age it all seems to call for an intensity as burning as the summer’s sun. All to the accompaniment of those endless summer nights when we were drinking and dancing our young and worried souls away.

The Early Fears is the debut album of nomadic one-man band Nervous City Nervous Self and it contains a broad collection of songs portraying a journey from youth to adulthood. The artist takes a firm grip by the listener´s ear and leads us through the bliss and gloom of a wandering singer´s delightful doom. We meet the struggle for recognition and the quest for purpose, the delusions of failure and the sense of betrayal, the loneliness and the longing for something unknown, paired with a spiritual thirst and a hunger for home. All elements – or fears – that seem to be the predicaments for this or any kind of life. But also, and hopefully foremost, we get to glimpse at an almost magical sense of wonder, fulfilment, and even joyfulness. And at the end of the day – or album – a thankfulness for being alive arises, along with a flourishing wish to do something worthwile and beautiful out of it. 


Before Summer

Balcony Scene depicts an altogether different take on the classic Shakespeare scene from Romeo and Juliet. Here the object of desire doesn´t materialize itself – it is rather the waiting itself that constitutes that yearn for passion and purpose. ”A quiet night on a balcony” turns into a year that ”passed by like a silent breeze” – and ultimately, with the passing of time; “the slow decay of man”. Balcony Scene also portrays the two protagonists divided in their very own isolated waiting. A waiting where we define ourselves – where we become ourselves. 

In order to get lost again.   

And in the distant summer night a black bird sings its lullaby.

”Go On” is featured on the debut album The Early Fears by Swedish nomadic one-man band Nervous City Nervous Self. In the song a lonely singer persistently sings an encouragement to himself: "Go on!” while a nameless mass chants "go home!". It’s a song that starts with a droning guitar before delving into an expansive and swirling landscape of synthesizers. "Go on" is a song for the lonely travellers through life. For the fighters that get laughed at, and laugh back.

And The Early Fears is just the expression of an artist staying committed to this path, and the search for “G-d knows what” – or Godot, as Mr. Beckett very well might have put it.

Go on

Stories of Our Names is a hymn to the wanderers of the world. People who, like migratory birds, sets off towards the horizon with their names as only luggage. People who – by outer oppression or by inner pressure – are forced out of their homes in order to search for a home, and to fill the void of their names with a story. Maybe Gertrude Stein said it best: “What good are roots if you can ́t take them with you?”

The song presents a youthful aspect of being in love, or not in love, wanting to love, or not wanting it, just wanting to be – young?

Nervous City Nervous Self began as a music- and life project years ago in Berlin, and with the new single Frat Boy Boyfriend it is back to where it almost all began.

Anthem is the third song from Nervous City Nervous Self and as the title suggest it is the artist’s personal little manifesto, and declaration of commitment to this ”one-man show” that seems to be the predicament of our lives. And as someone who was born “a long way from home”, and like a bird of passage, only one promise can be made:

”I ́ll stay here til I go.”

For people who do not choose the possibilities remains - but love and life seem to pass by faster than the subway stops at U8. But there is still room for laughter and joy, in fact whole Berlin is laughing with you, because who are they to blame? We came here to choose our indecisiveness. Hop aboard. The only thing we don’t have is time.

Nervous City Nervous Self began as a nomadic one-man band in Berlin and later evolved into a music collective. The debut album The Early Fears was released in 2023.

The Sun is about the human condition and the ladder of light that is offered to us. The Sun is a song about feeling that one´s heart is pinned to the soil, but looking up and seeing our magnificent "sister-mother" shining her way through the shattering shadows of existence, and while we, her younger brothers, are beneath ourselves on earth we raise up with her ladder of light that is her fingers and we climb up through the darkness of our predicament. And we bow our heads to the king. The king is expected. And we shall be free.

Come Out of the Clay is a joyful cry to mankind. It is a call to all of us who hide behind an armor to protect ourselves from most things that coulde be considered to be part of everyday life. Once this armor of clay has been put on, the step to walk out in the rain and let it wash away seems insurmountable. But if we do, lo and behold, underneath the rubble is a beautiful body and truth be known, there is someone standing right here who is head over heels in love with that very person. 

A small step for mankind, a giant leap for us today: We've come out of the clay!

Nomadic one-man band Nervous City Nervous Self was born and raised in Stockholm, and started off the musical career by declaring: “I shall become Sweden´s Cohen or die!”. As Sweden never has been a country of big declarations, he was met with skepticism. A skepticism that eventually forced the singer into German exile – in Berlin, a city where countless prophets and poets wander the streets, a new sense of kinship arose. And it was there, during a visit at an art exhibition about German expressionism that the embryo of Nervous City Nervous Self was created.
