One thing about independent record labels is that their scope for picking up talent which doesn’t conform to the mainstream is second to none. And a label which has held this skill from the beginning is Kosen Production, the Toulouse based imprint which prides itself on bringing forward the best of drum & bass from its furthest corners. After already giving a platform to the likes of Signs, The Clamps and Nickbee, to name a few high-ranking producers who’ve released on the label, they’re still making their impact felt throughout the genre with a brand new EP from key players within the wider global market. Puerto Rican based Custom Soldierz jump on board alongside Italian production maestro Akrom for a double-sided output which begins the New Year for Kosen in an explosive fashion. The throttle has been pushed to the floor and as a result, a collection of artists are about to reinstate Kosen’s reputation, providing yet more must-have cuts for music lovers.

The ‘Empathy EP’ drops you straight into the production styles of both Custom Soldierz and Akrom, who dominate with their slick, carefully fashioned musical offerings whilst epitomising the standard held by Kosen’s back catalogue. First track ‘Empathy’ draws out on stepped out percussion, a meandering bassline and a beginning which leaves a foreboding taste on the synapses. Bit by bit you’re pulled into the mix, before you’re able to fully see the intricacies of the collaboration and how it came together so easily. It’s a title-track which packs a punch, leaving you waiting for more as the record finally wraps up.

And finally comes ‘Shifter’, which ducks and dives between slews of synth and padded bass notes. You’re drawn into an almighty breakdown, taking its time before you’re then shot down a chasm of flipping beats and punching drums. The track’s well-chiselled hook instantly grabs you, sweeping its way between every segment. This is Custom Soldierz and Akrom at their most versatile, helping to develop the sound of Kosen alongside their own. It’s looking to be another monumental year for Kosen and on first listen to this EP, they clearly feel the same way.

The ‘Warpath’ LP from Maztek set a precedent and not just for him as an artist. It proved that independent figures can break out on their own and in doing so, can deliver cutting edge music through their own platform, garnering just as much support from the entire drum & bass as they would have done on a more mainstay imprint. And the ‘Warpath’ LP was also significant because of the fact that it was used to launch Maztek’s 0101 Records platform, which has since gone on to host many artists who are acting as pillars of the wider scene, bringing fresh sounds to the table and delivering the upfront music which has come under Maztek’s radar.
It’s these same artists who are about to take the ‘Warpath’ LP into another dimension, drawing from its original track list and offering their own versions of Maztek’s production. From the hectic world of Merikan, who draws for his signature through his rework of ‘The Dirt’, through the take on Maztek’s ‘Come Closer’ by Insomniax, there’s a range of producers who are brought into the fray to present the album from their own worlds. Trio Inward, Hanzo and Randie get their hands on collaboration ‘Gladiators’ featuring Gridlok, whilst ‘Pandemonium’ is given the VIP treatment by Maztek. Disprove follows in quick succession with his twist on the title-track alongside Ben Verse. Korsakov stalwart Droptek draws ‘It’s On’ with Virus Syndicate into his own sonic landscape and historic drum & bass figure Optiv introduces listeners to his reimagining of ‘What You Got’. MC Mota’s vocals are taken into a new frame by Synth Ethics with ‘The Breaker’ and Kiril then has his turn on Maztek & Aeph’s ‘Trajectory’. Up next, relative newcomer Phonetick gives a more lumbering motion to ‘Electronic Warfare’, keeping the same chaotic bass riffs as the original with Redpill and Maztek’s expert manufacturing.
For one final time on 0101 Records, Signs remixes ‘Cheeky Dub’ and highlights why they were such a formidable force before their split. Then RedPill makes another appearance although this time through his own rendition of ‘Shake the Foundation’. Then before the appearance of Insomniax, Current Value delivers his manic patches of synthesis across ‘Timeless’.
As the remix album closes, it signifies just how far Maztek has come as a producer. From his beginnings on some of the most pivotal labels, through to setting up his own, he’s made his mark. With the team he now has at his fingertips, he proves this is something which will continue years from the creation of 0101

When looking at Mizo as an artist and what he’s achieved over the start of his career, it’ll come as no shock that he’s a Russian producer. It seems that Russia has become a microcosm of the drum & bass genre and everything it represents; even from the countries furthest reaches, it’s delivered astounding talent, the type of which has been comparable to figures who’ve spent decades in the game. Mizo’s own output has only followed this trend.

With music on the likes of Eatbrain, Blackout, Dutty Audio and Kosen, he’s never once allowed himself to drop his impeccable production grades. His upcoming EP on Cause4Concern still doesn’t break these rules. 
Although this time, Mizo has again entered the world of Cause4Concern, a label who recently celebrated twenty years in the game and an imprint who’ve proven over the entirety of their lifespan that they’re able to keep up with the current musical climate. Mizo’s forthcoming ‘Black Mirror’ EP is a tribute to this – from ‘Animate’ through to ‘Gravity Fall’, it’s easy to see how Mizo came under the fearsome stretch of C4C.

