For the 27th edition of our DECENNIUM series we bring you this exclusive DJ set from Natural Selection resident @second_storey. 

One of the greatest things about 2020 for us was bringing Second Storey (Alec) into the Natural Selection family. Born and bred in UK, now based in Berlin, Alec has been at the forefront of the underground Electronic Music scene for well over a decade and releasing on mammoth labels such as Frustrated Funk, TRUST and Aus Music is fully testament to that. A professional drummer with a lifelong passion for music and a love of experimenting with new sounds, Alec isn’t constrained by boundaries, which is one of the reasons why he has slotted in perfectly with our musical ethos. His roots in bass-heavy Techno and Electro pulse throughout his tracks, whilst he meticulously cares for the defining quality to his craft; Funk. Alec's tracks regularly feature in sets / mixes from an extensive list of heavyweight artists, most notably in recent times, the legendary Autechre. 

Alec has DJ'd and played live all over the UK and Europe. His debut set for Natural Selection as part of our collaboration with Delsin Records, was sadly postponed due to the pandemic, however we were ecstatic to finally have Alec cement his residency at our live stream at FOLD in August last year, playing alongside Ansome, Sigha and fellow residents Kodah, Voicedrone and SWARMM. Keep your ears to the ground for the new date for our Delsin collaboration in which Alec forms part of one of our most lethal lineups to date.

To have such an esteemed artist with us on the Natural Selection frontline is an absolute honour and we are proud to be able to present to you his exquisitely crafted DECENNIUM mix.

DECENNIUM28 - Craigie Knowes

The 28th edition of our DECENNIUM series comes courtesy of Craigie Knowes founders, Mitch Hunter and Max Spittal.

Hailing from Glasgow and Perth, @craigie-knowes is a record label which has gained a reputation for furious, underground club cuts purpose built for the dance-floor. Since 2015 the label has released a prolific array of music from the likes of Jensen Interceptor, DJ Overdose, Carl Finlow, James Shinra, Cygnus and more. Beyond this they have also released two stellar compilations in support of the charity War Child of which the likes of Legowelt, Luke Vibert, London Modular, etc. have all supported and featured. 
 
Mitch and Max themselves are a renowned DJ duo, who would normally be found gigging around the globe pre-pandemic, spinning a diverse selection of underground electronic music soaked in attitude. Their exclusive, heavy-hitting mix for our DECENNIUM series perfectly showcases the Craigie Knowes sound and was an absolute pleasure to listen to and kept us moving from start to finish.

Translate Mix Series - #32 - jobfit

Based in Berlin Ruin is a writer, vocalist, activist and sex worker. She is passionately independent and is a founding member of the Sex Worker Action Group, Berlin Collective Action e.V and Radiant Love Berlin. 

We were first introduced to her through the release of a new EP in which she collaborated with D.Tiffany and Vani-T on Isla Records. Her contribution to the record allowed for her to reach and interconnect with a new audience, showcasing her own creative perspective toward lyricism, sound and design.

She herself was keen to explore this part of her nature in more detail and emphasises the importance of her and other sex workers amplification and inclusion in the wider music community. The following mixtape she has submitted is conceptual in nature and reflects the following ethos:

"It's not often that I am invited to participate in such a formate with a reach to the music community. I think it is incredibly important that we start to include sex workers in the conversation, not only because of stigma and raising awareness of their struggles but because of the incredible amount of exploitation of sex work aesthetic and vibe within the music industry 'the hustle'. Some think it's sick but existing in capitalism is harmful and violent and this is what I want to express. Do I like my work? no. I don't enjoy existing in capitalism, but furthermore sex workers are not only judged for the way we choose to survive within it but criminalised. And legalisation without decriminalisation is nothing, because it only regulates a very small amount of the community that can register. Being a sex worker becomes your identity, something that I could have never prepared myself for.

I would like to use this mix, What's your nature?, with two themes sewn throughout, almost as a collage. The themes I have chosen to speak about in my writing are pain/stigma & decriminalisation of sex work. The newly released record 'Calling Me' will be featured throughout the mix along with other collaborations, and some tones to accompany my writing."

Back in 2019 Cay Horiuchi (@cay-horiuchi) from Portland brought bass humidifier sounds to Daisychain (#082). Here they are once again, journeying toward a bassutopian haven, for this month's installation of the Daisychain residency on Berlin's Refuge Worldwide 📡🌐🌼 

Cay Horiuchi is a Portland-based DJ and artist from Japan. As a part of UwU Collective, they co-create spaces for QTBIPOC & T/GNC community members to dance in safety. Floating fluidly between two languages, cultures, gender binary, or dance floors, they explore the ideas of belonging and utopia.

Vacationers’ Exotic Mushroom Amaro

As someone who has never been capable of following a strict recipe, I tend to lean into an intuitive process with most food and beverage.  There’s nothing quite as exhilarating as impulsively adding an extra pinch of herbs or spices in the heat of the moment, and this playful take on an Amaro is no exception.  We shall call this a recipe, but it is more-so a suggestion, as the best Amari come from within. Therefore I urge whomever decides to embark on the path of aromatized spirits to follow their heart, soul, and intuition.

Some notes:
I make my mushroom tincture separately, as I tend to think it's best to test the potency before adding to an entire batch of spirit.  If you decide to sub in a different type of mushroom, I doubt it is quite as important.  For a psychotropic mushroom tincture, I recommend soaking mushrooms in everclear for 7 days and assessing the flavor and potency before adding to amaro at your discretion. 

For the other ingredients, remember that DRIED is superior to fresh.  In the past I have made the mistake of thinking fresh herbs would create a better flavor, but the aromatics are better absorbed into spirits when there is no water to create a barrier between the aromatizers and the liquid being aromatized :)

CARAMELIZED SUGAR! What a pain in the ass to make, but the caramelization is transformative when it comes to seasoning a rich and flavorful spirit.  Timing is everything here, so if you over-do it just DUMP it and start over. Everclear or highest proof neutral grain spirit you can get
Granulated sugar

Ingredient suggestions (DRIED DRIED DRIED!):

Citrus:
lemon peel
grapefruit peel
orange peel
rosehips
buddhas hand

Fungi:
magic mushroom
Reishi mushroom
porcini mushroom
shitaake mushroom
lion's mane mushroom 

Bitter/Root:
Pleurisy root
Hydrangea root
Licorice root
Wormwood
Rhodiola
Ashwagandha
Siberian Ginseng
Burdock
Toasted Birch
Gentian Root

Herb:
Yerba Santa
Makrut lime leaves
Cardamom Pods
Mint 
Rosemary
Lemongrass
Fenugreek
Mugwort
Calendula
Bee Balm

Offbeat:
Food-grade wood chips
Smelt
Charcoal
Coffee beans
Prosciutto 
Hemp seeds
..whatever the f*** you want..

Take your chosen mixture of dried ingredients and blend with a mortar and pestle.  Put into a large jar and cover completely with everclear.  Hide in a dark place, preferably a dj booth, and check in 1 month.  Aromatics and flavor should be present. 

Take caramelized sugar shards(dark caramelization is preferred) and heat amaro over medium-low heat in a saucepan until sugar dissolves into spirit.  Immediately remove from heat and keep stirring for a minute or so. After cooling, taste and make an educated decision about the aromatics — leave longer? Add more of something? Remove completely and add a couple completely different things? Brighten with a simple syrup of fresh mint or lemon zest?  The choice is yours! Adjust as needed, maybe age a bit longer, and eventually strain through cheesecloth no less than 3 times and bottle.  The longer it bottle-ages the smoother and more integrated the flavors become.  

Now drink up and be merry!
