Spectre Folk - Mothership

Francisco Franco are a trio originating in Philadelphia, playing instrumental music for two guitars, bass, and electronic rhythm tracks. The group started as a duo of Rob Francisco (who plays solo industrial noise as M Ax Noi Mach) and Matt Franco (from Allentown noise group Air Conditioning), who wanted a creative outlet for more melodic, less abrasive musical modes. After recording some demos, they added Nate Davis (who also plays as Unchained) on bass, and began composing songs of simple guitar lines intertwining over the bass’s harmonic foundation. Influences such as the first Microdisney LP, The Durutti Column, and 70s library records may be heard, but crowds at recent shows have made comparisons as diverse as Neu! and Dick Dale. This is new wave elevator music: melodic, minimal, and extremely listenable. Two cassettes of demos have been released by Silvox Recordings, and their debut LP is out November 12th on Matt Mondanile’s New Images Limited label.

         Impasse is a sideways journey into the archives of London based artist Luke Younger, aka Helm. Originally conceived six years ago in the wake of a Birds of Delay tour, an edited version of Impasse saw the light of day as a mini cdr on the Low Point label in 2008. This expanded re-issue has the two original tracks remastered along with two other pieces from the same sessions that remained unmixed and unreleased until a couple of years ago. Impasse is somewhat of an anomaly in the Helm canon when put alongside recent live performances and his work for labels like PAN and Kye. Where these explore the mystery inherent in obscure / everyday sounds, acoustic phenomena and mutated rhythm that results in an unusual urban experience, Impasse is significantly brighter in tone. Consisting of 4 loop based pieces the record moves into more fantastic worlds as electronics rise to the occasion, evoking similar atmospheres found in the work of Terry Riley and Boyd Rice’s early ambient works. Picture a functional family vacation, an explorer at the apex of his endeavours, a 4am drinking session with new liquids discovered. Bright corners, euphoric angles and ecstatic drones all appear in an emotionally charged high that reflects these unique moments in the human experience. The beauty of Helm lies in its implacable curiosity, the way his music observes the state of current being without sliding into the pitfalls of the general milieu. Valley Girl was inspired by the agriculture and landscapes of Oakland, California and its  horizon of rolling hills. The peaks and valleys of the album's landscape are made of fifteen computer generated tones that cycle through melodies driven by ambisonic surround-sound locations to define space.

Computer tones were treated with phase-modulation of triangle waveforms to control the duty cycle of the sine tone. This created a prickly crispness and coiled release that enabled frequency registers to shift back and forth with various levels of control. I used my voice and vocal harmonizer with a midi arpeggiator to make a gated succession of notes in a more controlled frequency range.

The computer material was recorded live with little editing besides the addition of silence to accentuate vocals as a separate entity. The voice was then placed in the silences - or valleys - between melodies. The vocals were recorded live to tape from a parallel practice of recording processed voice improvisations with electronics.

Valley Girl evolves from the synthetic sounds I have been generating on computers for the past several years. When I perform live it typically involves computer synthesis. With the addition of processed voice in the silent spaces of the album five pieces, I have in a way marked the topography of Valley Girl with human traces.    - Madalyn Merkey, 2014

Kayla Cohen, a.k.a. Itasca, is a folk guitarist and songwriter from New York State. She has released several small press CD-rs and cassettes over the past five years, and began recording as Itasca after a move to Los Angeles in 2012. She records at home, taking inspiration from the fringes of LA's open space and natural land.

On Itasca’s latest full-length, Unmoored By The Wind, Kayla Cohen achieves new levels of clarity and expansiveness. Where 2012’s Grace Riders on the Road reveled in homemade intimacy, Unmoored By The Wind  opens to the world, reaching a timeless, near-baroque yearning; each of these eleven tracks burns with a unique vision. At once soft-spoken and virtuosic, Cohen’s fingerpicking mesmerizes, laying gauzy groundwork for vocal work David Keenan rightfully cited as “courtly…dazzling.” It’s a spacious set of songs, one you can wander into, flowing seamlessly between wistful interludes a la Bob Desper and fully-fledged verses of powerful, often beguiling imagery. “Two male shapes are standing/ Shrouded in white cloth” sings Cohen on “Nature’s Gift,” with a plaintive candidness that echoes Sibylle Baier. “They’re looking at me/ Sort of smiling/ Seems as if I’ve called them here.” Cohen’s voice has a windburnt quality reminiscent of Lal Waterson or Collie Ryan, but it’s tempered with sweetness, and on songs like “Colt In Hiding” she realizes an angelic luster. More than ever before, though, Cohen’s confident singing is laid bare; vocals ride on top of arrangements, taking their rightful place in the forefront. The effect is arresting. Cohen has achieved new levels of clarity, while staying true to the seductive ghostliness that has come to characterize her sound.

