Working through “the mail”, from Brooklyn to Johannesburg, Jason Friedman (The Hundred In The Hands | New Ancestors) & South African painter Zander Blom conspire to create six agitated heady tracks of dazed and dense electronic music.

Oscillating between heaving pianos and bells pooling in the playground sweat of “Shot Down Survived”, the stretched out dark minimalism of “Workja” and the obliterated anxiety-driven waves of heavy static in “Formless Fear” Grey Eyes Glazed is a cinematic fever-dream of schizoid rhythms, sun-baked reverbs and stretched tapes draped in loose-headed wooziness.

Multi-disciplinary artist Ari Russo bends the visual detritus of our immediate past and DIY lines of code into sneakily gorgeous instrumentals and eerily disaffected videos.

His latest single/video Pressure Palace—released through art-collective New Ancestors—adds skittering electric guitars and chiming harmonics to the outstanding synth-led workouts of the Wild Metals EP (Valcrond Video, 2014). It’s an altogether more human realization couched in static and tightly propulsive.

The Hundred In The Hands return with their third album Love In The Black Stack; a swoony late-night soundtrack to the catastrophic present. 

Eleanore Everdell and Jason Friedman began working on these intimate new songs and ambient tracks using cassettes recorded in the late ‘90’s, demos, voice-memos, field recordings and other half-forgotten ephemera collected over the years. They then went back into the studio with producers Vito Roccoforte and Gabriel Andruzzi (The Rapture, Vito and Druzzi) -- who both add their indelible stylistic synth and percussion work -- and together helped re-work the material for an album conceived as the score to a larger art installation/performance piece. 

The final 11 songs yo-yo from the insular romance of “I Follow”, “Pale Moon Out” and “Felt A Love” to the jagged pulse of “Proof of Love”, “Red Eyes Rising” and cascading drive of “Wade Up”; alternately grounded in the deep searching harmonies of Eleanore’s layered vocals and the purposeful silences and slipped rhythms of the off-kilter production. 

With lyrical through-lines moving from satellites and constellations “high above the earth,” through “telephones ringing in empty rooms” and unwinding under rising tides — and with themes loosely touching on gentrification, environmental collapse, and occult technological faiths — Love in the Black Stack is an attempt to find the gaps still ungoverned by these global forces and to create sense and connection from incomprehension and dislocation.

The Hundred in the Hands release a video for “Pale Moon Out”, off their third album Love in the Black Stack featuring singer Eleanore Everdell and directed by her partner Jason Friedman.

The second part of a larger video work, “Pale Moon Out” is a swoony late-night soundtrack to longing and regret set against a neoliberal karaoke fantasia of luxury property developments. 

The track is produced by Ex-Rapture members Vito Roccoforte and Gabriel Andruzzi (Vito&Druzzi) with additional production from Jason Friedman.

THITH signed to Warp Records in 2010 releasing multiple LP’s and EP’s. This is the first release since 2012’s Red Night and the first for their label New Ancestors: a journal/label focusing on artist-to-artist relationships and patient journalism examining, supporting and challenging vital culture.
