Inspired by the iconic tradition of the sample pack, the Source Folder series seeks to explore the diversity of interpretations, paths and offsprings that might emerge from a common resource. In each installment, a member of the Global URL Nation provides a sample pack from which other artists are invited to create a new track.

For this second edition, we welcome long-time collaborator Bademjan - a French artist blending heavily processed instruments with arcane atmospheres and raw emotions to unveil the sublime in their delicate intricacies.

For the project, he drew inspiration from early video game music, challenging 14 artists to collaboratively imagine the soundtrack of an ethereal, otherworldly video game. At the heart of the project is a collection of 25 custom-designed instruments – a unified palette of ambient washes, celestial leads, and weathered textures – that served as the exclusive sound source for the tracks, reminiscent of the creative limitations of the 16-bit era.

The result is a compilation of 14 tracks by aeria, B E N N, commun des mortels, False Self, Guenter Råler, Indigoblue, jjjacob, Léo Dubois, Levier, Lukann, Peow Beow, Sçlé, Sioban and Sopoorific.

Each track feels like a gateway to its own unique realm, a portal to its own liminal space, where wistful melodies and haunting textures intertwine. While some tracks evoke a tender nostalgia, wrapping the listener in bitcrushed warmth, others explore darker, more mysterious tones – all coming together beautifully as an immersive journey through uncharted dreamscapes.

This is an emotional Odyssey, traversing the vast landscapes of Ambient and Trance. The foreground narrates the fragmentation of human language and communication—chaos, diversity, experimentation, and the surrealism of concepts. Abstract narrative elements weave through, blurring the boundaries of meaning.

The epilogue is an (eternal) whisper of tenderness—spoken and unspoken vows stretching fleeting emotions into looping echoes, only to dissipate into the cracks of time. Melodies and hypnotic voices rise and fall like distant memories, endlessly reverberating in the void.

May it serve as a fleeting sanctuary for night wanderers and lost souls—a moment of peace for hearts adrift in the torrents of time.

Following a number of key contributions to Eastern Nurseries compilations, Romance Relic returns to the fold with their latest EP, “Hundred Petals of Suffocation”.

Expanding on minute moments of daily life, Romance Relic’s delicate layering of field recordings, melancholic clarinet passages and vlog samples is interspersed with juxtaposing bursts of SFX across the EP’s 6 tracks. Capturing beauty in the mundane, “Hundred Petals of Suffocation” seeks to emphasise the allure of imperfection, gesturing toward a corporeality of the sonic palette.

Respecting the limitations of one’s own body sits at the core of Jussi’s compositional ethos, where value is placed on striking a balance between the intended and the possible, culminating in a tender and deeply affecting sensibility.
