I. Spark
Sometimes we find ourselves caught between staying inside or going outside. Inside, we feel safe and separate from the world; outside, there are many unknowns. Without the risk of venturing outward, we would never know if there’s anything better. This movement opens with a rhythmic dance and folky overtones to express our upcoming adventure.
II. Maneuver
When outside, sounds fill the air - some familiar, some new. Traveling through unknown territory can overburden our senses with the unfamiliar. Sound effects spread through the orchestra with foot stomps and instruments knocks and the rhythm we know so well (from the first movement) is quickly lost among the noise.
III. Crystal Air
One sound we recognize can give us hope and selective hearing can highlight the “safety” of that familiar sound, while the world around us continues it’s noisy symphony. This movement starts on the pitch “F” and ends on the leading tone, “E.” Notes and rhythms change, but we can always find ourselves listening to that familiar pitch. The ending is unnerving, because we do not end with our familiar sound.
IV. Expanse
Our familiar sound is quickly hidden by the noise around us and chord structures begin to form. Without our selective hearing to distract us from our surroundings, the beauty of the world presents itself with its full range of color and sound. Opening our mind and letting go of what we know, can expand our sensory input and increase our comfortability. We cannot escape the world - the outside surrounds our “inside,” our home, our mind. So we must not be afraid of fear. We must always go outside. “Attack life, it going to kill you
anyway” (Stephen Coallier).
