Piano Theme For Humorous Character

Of the Sonic 3 tracks produced by Michael Jackson and his team, I prefer their versions of all tracks against the prototypes with the exception of Carnival Night Zone. This is kind of a re-imagining of Carnival Night Zone but with a slightly peppier tune that might suit faster level design, so maybe think of this as the track to a Star Light Zone type level with a Carnival Night-inspired color palette.

Balloon Factory Zone

This again plays on the idea I had of a Sonic 06 zone in a 2D-style game but this time it kind of reverses the theme, with a re-imagining of a Death Egg-type level with inspiration from Sonic 06 chord theory, especially the rising chords of Crisis City. So imagine this as Sonic 3 Death Egg with the emotional resonance of Crisis City's soundtrack (although I should mention that the Sonic 3 Death Egg theme is one of my favorites in the game).

Metallic Rotosphere Zone

I made this track in an extremely weird few months of my life where I was influenced heavily by jazz, modern "edgy" breakcore, and video game music, and was kind of leaning on music heavily as an escape from real life events. It's somewhat difficult to look back on the music I made during this period but I hope I got something out of it at least subconsciously because this sounds completely unlike anything I've made and I don't think I'll ever be under the same circumstances where I'd be making stuff similar to this again.

Yes, this is almost certainly inspired by the water tunnel section in the Koopa Cape stage from MK Wii.

I remember being amazed as heck when I finished this and really impressed with myself in kind of a naive way I think a lot of producers feel when they're just starting out, like I'd made some big step in my journey as a musician or something, which might be true. The jazz band type structure and use of the amen break to this extent was completely unprecedented for me and I really felt like I was stretching Auxy to its limits, but in hindsight I don't really know how to feel about this track. I think it stands as "impressive" but I'm not completely convinced about its replay value, but that's a pretty pessimistic way of looking at it and I find myself bopping along to this tune more often than not when I play it.

I find it striking how similar this track's sound design is to the Sonic Games (particularly the bass) even though I was pretty much completely unaware of the "Genesis Sound" when I made this. There are some obvious differences but the bass really stuck out to me as that signature crunchy FM-y Genesis style bass. Spooky coincidence yes, but I guess the proof is in the pudding that the Genesis games are really the proverbial cup of tea for me when it comes to the kind of sound I really like and want to imitate. You might notice that the image is from Sunset Hill which is actually from Advance 2, a GBA cartridge, but I thought it fit the theme a little better and I'm also just as much a sucker for the Advance soundtracks, even though the GBA sound chip isn't quite as iconic as the Genesis for me.