Itasca - After Dawn

Terror & Healing is a string of mind adventures, ten miniatures of possibilities, a bunch of invisible cities and imaginary beings. It’s a contribution to the exploring and unmapping of reality through imaginative research, making the ears like the fingers of the blind, piecing the multitude back into music.

Terror & Healing is Tsembla’s fourth release after the 2013 LP Nouskaa henget (New Images), Fauna (Ikuisuus, 2011) and Tuplafiesta 7” (Vauva, 2009). Tsembla, aka Marja Johansson, is a Swedish-Finnish artist operating out of Turku, Finland. She’s an active worker in the musical activities of her hometown and a member of the Kemialliset Ystävät ensemble. Arranging sounds from manipulated samples, electronics and objects, Tsembla’s music is rich in detail, riding on waves of warped melodies, fluttering rhythms, abstract voices and mutating textures.

New Jersey / New York based project Limited plays a brand of dream pop that's heavy on the pop, albeit a highly mechanical version of it. It's a sound built on contrast: a juxtaposition of the mechanized, danceable grooves of the New Romantics and walls of noise-gaze guitar layers. On this debut single, Limited is NJ-native Alex Craig, who has also done time in Slumberland Records indie-pop act Big Troubles as well as the live incarnation of Ducktails, but has since expanded to a band which includes Ariel Zambenedetti and Eric Shaw. This "double A-sided" single, released on Matthew Mondanile's (Ducktails, Real Estate) New Images imprint, features "You Must Be Dreaming" b/w "New Day Rising": two pop anthems which shroud sequenced rhythms and bubblegum choruses in a thick sheet of warm static that runs through the whole thing. The "Hi-NRG" arrangements inject some welcome liveliness into an otherwise often sleepy genre. Meanwhile, the filter of static abstraction forces the listener to dig just a little deeper for the hooks, making them all the more rewarding.

   Vancouver's The Shilohs have in short order positioned themselves as a quintessential band's band. These four guys have the songwriting talent, chops and the oddball cool to make any gig memorable. Like the late greats before them a la Big Star, The Replacements, and even Crazy Horse, they have the chameleon-like ability to meld into a scene - Their songs, which continue the cannon of classic west coast rock by weaving together an infinite number of influences, take on a life of their own before an audience as their performances become more about the communal energy transforming typical fan - band dynamics.

This futuristic tale of a Zero Gravity Sports network's soundtrack being transmitted from the Olympic Space Station via Satellite feed, revealing an intuitive feel for the grace and immensity of space when brought into conjuction with the next advent in Transglobal Sports News Interstitial music. Five pieces of high energy portal from the difficult listening and metallic abstraction of "2042 Zero G Olypmics" to the Global Space Station Club Hit "JAI-LAi Nightclub." A modern soundtrack to a film such as Carl Sagan's "Cosmos," ESN combines the the tele-prompt madness of current Global Sports Network with that of the blissful repetitions of ‘70s Minimalism. Tsembla - Nouskaa Henget LP

Tsembla is the musical work of Marja Johansson, a Swedish-Finnish
artist operating out of Turku, Finland. Utilizing a wide range of
instruments, electronics, objects and manipulated samples, the music
of Tsembla rides on waves of warped melodies, fluttering rhythms,
abstract voices and mutating textures, crossbreeding the known and the
imaginary.

Nouskaa henget (Spirits, rise!) is her third release, after the 7”
Tuplafiesta, released by Jan Anderzén’s Vauva label in 2009 and the LP
Fauna on the Finnish Ikuisuus label in 2011. Loosely assembled, rough
edged compositions, rich in details, come together into odd
instrumental miniatures in an almost-pop format, venturing into fourth
world territory from a clattering, wheezing and boiling DIY kitchen
inspired by Moondog, Ruth White, Raymond Roussel, LAFMS, Jon Hassell,
Anton Bruhin, René Daumal, Suzanne Ciani and folk musics of the Andes
and Asia. Two of the tracks on the album are made in collaboration
with flute wizard Antti Tolvi (of Rauhan Orkesteri, Lauhkeat Lampaat
etc.) layering up Tolvi’s overdubbed flutes with hand percussion, tape
snippets and electronics.