‘Animate’ begins ‘Black Mirror’ with crackling bass switches and grooves which give the track its momentum as it gradually breaks down. ‘Shaman’ pulls you against its twisting synthesis and tribal-like atmospherics, which create a deeper soundscape to become emerged in. ‘The Pursuit’ features Trilo and as part of the collaboration both artists add their take on a merging of the subgenre’s murkier realms and a more dancefloor influenced edge. ‘Black Mirror’ is the EP’s title-track and it focuses heavily on its slamming drums, centralising the cut with each weighty drum pad. Then ‘Gravity Fall’ is the finishing number, rolling through with sweeping peaks and deep troughs of bass. It provides an exploration of Mizo’s capabilities, showcasing his ingenious strokes of production. Already boasting support from artists such as Noisia, Black Sun Empire, State of Mind, Rene LaVice and Ed Rush, Mizo is a force to be reckoned with. Returning to Cause4Concern, their vast audience is once again about to become enthralled in the music of Mizo.

Amidst a vast lattice of cable & wire, a sole individual worked with inhuman fervour at his craft, bearing forth a constant flow of invention unto the dismal depths of his laboratory. He had sequestered himself here in this catacomb of creation with single-minded purpose, devoted entirely to a code of his own as he endeavoured towards all that had not been done before. Without thought for life or limb he set himself frantically to his craft. Before him, every vial was an opportunity, every electrical surge a moment of bliss, and every elemental synthesis a pathway forwards into the unknown.

For weeks, months, and even years the individual worked at a feverish pace, a hermit within an ever growing den of discarded reagents and the husks of former inventions repurposed for a greater cause. For all of his creations, such time alone had begun to take its toll upon the man, and as it marched on new thoughts came to his mind. “Escape....” came first, “I must show them the way” then came second, bearing upon him with an inescapable force. With his frenzy now turned outwards the inventor burst forth from the doors of his laboratory, clutching a variety of inventions in his grasp. Bathed in the light of the world beyond, the inventor sprinted into the street, shouting of his miracles as his SANITY TRIP drove his feet.

It had long been said that the oceans were the last great frontier, that their depths held a wealth of secrets to be found and discoveries to be made. Foremost of all spoken of were the treasures that lay upon the ocean floor, relics of lost ages left by those who had fallen victim to the sea’s tempestuous ferocity held now within the stygian depths of its enormous body. There, far beneath the realm of humanity in places where even light dare not penetrate, such hoards lay open for the taking to those enterprising enough to delve the darkness. So went the fisherman’s tales and shipwrights stories, and indeed they held some truth. Yet unbeknownst to their tellers these tales were unfinished, for they lacked themselves the knowledge of what truly lay below.

Indeed, amongst the glimmering treasures of these unfathomable depths was something that shone even brighter, a glowing jewel of a luster and size unmatched by any other in the sea. Its presence was known only amongst the most wizened of mariners, whispered of only in hushed tones by their salt-scarred lips. It was said only to be seen on moonless nights adrift far from land, but it’s sight was feared by all who knew of it. Those who saw it were said to be overcome with greed, diving from their vessels in the pursuit of such a wondrous treasure never to be seen again. So ended the tales, for that was all they did know, yet far beneath the waves there was still more to show. Woe to the sailor who so dove to that fate, who knew not the horror that they would soon face. As they arrived at their treasure their pleasure became fear, for revealed was the presence of what truly lay here. A monstrous maw with razor sharp fangs and the face of a behemoth from which their treasure did hang. Trapped now in the darkness down so far below, the last light they saw was that beast’s POWER GLOW.

EATBRAIN mainstays AGRESSOR BUNX illuminate a set of four new tracks with their POWER GLOW EP, which follows their last EP Acid Mirage and recent singles on both Blackout and Bad Taste in continuing the duo’s high volume output of hard edged neurofunk. NAIS returns to NEUROPUNK RECORDS with his LET’S ROCK EP, the latest in an explosive series of releases across the neurofunk scene’s top labels including Eatbrain, Bad Taste, and a prior release on NEUROPUNK RECORDS with his EP “Dirty Bounce”. A diverse display of NAIS’ boisterous sonic character, the LET’S ROCK EP sees NAIS continue to build his meteoric momentum with a further four uncompromising tracks.

LET’S ROCK opens with a track by the same name, within which NAIS warps a funk fueled introductory instrumental with an uproarious bassline that allows space for the samples swung snares to step underneath. VISIBLE TRIGGERS takes a similar approach to its bassline synthesis, but instead stretches it amidst a rapid percussive sequence of ringing metallic timbre. The initial dubby atmosphere of JNGL follows next, taking the source material of the genre as the inspiration for a uniquely technical set of sounds. The braggadocious bravado of BOSSIN then closes the EP, perhaps most emblematic of NAIS boisterous sound in it’s hyperenergetic & funky bassline flow.
