City & i.o - Unkind (feat. Dis Fig)

City & i.o are immensely proud to present Chaos is God Neighbour, the full-length follow-up to their 2019 record Spirit Volume. This new release finds the musicians digging into murkier depths than Spirit Volume, and features extensive contributions from collaborators Dis Fig, aka Felicia Chen, x/o, aka Veron Xio, and vvilms, aka Aaron Wharton.

Composed at a frenetic pace over several weeks in mid-2020, the claustrophobia is palpable. As the album progresses the tracks get both shorter and progressively more brutal, interrupted by brief moments of respite. Throat-shredding harsh vocals provide a high watermark in intensity, while the expansive performances of Dis Fig and x/o serve as vantage points over the morass, giving the listener something both beautiful and human to grasp. Careening from rich synth work, to distorted guitars in alternate tunings; from i.o’s virtuosic and unhinged drumming to slabs of harsh ambient noise, this is a genuinely ambitious and rewarding album.

"Highly regarded around these ways for introducing the likes of Ronce on his Dawn Records label - with whom he collaborated on the ‘Aquatics’ LP - and a string of ace compilation cuts, visual artist-turned-producer Hajj renders his most ephemeral yet affective conception of a negative ecstasy in ‘Drag Me Into the Void’. The three tracks reprise the billowing introspection of his 2020 debut for Brothers From Different Mothers , ‘Dédicace À Personne’ with a subtly refined palette and sound design, dematerialising traces elements of late ‘90s trance and up-to-the-second trap into thee gauziest, gently buoyant ambient space.

The trio of tax slot neatly into YOUTH's cross section of contemporary bedroom/living room/imaginary club space with a breezy mutability. ‘Drag Me Into the Void’ appears in subtly alternate mixes, bathing a trance siren vocal refrain in anaesthetising reverb and vapourized traces of emo-rap drums with a sublime sense of deferred gratification on the original, while nipping/tucking to more elusive allure in the ‘Euphoria’s death edit’. In the middle ‘Reverse Catharsis’ augments the syrupy ambient rap aesthetic with more pronounced woodblock percussion hinting at Burial hitting the downstroke, and lit up with killer, trancey hyper-blooz synth plucks. "

Fountain of Meaning is a new sonic fiction from sound artist J.G. Biberkopf following last year’s Ecologies II: Ecosystems of Excess released on Knives. Emerging out of a situation of overflow, the record burrows deeper into his practice of palpable audio theater with a study of object and relations across space-time specific sounds.

The Fountain as a theme reflects a spouting and spilling of information, an erotic gushing of imagined aural history. “The Fountain was the source of water in the public space in cities,” J.G. Biberkopf explains. “Now it’s pretty much a sexualised architectural gesture of both beautification and the spectacle of dominant ideologies.”

The western classical musical canon, much like the perpetual coming of the fountain, flush the headphone space with stimuli. Reflex and memory guides the listener through a semiotic architecture of processed recordings of masses in Catholic churches and contemporary performances of pre-medieval music. A liquidity of structure has an anxious influence and is a closed system approach to form and imagination. When water flows, it fills every space, then spills over to claim more. History is equally abundant and alive. We have never had as much history as we have now. We have never been able to see ourselves as we can now.

A knowledge of a grander architecture of knowing and recalling oppress the ecologies of human decision-making.The nature of the archive has transformed into a total and panoptic intelligence. A life is a gamble as the inventory of the world overflows into the production of a spectral third, an other, a confrontation. Fountain of Meaning offers a dynamic tension and release. A molecular tragedy, our abject recovery into a collaborative reimagining of a trauma long forgotten.

GIL’s latest record Infolding is released by Danse Noire, his second release on the label since Orchids and Wasps. Aptly named, it traces an inward fold, both of the artist's leanings and the listener's experience. The record is reflective, probing, and supple; its arrangements a development of the musical language explored in his previous release.

Infolding engages both with composition and non-determinism, its playfulness skipping across dramatic deluge and expansive gestures to gently paced segments, a game of hide and seek. GIL displays once again his interest in movement as well as an understanding of the fine aspects which determine familiarity and structure; time as rhythm, embodiment as genre, precognition and expectation – the agents of notional listening get questioned gently and persistently. The result is music which will joyfully betray an ear's expectation, replacing it with a twist or sudden space. The record dances on an unstable surface, dipping where it should rise, halting where it could pound, uttering affecting melodies, gracefully yet laboriously; GIL's is an introspective, churning, bone rattling palette.

Hardly ever offering a moment of rest, he creates environments in which something is perpetually pulling, stretching, towards-tending. Laden with cartwheeling themes and hooks which appear and disappear in different shades, the record houses overarching motifs which appear and scatter over the span of several tracks. This dizzying distribution makes for an in-folded listening, in which the artist considers the record's body as outside of single frameworks, its premises and planting delayed or waylaid by new, unexpected considerations.

The distinct sense of motion in the record is the artist making use of his experience as a live musician, and is further developed due to his aphantasiac condition. An inability to visualize both imagery and sound in his mind spurs GIL into sensing arrangements by physical preemption and resonance, reactively. Unsurprisingly then, Infolding takes shape as a blindfolded, visceral dance.

Undivided, unified, the overwhelming sense of oneness. Feeling and experiencing this was her strongest desire since the departure, a deep longing. Walking back to base, she knew this had been obtained, it was clear and ran through her like water. Though she did not feel complete, she did not feel intergrated or a part of the whole, as it were. The collective 'one' disected, distributed and proliferated without her. Did she feel spaciousness or emptiness?

The next release on Lyon-based label BFDM is a raw palette of sonics created by Dawn head honcho and visual artist, Hajj. Opening track 'My Love Is Rotten To The Core' floats in and thunders out; delicate piano and textural delays drift upon cavernous low end.
