Our recently launched policy project, UK 2040 Options, offers policymakers the opportunity to think ambitiously together about the future we want to create - and the different pathways government could take to achieve change.

We’re convening experts from across the policy and government landscape to explore how a mission-driven approach could lead a future government to future successes.

Is mission-driven government new?

The biggest net-zero challenge of the next decade is electrification: switching our heating and transport over to running on green electricity. Between them, electricity, heat and transport make up more than half of the UK’s carbon emissions and reducing these will be crucial to tackling climate change.

To do this, we’ll need to make changes to our everyday lives: how we heat our homes, how we use and conserve energy and how we travel to and from where we live. The UK is currently falling badly behind on these changes compared to the US and Europe: how do we speed up the shift? 

We gathered experts from policy, government and industry to explore how a Labour government could accelerate the transition to using green electricity in our homes.

Rebecca works on a variety of projects developing new technologies to enable new forms of human expression, including using machine learning Georgia Ward Dyer, Researcher and Curation Assistant in Nesta’s Futures and Explorations Team. Future Curious - AI and Creativity

Mis-prescribing of antibiotics is leading to a global rise in bacterial which are immune to all known treatments, and the need to act has become more urgent than ever. Yet across the world, use of antibiotics is still rather hit-and miss, leading to multiple rounds of drugs, each potentially creating new resistant strains. The Longitude Prize is leading the fight back - incentivising the development of innovative new approaches to diagnosing and treating infections, so the world can still rely on the effectiveness of antibiotics. Joining Nesta's Nigel Campbell to discuss this are:  Dr Tina Joshi, Lecturer in Molecular Microbiology at the University of Plymouth and an expert in bio-microbial resistance, Caroline Purslow, Programme Manager for the Global Health Team, including the Longitude Prize, at the Challenge Prize Centre. The future of storytelling

We know that what matters most for our health is the food we eat, the air we breathe, the places we work and the homes we live in.
