I wrote this song after a brief conversation with a friend about the negativity in the world today.  This is my attempt to bring something positive into your day.

Fly Today

A song I wrote after I was received a message in Facebook Messenger.  Someone thought I was someone else and was super lonely and reached out.  They were a stranger in pain who I took the time to help, no scam involved.  I like to think I made their day a little brighter.

Ride was written about the constant changes and pivots we have to deal with in life.

Darker Days was written as a song of encouragement for someone close to me who has struggled with their mental health as we all do from time to time.

Newfoundland where I am from has many incredible songwriters.  This song is about one of the very best who we lost in recent years.  The lyrics were written as a collaboration between my brother Wade Pinhorn and I.

The Bard Of Newfoundland

I believe a in high power, I have had witness of it in my life.  This song is an attempt to convey that power.  I also challenged myself to use an extended rhyming scheme in each verse.

During the pandemic I did an online songwriting class with my High School students.  They asked me to also write a song and this came out of those dark times.  It reminds me of how dark it really was.

Going Down

This song song is not about being "in love" but more about the idea that no matter how far and wide we search, in the end love is at the very center of the universe.  Beautiful fretless playing by my brother Wade Pinhorn

In Love

I wrote this song about my daughter many years ago, but on the occasion of my niece's wedding I was asked to sing it during her Father/Daughter dance with my brother Paul Pinhorn, so I decided to rerecord it at that time.  Backup vocals are by my daughter Kat Pinhorn.  My brother Wade Pinhorn reworked the piano harmonies and they are just beautiful.

I wrote this song in honour of my Mom and Dad's 50th Wedding Anniversary.  They have not been married over 60 years, an amazing feat in these times.

The Boulevard Of Broken Dreams

I wrote this poem when I was a very young man, and I always intended to make it into a song.  It was inspired by Propero's speech in The Tempest Shakespeare and discussions we had in a very toxic but informative English course in uni.

All Will Pass

Every now and then I challenge myself to write a 'happy' song and this was the result one such challenge.  It is meant to be encouraging and uplifting.

Smile

This was a poem I wrote when I fell instantly and suddenly head over heels in love with my life partner Laura.  Many years later I got around to making it into a song, I don't write with electric guitar very often but I like how this turned out.  This song expresses how love can lift you out of darkness as it did for me.

Just You And I

I wrote this on the ferry leaving my home of Newfoundland after a long holiday.  After many many trips back and forth from here to there, it occurred to me how life is just a series of circles.  Without goodbyes, there no reunions and hellos.

This is a song I wrote about the innocence of childhood.  I play the the piano, and I programmed the drums.  My brother Wade Pinhorn played guitars, completed the arrangement, and did sound editing. Suffer The Children

This is an ORIGINAL song that has been milling around in my head for a very long time.  It deals with my many wonderings about what this man's life and death must have been like, looking for the man more than the religious figure I guess.  I sent a rough musical sketch off to my extremely talented brother Wade and what came back was a 6/4 Gospel arrangement. I sing the vocals, the choir part and played the drum track, all the rest of the instruments and most of the arrangement are Wade's. It's been a lot of fun putting this one together, we hope you enjoy it!

Different

James Pinhorn is a native of St. John’s, Newfoundland where he appeared frequently on stage and on CBC Radio and Television as a boy soprano and actor.  He moved to Toronto in 1985 and completed a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Toronto.  During a year of Special Studies in Elementary Education and Choral Conducting at the University, James served as the Assistant Conductor of the Concert Choir conducted by Doctor Doreen Rao.  During that year he was invited by Dr. Rao to conduct the choir in a performance of Sharon Fragments at a gala concert honouring Canadian composer John Beckwith.  That same year James was invited by Robert Cooper to conduct the back-stage chorus in three performances of Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloe for the National Ballet of Canada.  He served as conductor of the University Chorus at the University of Toronto for two years before accepting the post as conductor of the University Women’s Chorus which he held for 6 years.  James was also a vocal coach for the Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir, and was the guest chorus conductor for Robert Cooper in two performances of the opera Marina for the Opera in Concert Chorus in December of 1996. James has also been invited twice as a presenter for the Ontario Music Educators Association Conference held in Toronto, where he has given presentations on the state of music education in our public schools, on rehearsal techniques for young male singers, and on issues of intellectual copyright. James also had the honour of conducting the Massed Choir for 9 seasons at the Ontario Educational Leadership Centre in the Intermediate Arts Course for Grade Seven students and is currently and Course Administrator there. James Pinhorn is a Secondary music teacher at Agincourt Collegiate Institute in the Toronto District School Board where he teaches both Vocal Music and Computers and Music courses.  The Agincourt Madrigal Singers have won National Gold Awards 6 times, most recently at the 2012 MusicFest Nationals in Toronto, Ontario.  The Agincourt Men’s Chorus recently won the City Of Lincoln prize for Best Male Chorus at the National Kiwanis Festival in British Columbia.  In his spare time James composes songs and records them in his home studio.
