Every clique needs a secret weapon.

Scottish label LuckyMe might officially be a big deal these days, with Cashmere Cat and Baaeur infiltrating pop music, Hudson Mohawke going from bedroom Just Blaze disciple to one of Kanye's right hand men, and Lunice and Eclair Fifi becoming two of electronic music's favourite live acts and DJs, respectively, but S-Type is as good as anyone on the roster.

After a couple of under-the-radar records (the first released on his older brother Tommy's label in 2005), S-Type made his first real impact with Billboard, a six-track EP of widescreen hip-hop beats, oversexed funk and, in 'You Da Best', a closer that's about as sweet as instrumental hip-hop gets when it's 150bpm with a hundred snares a minute.

Two more records on LuckyMe followed: Rosario combined more undeniable melodies with guest spots from Roc Marciano, YC the Cynic and Rustie, while SV8 saw him team up with Lunice, Inkke and Yung Gud for no frills club music. S-Type's biggest collaboration, however, came with Hud Mo on The Rap Monument, a 36-minute rap song featuring Young Thug, Pusha T, Raekwon and a whole lot more. It took the idea of a posse cut to whole new levels, proved that branded content doesn't need to suck and was generally pretty damn impressive.

We've been badgering S-Type for a mix for a good couple of years now, and it's pure coincidence that it's ended up number 500 - but it also feels kinda fitting. There's few people working at his level, but S-Type doesn't always get the props he deserves - the sort of artist we've tried to champion since the start.

Meet Nangdo. The modern day prodigal son of juke, back with the thickest slice of booty smackers you ever did hear. Taking cues from the pioneers; get one part DJ Funk, one part DJ Assault, add a touch of DJ Deeon then smother that signature Nangdo flavour dripping all over the top. This is for the true lovers of juke/booty house. Frenetic synths swirl around the rock-solid footwork framework while the manic cutup rap vocals bring the ghetto flavour over thick rolling sub bass. This release isn’t for the faint-hearted (or the faint-bootied for that matter). This is for the realest, coldest motherfuckers out there. One thing is for sure, this release aint melting, even if Nangdo did bring the heat.

The past year has seen Swiss producer Lemonick rise from relative obscurity to the fore of the club music world, releasing efforts on Nervous Horizons, Clubwerks and Car Crash Set, all while cultivating a bare bones, hybrid style that’s almost immediately recognizable. “Locked Groove” represents his arrival in the Symbols Download Series, a track that balances the rambunctious feeling of East Coast club forms with a serious, spaced out sense of sound design, all topped off with enough lick-driven funk flair to keep you moving throughout.

Night Slugs has always been a label that looks to the past and future simultaneously, and the latest offering from co-honcho L-Vis 1990 harks back to the ’90s with its neon, low-slung synths and a syrupy vocal from newcomer Brook Baili. It’s taken from TOKiMONSTA’s ‘Young Art Sound II’ compilation – the follow-up to 2017’s ‘Young Art Sound’, giving a platform to rising talent from a number of different genres. “L-Vis 1990 has always been one of my favourite producers,” TOKiMONSTA says. “His music is an impressive balance of forward thinking and nostalgia. This original for our compilation is an amazing example of just that – a futuristic classic.” “‘Caught Up’ is from a series of ’90s-inspired love jamz I’ve been working on with a host of exciting new London voices,” L-Vis says of the track. “This project is all about bridging the gap between generations; putting new voices on instrumentals with that old school flavour. Brook is a massive talent, her voice is like candy and her songwriting is amazing. I’m really happy Toki choose this song for the compilation; it’s great to see her supporting a wide range of artists from different scenes.”
