The always-game-changing INDEX:Records feels like the ideal platform for Gi Gi. Over the last year or so, the Texas-based producer has been slowly cultivating his own style of introspective downtempo. Until August, he’d mainly done so by exploring the sound in mixes and teasing us with tracks on a handful of compilations (insert shameless plug of our label). That changed with the release of Sunchoke on Good Morning Tapes, an 8-track collection of blissful beat-based sounds reminiscent of Tranquilizer-era Terre Thaemlitz.

Lamella Pressed follows in the same rhythm-centric footsteps as his recent tape release. Any fan of early ‘00s downtempo labels like City Centre Offices, Elektrolux and theAgriculture will find so much to love here. The album sounds unlike almost anything else you’ll hear right now though, especially “Sinews (feat. Hysterical Love Project)”. Similar to Gi Gi, Brooklyn and Ike bring their own signature brand of 4AD-inspired soulfulness to the track. It’s got to be one of the collaborations of the year, in our very humble opinion.
