Hello. I’ll pass on the genre classification since I often find it to be ridiculously restrictive and needlessly uninformative; although some seem to find it imperative for whatever reason. These are songs which I hoped to represent a variety of the musical feels I’ve enjoyed all my life and colorize the whole. With conviction I will say that I just like to make songs. Without it, I’ll admit that I’m still trying to find a comfort or power place musically and learn the technical end of all this which I would gladly have had anyone else handle if they truly had the interest, skill and heart for it.
These are basically profiles. Some are more specific and some more metaphoric. Some we all know, past or present, everywhere or right in front of us. Some of these songs are old enough that I can’t honestly remember the direct inspirations, but I can reacquaint myself with the characters in the present anyway.
The loss of my sister (vocalist, drummer and percussionist) to the damn cancer before getting (taking) the time to re-record under more optimal conditions was a major bump in the road to say the least. This left me to use older recordings from a previous demo as re-recording with another vocalist was not an option. Soliciting drummers for the project became too troublesome for my patience. I chose to re-create my sister’s drum parts using MIDI where applicable (Kiss the Bride uses the original rough recordings of her set in a small living room since the unpolished sound seemed to go with the chaos of the song anyway) and filled in the rest myself. I never claimed to be a drummer and the lack of one here will always be a glaring deficit to me, but I’m eager to become better at this in the future.
Vocalists and guitarists were no easier for me it seems. Distractions, drama and the it’s-not-my-project-and-I’ve-been-there-and-done-that” mindset were  hurdles. There was also the difficulty of moving people toward the frontier of music-making rather than performing. (Creating songs is beyond karaoke night.)Perhaps the greatest obstacle was the simple inability to see that we need to do these things because we can and that is why we are here. All this forced me to rely on my pipes, fingers and the magic of technology a little more than I had hoped to do. Adding my niece (same sister’s daughter) to the vocal mix was fun though.
A creator can listen, think, sneer, tweak here and tweak there forever. Nothing ever feels “done” until you resolve to the fact that it is time to move on to other things. At that point you simply deem it “done” and try not to look back (too often). “It can all be done or done better tomorrow and never now” is a philosophy for ultimate inaction.
Thank you for listening and I hope you can find something positive in any of the songs as songs. My apologies for any unavoidable amateurishness. I have learned much, especially that there is sooooooo much I need to learn technically, musically and otherwise. I promise to do that moving forward and enjoy the process.
