Kimmah

We kick off the month of May with Rotterdam resident Kimmah, she is fascinated by decaying concrete basements and forgotten industrial structures. It is those sort of places she soundtracks with her high-energy DJ sets which mix up raw, dark yet funky electro from all points on the spectrum. She only started when the pandemic hit, but has already made an indelible mark on her local scene in Rotterdam as a resident at FOMO. Her swift rise is a testament to the irresistible grit and sleaze of her selections, the infectious bump and grind of her beats, and the thrilling ghetto textures of her grooves.

Kimmah was born in Utrecht, spent some time studying in Berlin and finally settled in Rotterdam shortly before the pandemic hit. When it kept her away from the dance floor connections she loved so much, she decided to make them for herself. She spent the whole of lockdown locked up and working on some old CDJs and turntables. She came out the other side with a terminator DJ style that never lets up and draws on acid, breaks, ghetto, punk and rap vocals, nasty basslines or hard-hitting rhythm. It is an electrifying style that is always full of surprises.

As a diminutive woman, Kimmah jokes, "I can usually only see the first row of hyped-up dancers and they really make my night. I know the vibe is right when everyone can lose themselves in the energy and the music and feel like they can dance however they want to." Along the way, she likes to tease in some of the more traditional sounds from her Vietnamese heritage alongside the physical sounds of Eastern Europe, Detroit, and of course the Netherlands' own famous West Coast.

It was for a Utrecht radio station in May 2021 that Kimmah made her debut after an invite from the colourful AMPFEMININE collective. Since then, she has played on radio stations all over the Netherlands as well as Greece and the UK, and has DJ at cult Dutch clubs like PIP, BRET, Skatecafe, BIT and EKKO.

She is very much on the cusp of breaking through after some key support along the way and, in recognition of that, is looking to help make the scene as accessible as possible for other women of all colours, sexualities and genders. With Kimmah to look up to, we all have plenty to get excited about.
